I spent 30+ years actively doing that about which I comment. The fact that I am no longer actively in mill work doesn't erase so much as one of those years. My reason for stopping are personal and not for public disclosure, but these reason had nothing to do with the failure of the various levels of technology with which I worked. >The show is just wonderful. Mills, with all their technology provide the means by which people can be provided with textiles of an extremely wide range of designs at a wide range of price points. Considering the alternative, this technology should be more appreciated rather than rebuffed. The fact that Peter chose to do things completely manually should not place him or anyone else similarly situated on a higher plane than any who chooses to do things by mechanical means. At the risk of sounding as if I am sidestepping the question, let me suggest that this kind of information, contained in many of the books in the bibliography posted a while ago, is best gleaned and studied elsewhere and brought back to the discussion. Just providing an understanding of the technical language alone used to describe what is implicit in the above list would require a massively long message. Two things handloom weavers need to do if they are interested in learning more about mill technloogy and then considering how it can be applied to handloom weaving at even the most basic level are: a)Read as much as you can lay your hands on about mill tecchnology. Books are out there and easily available through ILL. Study the mechanical principles involved in creating woven textiles regardless of the means used to produce them. Do all this before you go to... b) Get to as many mills as possible. Make whatever effort is required - 3 - WeaveTech Archive 9912 becaust the learning will be well worth it. Talk to mill people at every level and gain a better understanding of what they do and how much like ordinary people they are. Look past the visual confusion, noise and activity and most of all your own discomfort with the unfamiliar.     The French Connection: Indian Cottons, Their Early Modern Technology and Diffusion George Bryan Souza* Asia’s production of cotton and silk textiles, porcelain and the refining of base metals, zinc in particular, in the early modern period were more advanced than the rest of the world. Fundamental to Asia’s success and superiority in textile production was the technology employed by artisans in the selection of raw materials and the techniques used in their application and presentation. Before Europe could diverge technically from other parts of the globe, European textile manufacture had to converge through the acquisition and incorporation of new materials and technical knowledge from other parts of the globe, especially from India and China1 or, alternatively, through new or incremental advances in technical knowledge, production processes, machines, and apparatus.     The Jaina Cult of Relic Stūpas Peter Flügel1 (SOAS) Abstract This article gives an overview of recent findings on the thriving cult of bone relic stūpas in contemporary Jaina culture. Although Jaina doctrine rejects the worship of material objects, fieldwork in India on the hitherto unstudied current Jaina mortuary rituals furnished clear evidence for the ubiquity of bone relic stūpas and relic venera- tion across the Jaina sectarian spectrum. The article discusses a representative case and assesses the significance of the overall findings for the history of religions. It also offers a new theoretical explanation of the power of relics. DAMPENING (IN TIRE CORD): The relative ability to absorb energy and deaden oscillation after excitation. DECATING MARK: A crease mark or impression extending fillingwise across the fabric near the beginning or end of the piece. DECATIZING: A finishing process in which fabric, wound tightly on a perforated roller, either has hot water circulated through it (wet decatizing), or has steam blown through it (dry decatizing). The process is aimed chiefly at improving the hand and removing wrinkles. DECITEX: One tenth of a tex. DECORTICATING: A mechanical process for separating the woody matter from the bast fiber of such plants as ramie and hemp. DEEP-DYEING VARIANTS: Polymers that have been chemically modified to increase their dyeability. Fibers and fabrics made therefrom can be dyed to very heavy depth. DEFECTS: A general term that refers to some flaw in a textile product that detracts from either performance or appearance properties. DEFORMATION: A change in the shape of a specimen, e.g., an increase in length produced as the result of the application of a tensile load or force. Deformation may be immediate or delayed, and the latter may be recoverable or nonrecoverable. DEGRADATION: The loss of desirable physical properties by a textile material as a result of some process or physical/chemical phenomenon. Gates The creating of pattern in woven fabrics by placing design on the warps and/or wefts before they are woven is ancient. Primary examples of these textiles are ikat, which is a resist dyeing technique, and chine, in which design is painted or in some way printed on the tensioned warp yarns. This study investigated the use of the screen process method to print the design on tensioned warps in handwoven fabrics.Three experimental warps (cotton, linen, and rayon), were printed and woven. The interaction of the fiber content of the warp, set, weave, and the color of warp, weft, and print were observed. Assessments were made to determine combinations which would achieve a clear and forceful design statement. Results of experiments suggested the importance of selecting yarn for warp which is inelastic, relatively fine and which will allow thorough dye penetration.Best dye penetration was achieved in rayon, and best results were achieved when the warp was threaded and woven in a pattern which exposed a high proportion of the warp yarn.In addition, the printed design was strongest after weaving when both warp and weft threads were a neutral color of light value. Using the screen process method to print design on tensioned warps gave advantages of promoting thorough dye penetration, allowed speed and ease of design replication, and gave the possibility of achieving good precision in edges of design motif.

    SYLVIA HOUGHTELING THE EMPEROR’S HUMBLER CLOTHES Textures of Courtly Dress in Seventeenth- century South Asia Abstract This study reconstructs the humbler components of South Asian courtly ensembles worn by the greatest Mughal emperors, which included relatively inexpensive tie-dyed cloths made in Rajasthan and finely spun cotton muslins from Bengal. Court biographies, popular lexicons, and the letters sent from the Mughal court to its Rajput allies reveal that the fabrics used for dress in early modern South Asia were valued for sensory qualities, such as softness, saturation of color, and coolness on the skin, that went beyond the cost of the materials or the sophistication of the technology used to produce them. This project transports the study of dress in early modern South Asia beyond its current focus on the material wealth of imperial costumes to recover the sensory experience of wearing airy cotton and velvety wool, as well as the sophisticated intellectual, poetic, and political messages that could be carried in the fabric of a courtly coat. In his 1641 autobiography, the Jain merchant Banarasidas described the ways in which the tex- ture of life changed in the north Indian city of Jaunpur following news of the death of Emperor Akbar in 1605. “The people, bereft of their emperor, felt orphaned and hopeless,” he wrote.1 The wealthy feared that chaos would descend; they buried their jewelry and sealed their doors.
