Trojan Women: Introduction 1. Gods in the Trojan Women Two gods take the stage in the prologue to Trojan Women. Are these gods real or abstract? In the prologue, with its monologue by Poseidon followed by a dialogue between the master of the sea and Athena, we see them as real, as actors (perhaps statelier than us, and accoutered with their traditional props, a trident for the sea god, a helmet for Zeus’ daughter). They are otherwise quite ordinary people with their loves and hates and with their infernal flexibility whether moral or emotional. They keep their emotional side removed from humans, distance which will soon become physical. Poseidon cannot stay in Troy, because the citizens don’t worship him any longer. He may feel sadness or regret, but not mourning for the people who once worshiped but now are dead or soon to be dispersed. He is not present for the destruction of the towers that signal his final absence and the diaspora of his Phrygians. He takes pride in the building of the walls, perfected by the use of mason’s rules. After the divine departures, the play proceeds to the inanition of his and Apollo’s labor, with one more use for the towers before they are wiped from the face of the earth. Nothing will be left. It is true, as Hecuba claims, her last vestige of pride, the name of Troy remains, but the place wandered about throughout antiquity and into the modern age. At the end of his monologue Poseidon can still say farewell to the towers. -

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles The Orphan-Hero in Italian Renaissance Epic A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in Italian by Sarah Sixmith Vogdes Cantor 2020 © Copyright by Sarah Sixmith Vogdes Cantor 2020 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION The Orphan-Hero in Italian Renaissance Epic by Sarah Sixmith Vogdes Cantor Doctor of Philosophy in Italian University of California, Los Angeles, 2020 Professor Andrea Moudarres, Chair “The Orphan-Hero in Italian Renaissance Epic” investigates a commonplace present in epic poetry from antiquity to the Renaissance: the orphan-hero, a protagonist who grows up without the guidance of biological parents. The study traces this figure from its origins to the early modern period, beginning with classical epic in the introduction and focusing on 16th- and early 17th- century Italian poems in the body of the dissertation, namely Ludovico Ariosto’s Orlando furioso (1532), Torquato Tasso’s Gerusalemme liberata (1581), Tullia d’Aragona’s Il Meschino (1560), Moderata Fonte’s Floridoro (1581), Margherita Sarrocchi’s Scanderbeide (1623), and LucreZia Marinella’s L’Enrico (1635). Through analysis of these works, I address the following critical questions: 1) What links orphanhood and heroism? 2) Why might poets deem this tradition worthy of continuation? 3) Do modifications to the orphan-hero by different Renaissance authors reveal or emphasiZe shifts in thinking during the period? In particular, to what extent do the female authors fashion their orphan-heroes to fit an early modern feminist purpose? ii I propose that the vulnerability inherent in the parentless state is significant to the subsequent development of heroic qualities in Renaissance epic heroes. -
Homer – the Iliad
HOMER – THE ILIAD Homer is the author of both The Iliad and The Odyssey. He lived in Ionia – which is now modern day Turkey – between the years of 900-700 BC. Both of the above epics provided the framework for Greek education and thought. Homer was a blind bard, one who is a professional story teller, an oral historian. Epos or epic means story. An epic is a particular type of story; it involves one with a hero in the midst of a battle. The subject of the poem is the Trojan War which happened approximately in 1200 BC. This was 400 years before the poem was told by Homer. This story would have been read aloud by Homer and other bards that came after him. It was passed down generation to generation by memory. One can only imagine how valuable memory was during that time period – there were no hard drives or memory sticks. On a tangential note, one could see how this poem influenced a culture; to be educated was to memorize a particular set of poems or stories which could be cross-referenced with other people’s memory of those particular stories. The information would be public and not private. The Iliad is one of the greatest stories ever told – a war between two peoples; the Greeks from the West and the Trojans from the East. The purpose of this story is to praise Achilles. The two worlds are brought into focus; the world of the divine order and the human order. The hero of the story is to bring greater order and harmony between these two orders. -

A hero is someone exemplary, who excels above the rest of his or her peers in courage, virtue, character, and honor. The hero’s life is based on the achievement of a goal—the culmination of all heroic efforts. This goal-oriented life is best evidenced in the heroes of epic. In epic, the goal which all heroes strive for is the achievement of kleos. This Greek term, kleos, can be defined simply as “glory,” yet it means so much more to the epic hero. Kleos is everlasting glory or “the fame beyond even death that accrues to a hero because of his heroic feats” (Toohey 6). For the epic hero, the only way to gain kleos is by fighting—and most likely dying—in battle. Homer’s Odysseus (Odyssey) and Achilles (Iliad) epitomize the epic hero. These warriors, throughout their individual epic stories, undergo a journey in the pursuit of kleos, transforming themselves into the foremost Greeks both in battle and intelligence. -

"Andromache as Maenadic Warrior" Sean Signore SEAN SIGNORE ANDROMACHE AS MAENADIC WARRIOR In Book twenty-two line 460, Andromache rushes towards the walls of Troy: ὣς φαμένη μεγάροιο διέσσυτο μαινάδι ἴση So speaking, she rushed from the house, equal to a maenad1 What does the phrase μαινάδι ἴση mean in this context? Segal writes that “if μαινάδι means maenad and not simply mad woman (likely, but not absolutely certain), we would have another instance of Homer drawing upon a relatively unfamiliar realm of experience for an unusual degree of emotion.”2 I argue that a link arises from the adaptation of the warrior formula δαίμονι ἶσος to an expression tailored for Andromache. This phrase that only occurs once, μαινάδι ἴση, is adapted from an inherently masculine formula and made appropriate by Andromache's gender and grief. Through a formulaic3 comparison with δαίμονι ἶσος and an analysis of both the nominal form μαινάς and corresponding verb μαίνομαι within epic, μαινάδι ἴση, I argue, elevates Andromache to a divine status as great as a warrior who is δαίμονι ἶσος. Gutzwiller, Ph.D. Abstract This dissertation examines the role of elegy in the Thebaid by Statius, from allusion at the level of words or phrases to broad thematic resonance. It argues that Statius attributes elegiac language and themes to characters throughout the epic, especially women. Statius thus activates certain women in the epic as disruptors, emphasizing the ideological conflict between the genres of Latin love elegy and epic poetry. While previous scholarship has emphasized the importance of Statius’ epic predecessors, or the prominence of tragic allusion in the plot, my dissertation centers the role of elegy in this epic. First, I argue that Statius relies on allusion to the genre of elegy to signal the true divine agent of the civil war at Thebes: Vulcan. Vulcan’s erotic jealousy over Venus’ affair with Mars leads him to create the Necklace of Harmonia. Imbued with elegiac resonance, the necklace comes to Argia with corrupted elegiac imagery. Statius characterizes Argia within the dynamic of the elegiac relicta puella and uses this framework to explain Argia’s gift of the necklace to Eriphyle and her advocacy for Argos’ involvement in the war. By observing the full weight of the elegiac imagery in these scenes, I show that Argia mistakenly causes the death of Polynices and the devastation at Thebes as the result of Vulcan’s elegiac curse. -

ABSTRACT The reader who rewrites remains a vital interlocutor between the classical past and the modern classicist. However, the neglect of the female reader in classical reception studies is an omission that becomes ever more conspicuous, and surely less sustainable, as women writers continue to dominate the contemporary creative field. This thesis makes the first steps towards fashioning a new aesthetic model for the female reader based on irony, ambivalence, and indeterminacy. I consider works by Virginia Woolf, Alice Oswald, Elizabeth Cook, and Yael Farber, all of whom largely abandon ‘resistance’ as a strategy of rereading and demand a new theoretical framework that can engage with and recognize the multivalence of women’s reading and rewriting. -

Female Agency in Homer’s Iliad An examination of Helen and Andromache’s development of an emerging female voice within the confines of a patriarchal society, as expressed by their relationship to traditional female objects, the loom and the marriage bed in their social protests. The figures of Helen and Andromache in Homer’s Iliad provide an opportunity to track the evolution of female agency in Classical epic. Andromache has often been regarded as a foil to the character of Helen, since she is steadfastly devoted to her husband, and represents the virtues expected of a dutiful Greek wife. Helen, on the other hand, is a foreign temptress, unfaithful to her first husband and disinterested in her second. However, both Helen and Andromache subtly express themselves within the female domain and challenge their traditional roles in order to gain a sense of agency. They are rebellious, both in their wavering between male and female domains and in their admonishing speeches. These women are implicitly paralleled by means of linguistic echoes and items, symbolizing women’s domestic obligation, namely, the loom and the marriage bed, which each character invokes. In Book 3, Helen is found in her chambers, weaving depictions of battle scenes from the first nine years of the Trojan War (Hom., Il., 3.121-128). Helen uses the loom, a traditionally feminine object, to explore the primarily male realm of warfare, to demonstrate her active role in its causation, and to express her frustration and regret. Unable to take a more active role with the proceedings of the war, her only outlet for expressing her social protest is to covertly comment on it through her female craft.
