Are These the Buddha Bones?
1 ARE THESE THE BUDDHA BONES? By Chan Khoon San After our Pilgrimage in 2002, we visited the Indian Museum in Delhi and saw the bone fragments found by the English planter W.C. Peppe in 1898 when he excavated the Piprahwa stupa in Basti District, Uttar Pradesh, India. Some of the excavated bone pieces were displayed in a miniature golden pavilion donated by the Government of Thailand. We were filled with immense joy at the sight such ‘sacred objects’, worshiping them with great enthusiasm. I took several photos of the bone fragments for remembrance. (See Plate 1) When we returned home, I took a second look at the bone fragments in my photos. That was when I began to have doubts about their authenticity. According to Thupavamsa, [1] the Buddha Gotama’s relics were scattered and may be divided into three sizes. The small relic has the size of a mustard seed, the great relic the size of a rice grain and the very great relic the size of a sprouted seed. But the bone relics that I saw were mega-size and looked suspicious. In 2004, when we visited Mulagandhakuti Vihara in Sarnath, we were shown a Buddha bone relic of 2 nd century AD discovered in 1913 by British archaeologist Sir John Marshall at the Dhammarajika Stupa in Taxila, Pakistan. The size and condition of this Buddha relic matched the description in Thupavamsa. This reinforced my doubts about the authenticity of the bones of Piprahwa stupa. In May 2013, the National Geographic screened a documentary about the Piprahwa stupa entitled “The Bones of the Buddha”, claiming that the area at Piprahwa stupa is the site of the Sakyan capital Kapilavastu, and that the bones found were the bones of the Buddha. -

Hand weaving is a lost art form that needs to be revived by students and young textile professionals, thus being part of the inspiration for this garment. Inspiration was also drawn from a colorful piece of artwork at the North Carolina Museum of Art. Frank Philip Stella’s Raqqa II is a fusion of bright, vibrant colors that seamlessly intertwine, following the curves and edges of the canvas. I believe that the shapes formed by the bands of color, mirror the shape of the model’s body because of the form fitting dress. -

STUDY MATERIAL UNIT I TEXTILE CHEMICAL PROCESSING Learning Outcome After finishing this unit, students will be able to understand – Various technical terminology used in the industry. Various types of impurities presents in the substrates. The processes involved in removing impurities. Overview In this chapter students will get to know about various techniques of preparatory process of textile material which is the essential part of the processing. Without preparatory process it is very difficult to achieve the desire result in the dyeing, printing and finishing process. After studying this chapter, the students will be familiarized and will be able to understand terminology used in the Industry, impurities present in natural and synthetic fibers (Raw Cotton, Wool, Silk, Polyester, Nylon and Acrylic) and their effective and cost economic removal. This unit also deals with Chemical Processes, Chemical Treatment, Process Flowcharts of Cotton, Wool, Silk and Synthetic fibers, Elementary Knowledge of Sizing, Resizing, Scouring & Bleaching. After understanding these terminology students will be able to know the processes involved in achieving desired fabric quality. 1 INTRODUCTION TO CHEMICAL PROCESSING: PRE-TREATMENTS 1.1 TEXTILE CHEMICAL PROCESSING FOR THE FIBERS (PREPARATORY OPERATIONS) Newly constructed fabric as it comes from the mill is called gray good. This does not imply that the fabric is gray in color, it simply denotes any unfinished fabric. The goods must pass through various finishing processes to make it suitable for its intended end use. Finishing may change the appearance of the fabric, its hand (feel), its serviceability, and its durability. Gray goods must be cleaned before they can be finished. -

International Journal of Jaina Studies (Online) Vol. 3, No. 4 (2007) 1-15 A SHORT HISTORY OF JAINA LAW1 Peter Flügel The nineteenth century English neologism ‘Jaina law’ is a product of colonial legal intervention in India from 1772 onwards. 'Jaina law' suggests uniformity where in reality there is a plurality of scriptures, ethical and legal codes, and customs of sect, caste, family and region. The contested semantics of the term reflect alternative attempts by the agents of the modern Indian legal system and by Jain reformers to restate traditional Jain concepts. Four interpretations of the modern term 'Jaina law' can be distinguished: (i) 'Jaina law' in the widest sense signifies the doctrine and practice of jaina dharma, or Jaina ‘religion’. (ii) In a more specific sense it points to the totality of conventions (vyavahāra) and law codes (vyavasthā) in Jaina monastic and lay traditions.2 Sanskrit vyavasthā and its Arabic and Urdu equivalent qānūn both designate a specific code of law or legal opinion/decision, whereas Sanskrit dharma can mean religion, morality, custom and law. (iii) The modern Indian legal system is primarily concerned with the 'personal law' of the Jaina laity. In Anglo-Indian case law, the term 'Jaina law' was used both as a designation for 'Jain scriptures' (śāstra) on personal law, and for the unwritten 'customary laws' of the Jains, that is the social norms of Jain castes (jāti) and clans (gotra). (iv) In 1955/6 Jaina personal law was submerged under the statutory 'Hindu Code', and is now only indirectly recognised by the legal system in the form of residual Jain 'customs' to be proved in court. -
