Luck is a bitch and there’s always a hitch It didn’t take long, now don’t get meYukon wrong-- Belle In every perfect scheme; They sweated and cursed like the rest, You follow the plan and find it’s a scam But they did the job well, built the -- And there goes your lifelong dream. Their boat was one of the best. But before you despair and pull out your hair, Remember this bit of advice: So they sailed away, for a month and a day Till their muscles and bones felt real weak. If luck shows her face and you’re in that place So he talked to his mother and said he would rather Grab your chance, trust the roll of the dice. Through wind and through rain, through hardship and pain, Write than do anything else; Take a chair and sit down, get rid of that frown, And they landed at Henderson Creek. She said, “Do it, Jack”, and never look back-- There’s a tale I’m dying to tell; Your books will soon fill a shelf.” They panned out some gold and then they were told It’s about Lady Luck, about making a buck-- He wrote and he sailed, and hisCall pen of never the Wild failed, Do not fear, for it all turns out well. That mining was an unlucky game So they staked while they could, on the creek where A thousand words every day; There was a boy named Jack whose nanny was they stood, Lady Luck smiled, he wrote , black And put the ground in their name. He was paid two thousand they say. And he asked her for help one day, “I need money right now for a small fishing scow. Then they went down to see Dawson town Jack’s early life was one of great strife, You can trust me, so what do you say?” With the bars, the girls, and the light; You’ll have to admit it was tough; Jack loved it all, enjoyed it that fall No one would shame him or eventually blame him So she gave him the cash and he made a dash In December he got out of sight. If he laid down his pen and gave up. For the harbour where he spotted the boat; French Frank took the gold, Back to his claims to make some small gains-- Lady Luck looked askance, and she wouldn’t dance The skiff was soon sold, He felt he had to get rich; So Jack had to go on his way-- And Jack made sure it would float. So he dug and he panned, and said I’ll be damned He wasn’t a fool, he just played it cool, But I see Lady Luck is a bitch. He knew he would change it one day. He went out in the bay in his indomitable way And stole oysters out of the nets; The winter was rough, there wasn’t enough-- What I’m trying to say, in a roundabout way He hated his job so decided to rob The food didn't make them feel healthy; Is that Jack seized his chance when it came; And paid off all of his debts. Jack’s teeth all fell out, he had scurvy no doubt When he didn’t find gold, and his books weren’t sold Still he hoped one day to be wealthy. He kept up his hopes all the same. His mother was cross and she was the boss So he joined the state fish patrol; Jack and the doc, they had a short talk And then by his pluck he turned Lady Luck He was shot at and cursed but his career was Decided to get out of there quick And forced her to look his way; reversed, Put on some speed, said “Yes, indeed, She couldn’t refuse him, or even confuse him And his pockets were always full. Lady Luck is playing a trick.” And we’re reading Jack’s books to this day. The job didn’t last and he was back pretty fast So they cut some trees down, made a raft, went to town Jack needed to eat some good food; To work on the factory floor; Like I said at the start, luck’s a bitch, do your part Father Judge fed them there, and he sent out a prayer-- He toiled and he thought, “A slave I am not, You really don’t need to look back They were both in a much better mood. I’ll be damned, but I’ll do this no more.” Its your life, you live it, its your luck, you give it The luck of the rich raised his mind to a pitch Jack, he said, you look good, but in your case I would The best that you’ve got, stay on track. Head home, you can always come back-- He would travel, and then he would see; And then if you alter, your path and you falter With rest and good feeding you’ll get what you’re Got a job on a ship, it was a great trip You’ll know you gave your best shot, needing. From Japan to the Bering Sea. You'll feel like a fighter, your sun will shine brighter, We’ve got you on the right track. When he got back, he grabbed his rucksack Whether riches follow or not. He bought a boat then, and took up his pen, And headed for the open road; While I’m ending this tale, I know I would fail, He started to write on that trip-- Learned to jump trains and weather the rains: If I didn’t give Jack the last word, About the dogs and the gold, the dark and the cold, Crossed the country and back in this mode. So I’ll paraphrase, the words that he says That had them all in its grip. He wanted to write but in his dire plight Though Jack might find this absurd. His mother was glad to see her good lad He decided he was no fool; He said, don’t complain if your life is a pain But his father had died in that time; He’d stop drinking with crooks and start hitting And all that is left is the shards Jack said, “ I will work, you won’t see me shirk, the books: It isn’t the hand, you should understand This family will live on my dime. Jack went and enrolled in school. But what you do with the cards. “I’ll deliver the mail, come rain, snow or hail, School wasn’t much fun and soon Jack was done-- The function of man is to live, and to give, It’s clear that I need a job; He would learn to write by himself; Not just to exist, so, God damn it So dry up your tears and give up your fears-- He stayed up all night after learning to type, I ‘d rather be, a meteor you see You don’t need to cry and to sob." Rejection slips stacked on the shelf. Than a sleepy and a permanent planet. So Jack wrote a test, and they said it was best He was just twenty with energy a-plenty So I’ll sing a wild song, if you like, come along, That he wait for a month or two; Wasting it in drinking and strife And don’t be afraid to sing loudly They’d call him they said,” Just use your head, So he went forth to find gold in the north-- Every muscle and joint will feel joy, that’s the point-- Be patient, this job is for you.” He wanted a much better life. Live life to the hilt, do it proudly.” He had lots of time and scarcely a dime Eliza his sister, oh how he missed her! Jack died too young, before he was done, So he wrote by day and by night, Had mortgaged her house for his plan; He was still writing books at the end, He remembered it well, that dark living hell, Carried hundred pound packs, yes, those are the But I know what he’d say if I asked him today-- He recalled the return of the light. facts, He’d say Lady Luck was his friend. He was young, but he was a man. The dogs and the gold, the snow and the cold His partners were older, but Jack was much bolder The beauty of the frozen land, So he did the lion’s share; The mountains and trees, the lights that one sees Lindeman Lake was the destination to make-- And the feel of frost on your hand. By the end of a month they were there. He sent his tales out, with trepidation no doubt; He was excited as well, like a kid-- Great sights they saw, it had them in awe They paid him to write, it was a delight There were boats that were made out of trees; To get cash in the mail, and he did. But Jack was a pro, let me tell you, I know-- The project to him was a breeze. P22 WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 30, 2013 THE KLONDIKE SUN
