Soc Behav Res Pract Open J. 2020; 5(2): 53-60. doi: 10.17140/SBRPOJ-5-128 ABSTRACT Introduction Empathy in social work is one of the most important factors that can bring change in the patient, by developing a productive relationship. The purpose of this study is to explore empathy in the practice of social work, as it is used by professional s ocial workers. Method Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 12 social workers in public health services in Crete. Responses were recorded, and content analysis was used to analyze the data. Findings There were differences in the way that social workers perceive the concept of empathy, depending on their prior experiences. It was also found that they are more “sensitive” when patients have a common problem with them. Among the difficulties that pre- vented them from being empathetic was having “a difficult personal period” that affected their work.

A cross-sectional primary care study from Greece Despo Ierodiakonou1,2†, Dimitra Sifaki-Pistolla1,3†, Maria Kampouraki4, Ioannis Poulorinakis5, Polyvios Papadokostakis6, Ioannis Gialamas7, Polyxeni Athanasiou2, Vasiliki Bempi2, Irene Lampraki2, Ioanna Tsiligianni1* and On behalf of the Greek UNLOCK group Abstract Background: Comorbidities and adherence to inhaled therapy appears to have a major impact on treatment goals, health status and disease control in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Aim of the study was to assess levels of adherence to inhalers, comorbidities and associations with COPD outcomes in patients residing in rural and semi-urban areas of Greece. Methods: Two hundred fifty-seven COPD patients were enrolled from primary health care in 2015–2016. Physicians used structured interviews and questionnaires to assess quality of life and disease status. Patients were classified into groups according to GOLD 2019 guidelines (based on CAT and mMRC). Adherence to inhalers was measured with the Test of Adherence to Inhalers (TAI). Multivariate linear and logistics regression models were used to assess associations between comorbidities and adherence to inhalers with COPD outcomes, including CAT and mMRC scores, exacerbations and GOLD A-D status. Results: 74.1% of COPD patients reported poor adherence, while most of them were characterized

  • A Survey of the Western Mesara Plain in Crete 195
A SURVEYOF THE WESTERNMESARA PLAIN IN CRETE: PRELIMINARY REPORT OF THE 1984, 1986, AND 1987 FIELD SEASONS (PLATES44-55) ]H[HIS ARTICLE is a preliminary report of the regional archaeological survey project focused on the Western Mesara Plain (the modern eparchies of Pyrgio- tissa and Kainourgio) in southern Crete (Fig. 1; P1.44) during 1984, 1986, and 1987.1 A Greek-American synergasia, the project included archaeologists, geologists, botanists, historians, and ethnographers who each season documented (1) a com- plete history of settlement in the region; (2) the interaction of the local inhabitants with the environment through time; and, ultimately, (3) how these factors affected the establishment and subsequent development of a complex society in the region. Two archaeological teams intensively surveyed 22 square kilometers immediately around Phaistos (Fig. 7). In this paper we discuss the research background and methods of the project; the character and extent of the Western Mesara region; its geology, geomorphology, and changing coastal configuration; the modern veg- etation; the history of settlement from the Neolithic period through the present day; Byzantine through Ottoman historical sources and monuments; and aspects of traditional life in the region. lThis project was supported by grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities (grant #150-2843A), the Institute for Aegean Prehistory, the National Geographic Society (grants 2659-83, 2833-84, 3108/9-85, and 3529/30-87), and generous contributions from Mrs. Mary Chambers and Dr. and Mrs. Harod Conlon. Work took place under a synergasiapermit from the Greek Ministry of Culture to the American School of Classical Studies at Athens in 1984, 1986, and 1987.

Subsequently an inquiry was made about the economic impacts of cultural tourism in the region and the signs, which are reflected by this type of tourism. In order to achieve these objectives, a bibliographic research was carried out and a questionnaire was distributed to three hundred (300) residents from the Municipality of Heraklion. For the summarization, the classification and the presentation of the primary data, the descriptive statistics methods were used. Specifically, in this paper, the percentages corresponding to the respondents’ answers to each question individually through tables and diagrams are presented, resulting in some conclusions. • PREFACE Peter Mackridge
PREFACE PREFACE Peter Mackridge “I much doubt Crete being a picturesque country in any way, or that it will repay much trouble in seeing it. Its antiquities, etc. so old as to be all but invisible; its buildings, monasteries, etc. nil; its Turkish towns fourth-rate. Rats O! and gnats.” (Edward Lear, The Cretan Journal, ed. Rowena Fowler (Dedham: Denise Harvey, 1984), p. 31 (15 April 1864)) 1. Preamble Professional photoportrait of R.M. Dawkins by G. Maragiannis, Herakleion, 19031 R.M. Dawkins first came to Crete during the period of his Craven Scholarship, which was awarded to him by Emmanuel College, Cambridge as a reward for his Double First in the Classical Tripos. Under the terms of the scholarship, he spent the academic year 1902-3 attached to the British School at Athens. During this period, in early 1903, excited by Arthur Evans’ discoveries at Knossos, he sailed to Crete not only to familiarize himself with the recently discovered Minoan finds that were housed in the archaeological museum at Herakleion, but also to take part in one of the excavations. In a letter to Xan Fielding (19 January 1952) he writes that he landed at Suda Bay, from where he rode to Candia (the Venetian name for modern Herakleion)2 1 Photo from the Dawkins archive, University of Oxford. The photographer Maragiannis was employed by Arthur Evans to take photos of Knossos during the excavations there: Ann Brown, Arthur Evans and the Palace of Minos (Oxford: Ashmolean Museum, 2000), p. 11. 2 The name Candia derives from the Arabic khandaq ‘moat’, which the Arab conquerors of Crete used as the name of the town they founded in the 820s as the capital of the Emirate of Crete.
