    “I have the Fokker in sight!” After some delays caused by tropical cyclone “Gita” the first of our two Fokker F27 Friendship aircraft arrived from New Zealand on Monday 27 February. Now registered VH-EWH, the Friendship departed Auckland on Sunday 26 February, stopping to refuel at Norfolk Island before proceeding to Coolangatta to clear customs. The intention was to proceed to Wollongong that same day, but bad weather in the Illawarra dictated an overnight stay at Coolangatta. The second aircraft will be ferried sometime in the next few months. In Australian service the Fokker F27 Friendship was operated from the late 1950’s by many of the domestic and regional airlines. Some of the Australian airlines which operated the type include Trans Australia Airlines, Ansett ANA, East West, Queensland Airlines, Bill Peach’s Aircruising Australia and Airlines of NSW. The type was also operated by the Department of Civil Aviation and CSIRO. The Fokker F27 was developed during the early 1950’s and was intended to compete with or replace piston engine aircraft such as the DC-3. It uses Rolls Royce Dart turboprop engines, is pressurised and, in typical configuration seats around 50 passengers. Our F27s were most recently in service with a company that provided services to New Zealand Post and our Kiwi readers would be well familiar with the sight and unique sounds of the F27s as they made their way around the mail runs. MANFRED VON RICHTHOFEN AND THE LEGEND OF THE RED BARON Bogdan Gozman, PhD Candidate, ”Babeș-Bolyai” University of Cluj-Napoca Abstract: Of all the fighter pilots during World War I, Manfred von Richthofen gained a special place at that crucial moment in history, when heroes were so sorely needed, serving as a role model to be followed by men who were to distinguish themselves through extraordinary deeds. Credited with shooting down 80 enemy aircraft during the 20 months of fighting on the Western Front, for which he received 24 military decorations, Manfred was the most efficient and well-known flying ace of the Great War. In these few lines, we are trying to outline the process of heroizing young Manfred underwent, the factors that contributed to his transformation into a symbol and, not least, the actual grounds for his success. The German propaganda played an important role in this regard, his image being photographically disseminated and made public throughout Germany. Not only the soldiers, but also the ones on the home front could be enlivened if they were given a symbol to believe in, and Manfred had become such a symbol. The newspapers made constant reference to him and carefully avoided publishing information about his injuries in battle. His fame increased to such an extent that the renowned General Erich von Ludendorff considered Manfred to be the equivalent of no less than three infantry divisions. The explanation of Manfred von Richthofen’s success lies in the type of defensive air warfare that Germany waged for most of the armed conflict period.

    Dogfight A dogfight or dog fight is a common term used to describe close-range aerial combat between military aircraft. The term originated during World War I, and probably derives from the preferred fighter tactic of positioning one's aircraft behind the enemy aircraft. From this position, a pilot could fire his guns on the enemy without having to lead the target, and the enemy aircraft could not effectively fire back. The term came into existence because two women fighting is called a catfight, and all early fighter pilots were men, hence dogfight. This subsequently obtained its revised folk etymology about two dogs chasing each other's tails.[citation needed] Modern terminology for aerial combat between aircraft is air-to-air combat and air combat maneuvering, or ACM. F-22 Raptors over Utah in their first official deployment, Oct. 2005, simulating a dogfight. History World War I Dogfighting emerged in World War I. Aircraft were initially used as mobile observation vehicles and early pilots gave little thought to aerial combat—enemy pilots at first simply exchanged waves. Intrepid pilots decided to interfere with enemy reconnaissance by improvised means, including throwing bricks, grenades and sometimes rope, which they hoped would entangle the enemy plane's propeller. This progressed to pilots firing hand-held guns at enemy planes. Once machine guns were mounted to the plane, either in a turret or higher on the wings of early biplanes, the era of air combat began. The Germans acquired an early air superiority due to the invention of synchronization gear in 1915. During the first part of the war there was no established tactical doctrine for air-to-air combat.

    IAF Equipment and Force Structure Requirements to Meet External Threats, 2032 Vivek Kapur* In keeping with the theme ‘IAF Deep Multidimensional Change 2032: Imperatives and a Roadmap’, this article focuses on the responses to the external threat challenges that are likely to be face by IAF in 2032. These external challenges have been identified to be the individual Chinese and Pakistani threats as well as a combined Sino-Pak threat. The article confines itself to developing a possible force structure only in terms of numbers of combat and support aircraft of various types for 2032. It contains an examination of the currently planned IAF structure for the year 2022 and beyond, against the war-gamed force requirement for winning wars along our borders while retaining capability to project force in areas of national interest beyond our borders. The article underscores the fact that the current plan for the force structure requires to be enhanced to meet the challenges successfully. INTRODUCTION This article follows ‘Challenges for the Indian Air Force: 2032’ (Vol. 7, No. 1, January-March 2013), dealing with the main challenges Indian Air Force (IAF) is likely to face in 2032, when it completes a century. Here, I assess possible responses to the external challenges posed by the Peoples Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) and Pakistan Air Force (PAF).
