[email protected] Resum S'ha investigat la diversitat morfològica en 129 espècies de lacèrtids i la seva relació amb l'ecologia, per mitjà de mètodes comparatius, utilitzant set variables morfomètriques. La mida corporal és la variable més important, determinant un gradient entre espècies de petita i gran mida independentment evolucionades al llarg de la filogènia dels lacèrtids. Aquesta variable està forta i positivament correlacionada amb les altres, emmascarant els patrons de diversitat morfològica. Anàlisis multivariants en les variables ajustades a la mida corporal mostren una covariació negativa entre les mides relatives de la cua i les extremitats. Remarcablement, les espècies arborícoles i semiarborícoles (Takydromus i el clade africà equatorial) han aparegut dues vegades independentment durant l'evolució dels lacèrtids i es caracteritzen per cues extremadament llargues i extremitats anteriors relativament llargues en comparació a les posteriors. El llangardaix arborícola i planador Holaspis, amb la seva cua curta, constitueix l’única excepció. Un altre cas de convergència ha estat trobat en algunes espècies que es mouen dins de vegetació densa o herba (Tropidosaura, Lacerta agilis, Takydromus amurensis o Zootoca) que presenten cues llargues i extremitats curtes. Al contrari, les especies que viuen en deserts, estepes o matollars amb escassa vegetació aïllada dins grans espais oberts han desenvolupat extremitats posteriors llargues i anteriors curtes per tal d'assolir elevades velocitats i maniobrabilitat. Aquest és el cas especialment de Acanthodactylus i Eremias Abstract Morphologic diversity was studied in 129 species of lacertid lizards and their relationship with ecology by means of comparative analysis on seven linear morphometric measurements. -

LIST OF REPTILES AND AMPHIBIANS OF NYIKA NATIONAL PARK AND VWAZA MARSH WILDLIFE RESERVE This checklist of all reptile and amphibian species recorded from the Nyika National Park and immediate surrounds (both in Malawi and Zambia) and from the Vwaza Marsh Wildlife Reserve was compiled by Dr Donald Broadley of the Natural History Museum of Zimbabwe in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, in November 2013. It is arranged in zoological order by scientific name; common names are given in brackets. The notes indicate where are the records are from. Endemic species (that is species only known from this area) are indicated by an E before the scientific name. Further details of names and the sources of the records are available on request from the Nyika Vwaza Trust Secretariat. E-mail: [email protected] Abstract A striking new sandveld lizard of the Nucras tessellata group is described from the Lambert’s Bay Strandveld of the West- ern Cape Province, South Africa. It is sister to the clade N. livida + N. tessellata, and is phenetically most similar to N. tessellata, from which it differs in its more elongate body and possibly increased number of presacral vertebrae and pat- ternless orange dorsal coloration. The form elegans, described as a species by Andrew Smith (1838), but treated as an infrasubspecific variant by Broadley (1972), also exhibits weak patterning, but is likely a regional color variant. Nucras aurantiaca sp. nov. is the ninth member of the genus found in southern Africa. -

Despite their family-wide homology of Z-specific gene content, previous cytogenetic studies revealed significant variability in the size, morphology, and heterochromatin distribution of their W chromosome. However, there is little evidence about the accumulation and distribution of repetitive content on lacertid chromosomes, especially on their W chromosome. In order to expand our knowledge of the evolution of sex chromosome repetitive content, we examined the topology of telomeric and microsatellite motifs that tend to often accumulate on the sex chromosomes of reptiles in the karyotypes of 15 species of lacertids by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). -

PART ONE GENERAL 1. Short Title These Regulations m ay be cited as the "Wildlife Developm ent, Conservation and Utilization Council of Ministers Regulations No. 163/2008". 2. Definitions In these Regulations, unless the context otherwise requires: 1/ “Proclamation” m eans the Develo pment, Conservation a nd Utiliz ation of Wildlife Proclamation No. 541/2007; 2/ the definitions provided under Artic le 2 of the Proclam ation shall be applicable; 3/ “authorized officer” means the Direct or General, Departm ent head, game warden, w ildlife expert, gam e scou t, assistant gam e scout, anti-poaching officer of the Authority or any othe r person appointed in writing b y the Authority to fulfill the functions under the provisions of this regulations; 4/ “community wildlife development, conservation and utilization area” means any conserv ation area outside pro tected areas adm inistered by eithe r the government or private concessionaire , and put under the m anagement and utilization of the local community; 5/ “license” means a permit given to any legal dealer or owner of wildlife and their products and includ e trophy hunting permit, hunting operation perm it, capturing permit, taxidermy per mit, live export permit, ownership certificate and wildlife filming permit. -

Some amphibians and reptiles from southern Mali and southwestern Burkina Faso have been deposited in the Zoologisches Forschungsmuseum Alexander Koenig (ZFMK) since the year 2000. Supplemented by some photographic voucher material they contain several remarkable, in some cases even new records for the two respective countries. Malian specimens were collected mainly in the region between Douentza and Bandiagara in the south-central part of the country, while those from Burkina Faso are from the Bobo Dioulasso area in the southwestern part of the country. Three amphibian species are new for Mali’s faunal list (Leptopelis bufonides, Ptychadena trinodis, Pyxicephalus sp. as the first represen- tative of its genus). Two specimens of a small-sized Agama species cannot yet be assigned to a described species with certainty but are in any case of zoogeographical interest. A specimen of Chamaeleo gracilis documents the second record of this species for Burkina Faso, the first one in the western part of the country. -

JAN. 1950 A. LOVERIDGE, "HIstory a1td Habtts of the B.A. Bull/rog HISTORY AND HABITS OF THE EAST AFRICAN BULLFROG By Arthur Loveridge (Museum of Comparative Zoology, Cambridge, Massachusets). The receipt by the Coryndon Memorial Museum of a Machakos bullfrog (Rana adspersa edulis) with a length from snout to anus of 61;4inches (160 rom.), reveals that the East African bullfrog attains dimensions comparable with those of the typical South African form (Rana adspersa adspersa) of which it should be regarded as a race. The precise delimitation of ranges for the forms must remain unsettled till adequate series of the two races from Mozambique and neighbouring territories have been studied. For present convenience the Zambesi may be regarded as marking the southern limits of the East African bullfrog. If the river is really the limiting factor, the type locality must be restricted, to "mainland opposite Mozambique Island," for the type material of Pyxicephalus edulis Peters (1854, Ber. Akad. Wiss. Berlin, p. 626) came from three locali• ties, one of which- Tete-is on the south bank of the Zambesi. So slight are the differences between the two races that Boulenger (1882, Cat. Batr. SaI. Brit. Mus., p. 33) referred edulis to the synonym of Rana adspersa (Tschudi, 1838) with which it has long been confused. It is an open question whether Pyxicephalus, characterised by robust habit, short limbs, and a digging tubercle on the heel, should be regarded as a full genus or, as I prefer, accorded subgeneric status. Young bullfrogs are so utterly unlike the adults that it is not surprising that four juveniles from Quilimane, Mozambique, should have been designated Phrynopsis boulengeri by Pfeffer (1893, Jahrb. -
