1066 Chapter Committee Director Skelly’s Report

As you are all aware I have only been your Director for a little Assistant Director & Webmaster: over four months and as I said in the last Chapter Magazine, David Lewis ‗Thank you for being gentle with me in my early days.‘ This Email: Chapter is known as being a very friendly and sociable club and [email protected] although, as you might expect with 300 members, there have been some ‗blips‘, the club still justifies that excellent reputation.

These were billed as ‗Newcomer‘ or ‗New to Group Riding‘ rides but, under- standably, people were keen to get back on their bikes after the Head Road Captain: Richard Beal winter and were keen to take part. However, for someone who Email: [email protected] was new then, this was obviously going to be a little intimidating. Therefore, the decision was made that these rides will now be for ‗Newcomers‘ only and the ‗Road Crew‘. The ‗Kick Off‘ ride again attracted a large number of riders and ended with a great party at a great location in Cooden. (Although Interchapter Rep: Barry Heasman I‘m not sure that the Air Guitar competition was a good idea after a few hours of drinking). It was not the bike that was causing the wob- ble, it was my complete inability to ride the damn thing properly. I have two sons who are both intent on getting bikes when they are old enough and I thank heavens that suitably structured training and a specific attainment of skill is now a mandatory prerequisite.

Now then, Riders Edge, what can I say apart from totally brilliant, challenging, theoretically informative, demonstra- was indeed achievable and laid out accurately. It was becoming evident to us all that our previous lessons, tuition and practice were proving beneficial and potentially reaping huge re- wards. One final observation I would like to convey is that of the incredible camaraderie displayed between all the chapter members who took part. It is extremely rare to experience someone seemingly competing with you having as much, if not more concern and emotion over your failure as they do their own success. This reasonably unique behaviour is a testament to the natural unquestioned friendships we enjoy within the 1066 Chapter and one that certainly makes me very proud of my association.

1066 A ‗Thundering in the Glens! At the end of August, Bealy, Maz, Kelvin and I rode up to Aviemore (Scotland) and went to the Dunedin Chapter‘s legendary rally – Thunder in the Glens. Any good? I hear you ask. Well put it this way, 3 days, 3 nights, 2700 peo- ple, at least 16 bands, a ride out of 1200 bikes through stunning scenery, a superb Sunday night stage show, a blood curdling display of Celtic drumming, fireworks, a campsite with its own breakfast tent and hot showers, ex- cellent organisation, really friendly people, and all for £25 a ticket…yes, it was excellent!!!!

Day One (Thursday) – Crawley to Carronbridge (464 miles) England DRY, Scotland...WET!

05.15 In the Beals‘ spare room, my alarm goes off. I bound effortlessly (ahem...) out of bed, throw on my clothes and head downstairs to cable tie and bungee my new psychedelic bags to Stripy (my V-rod). Day 4 – Sunday During the day, we take a ride to Braemar and Pitlochry, and encounter more wall-to-wall scenery, a coffee shop/ woollen mill, a Sean Connery sound-alike and an excel- lent roast lamb lunch served by young South Africans in kilts. In the evening, along with 1000 other rally goers, we hit the main entertainment area and are treated to a su- perb musical stage show - Route 66, starring the Doctor from Doctor and the Medics!

Days 5 - 9 After the rally, we tour Inverness, Oban (visiting the clan Maz, Bealy, Clare and Kelvin at Loch Lomand Kersley), the Isle of Mull and Loch Lomand. We encounter highland cows, errant sheep, eagles and the odd midge. (for various items including wine, chocolate and carrots… We ride on fast roads, twisty roads, hills and hairpins. Perhaps I should have gone for the long pink flowing dress instead of the simple cream trouser suit. All my friends had preferred the dress so why didn‘t I listen to them?

Too late, because before I could hastily fling the trouser suit off we could hear the throbbing sound of three Harleys turning into our very quiet road. Tessa looked out of the window and did the typical teenage, ―Oh my god! What are those motorbikes doing outside our house?‖

I went outside to say hello to Skelly, Tony Lloyd and John, with his beribboned bike looking great, and then the taxi arrived. Not wanting to keep the Groom waiting we bun- dled in and drove off from Bexhill to Eastbourne followed by the three Harleys. It was a fun drive and I think the taxi driver enjoyed himself too!

Well it was fun until we arrived in Eastbourne and eldest son called Tessa‘s mobile to ask us to go round the block because Roger wasn‘t there yet. I had given him strict in- structions to leave early enough in order to find a parking space outside the Register Office. What had happened? And I was aware that I was in a taxi booked for another job straight after dropping us off, followed by three Harley- Davidsons. It wasn‘t possible to drive round and round Eastbourne until Roger finally decided to make an appear- ance!!!
