Useful Concepts An accidental bonsai (2018). This is a Genovese basil plant, a Western kitchen herb. It’s not supposed to be very long-lived. This is an old plant, and the trunk looks terrible. It has split and the bark is flaking. Some stems are also dead. Likewise, for cacti that are short- lived, you will be hard-pressed to keep them in great shape for many years. Many cacti are just green stems – how many regular green-stemmed leafy plants do you know that can live for many, many years and stay in good shape? The following piece is part of a collection of writings published on the Practical Small Cacti Malaysia site . Things to Think About Writing is a really useful activity, especially when it comes to writing about the cultivation of cacti in a tropical climate. Many a time, I thought I have understood something, but when I went over the material after a few months, I realized that I was on the wrong path. Over time, I have taken note of a number of concepts – things to think about – that helped to direct my lines of thought in the right direction. Synonymy, nomenclature and origin of plant material were sorted. The lists of species grown in the last 122 years are constructed in such a way as to show that throughout that period at least 1423 taxa of succulent plants from 254 genera and 17 families inhabited the Garden’s cold glass- house collection. The Executive Secretary is circulating herewith, for the information of participants in the twenty-first meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice, a report presenting a comprehensive overview of international trade in wildlife species listed in the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) in the Amazon countries: Bolivia; Brazil; Colombia; Ecuador; Guyana; Peru; Suriname; and Venezuela. The analysis provides a baseline of information on trade levels and trends in these countries for the 10-year period 2005-2014, in order to inform trade management in the region. It has been produced in close collaboration with national experts, presenting contextual information and insights into the management of wildlife trade in the region. 2. The report is relevant to the work of the Convention on Biological Diversity, in particular with regard to decision XIII/8, paragraph 5(d), in which the Conference of the Parties requests the Executive Secretary, in collaboration with other members of the Collaborative Partnership on Sustainable Wildlife Management, to continue to support efforts by Parties to combat illicit trafficking in wildlife, in line with United Nations General Assembly resolution 69/314 of 30 July 2015, and to enhance institutional capacities on wildlife conservation and law enforcement with relevant law enforcement bodies, such as the International Consortium on Combating Wildlife Crime. -

Abstract Chloroplast genomes (plastomes) are frequently treated as highly conserved among land plants. However, many lineages of vascular plants have experienced extensive structural rearrangements, including inversions and modifications to the size and content of genes. Cacti are one of these lineages, containing the smallest plastome known for an obligately photosynthetic angiosperm, including the loss of one copy of the inverted repeat (~25 kb) and the ndh genes suite, but only a few cacti from the subfamily Cactoideae have been sufficiently characterized. Here, we investigated the variation of plastome sequences across the second-major lineage of the Cactaceae, the subfamily Opuntioideae, to address 1) how variable is the content and arrangement of chloroplast genome sequences across the subfamily, and 2) how phylogenetically informative are the plastome sequences for resolving major relationships among the clades of Opuntioideae. -

In Brazil, Cactaceae is among the 10 most endangered families of national flora, making conservation measures essential for this family. In this paper, we document the species preserved in the ex situ collection at the Guimarães Duque Cactarium (CAGD) located in the National Institute of Semiarid, Paraíba state, Brazil. The collection consists of 158 species and 1013 specimens, including mostly Cactaceae and succulent representatives of eight other botanical families.
