2Details of all our Christmas Services will be in the December Magazine. Editorial – by Margaret Baker - Curate

November brings with it the theme of Remembrance what with it being All Saints Day on the 1st, when the Church remembers those whose Christian lives on this earth have now ended and continue with God.

Then on the 13th we hold our annual Memorial Service, when we especially remember those who have died during this past year. Also on the 13th it is Remembrance Sunday when we reflect on the many tragic results of wars especially those who lost their lives through conflict and the need for world peace.

It struck me while taking funerals recently, just how we all remember different things, and how these different memories can be about the same person or even situation but don’t ever match up completely, and it’s all to do with our individual uniqueness, how what makes a mark on one person might be very different from another. What can we learn from this fact about ourselves to help us on our own journeys through life with and alongside others and especially on our walk with God?

I think that it is the importance of valuing everyone’s contribution even if we don’t feel the same way and not feel that one or other is right or wrong, because ultimately its only God who knows the complete truth.

We are so quick to judge and don’t give people the chance to respond or try things in a different way to what we are used too. Yet if we did it might just be the response which would give us the opportunity to share Gods love for everyone.

Our words and actions can and are remembered by people for a long time, the good and the bad together have an impact, which is part of life. Yet our challenge as Christians is to share Jesus by who we are, what we say, and what we do.

INTO THE DEEPS

Give me a candle of the Spirit. O God, as I go down into the deeps of my being.

Show me the hidden things, the creatures of my dreams, the storehouse of forgotten memories and hurts.

Take me to the spring of my life, And tell me my nature and my name.

Give me freedom to grow, so that I may become that self, the seed of which you planted in me at my making. 6 Out of the depths I cry to you, O God Introducing the new Bishop of Doncaster

It has been announced that The Venerable Peter Burrows, 56, is to be the new Bishop of Doncaster. Born in Derby, he is married to Jane and they have two grown up children, Adam and Amie. Peter began his ministry in Bradford in 1983 and returned to it as archdeacon of Leeds in 2005. This will be his first experience of working in the south and east of the County but he is relishing the task.

The new Bishop brings wide experience of ministry, vocations, training and education. He will be the sponsoring bishop for ordination in the Diocese and will take the lead on education.

He said: “I am very positive and excited by the developing diocesan vision for growth and the development of lay and ordained ministries that are able to respond to the changing demands and opportunities of our communities. I have a real passion for enabling the church, at all levels, to engage with those parts of society that we have little contact with or perhaps feel uncomfortable around.

“During my time in Leeds I have worked with colleagues at all levels of parish and diocesan life to help parishes focus on mission development, Pioneer ministries and Fresh Expressions. I am a great believer in the development of lay ministry alongside increasingly diverse models of ordained and pioneer ministry,” he said. “I look forward to getting to know the people of South and East Yorkshire and the wider diocese better over the next few months and to working with Bishop Steven.”

Peter said that he relaxes by doing many of the things which everyone enjoys (reading, walking etc) but he would count cooking Indian food, hospitality and Motor Racing amongst his favourite interests and he likes to watch the odd game of Rugby League. He also enjoys city breaks, exploring new cities and enjoying their culture and history.

Peter will be consecrated as a Bishop in York Minster on 2 February and welcome services are being planned in Sheffield Cathedral (5 February) and in Doncaster Minster (11 February). 7 Dear Theophilus… You’ll no doubt remember Zacchaeus, the little (or should I say ‘vertically challenged’) and fraudulent tax collector from Jericho who wanted to catch a glimpse of Jesus as he passed through his home town. Being vertically challenged in a crowd can be a pain, so I am told. But Zacchaeus, a man who knew how to get what he wanted, shins up a handy sycamore tree and gets a bird’s eye view.

And then the tables turn on Zacchaeus; Jesus spots him in the tree and invites himself back to Zac’s for tea. The man who spends his life auditing the affairs of others, suddenly finds his own life under scrutiny, and with amazing results. He gives away half of his wealth to the poor and to those he has cheated he repays four times over. And Jesus declares “Today salvation has come to this house.” You can read the sto- ry of Zacchaeus in Luke 19.

Zacchaeus found salvation when he met Jesus, and that salvation was demonstrated by a change in lifestyle. A wealthy and fraudulent tax collector becomes an honest and generous philanthropist.

All of this set me thinking about the way in which my faith in Jesus affects the way I live my life. In what ways is my life different today from what it would be if I wasn’t a Christian? Apart from attending church on Sundays, would people notice a difference?

Maybe each of us should invite Jesus to do an internal audit of our lives: our relationships, the way we manage our possessions and finances and the way we use our skills and talents in his service. This might sound risky, but Zacchaeus did it gladly and, if salvation truly has come to us, the evidence must be seen in the way we live our lives.

David

Theophilus is the guy for whom Luke wrote the Gospel of Luke and the book of Acts. (Luke 1:3 and Acts 1:1) Theophilus means ‘Lover of God’ so, if you love God, it was written for you!

15 Mission Partners – Hansi & Kath Jain

Almost everyone we talk to says that it’s “that-time-of-year” again! What do they mean? Well, it’s the most celebrated event worldwide! In Kerala (Kath’s home State), it is called Onam! Harvest is plentiful and the barns are filled for the year. This celebration of harvest in Old Testament was a thanksgiving. An offering of first sheaf harvested was given to the Lord as an expression of gratitude for his bountiful blessing. As a Family, Kath and I have much to offer in gratitude and thanks at this thanksgiving season. For the Lord not only took pity on us and looked on our tears, pain, sense of failure and confusion, he also provided for us that much needed assurance, guidance and provision for our daily bread. The Lord answered when this ‘poor man cried...’ THANK YOU LORD! (Psalm 34: 4,6.8-10)

Since January 2011 we have run a once monthly seminar for newly-weds and young couples and for parents of teenagers. We are delighted to tell you that we have a new batch of couples and parents are now in the pipeline for us to begin again in January 2012. On 2nd October 2011 we launched Nagpur Bible Lovers Bible Study. We are starting with Colossians!

Family News We are both treasuring the experience of becoming grandparents! Shayan Jain was born May 20th. Everyone has decided that we shall call him by that name, without a nickname. I guess that honor shall remain for his friends in school/college. Sheetal had a normal delivery even though Shayan is a ‘big’ baby with a weight of 7.3lbs. Shayan is now 4 months old and we are looking forward to his return from a trip visiting his aunts, grandparents, and cousins. Sunny completes his 3year bond commitment with A.G. Church Mission Hospital, Kolkata in March 2012. Anu works in Pune. We continue to pray asking the Lord to bless her and make her a blessing to many. As for Leo and Joy, they continue to be a great company and keep the thieves and robbers away!

17 Egyptian atrocity draws world’s attention to Christian suffering

Clashes between Coptic Christians and security forces in Cairo on 9 October left 26 Copts dead and 300 injured as soldiers fired on civilians and military vehicles ran over protesters. The Copts were also set upon by the regime’s supporters as they marched in protest over an arson attack on a church and accused the country’s interim military rulers of being too lenient on Muslims responsible for several anti-Christian attacks.

A BBC reporter reflected on a “chaotic period of political transition during which public frustration has mounted. Christians in particular have felt increasingly vulnerable. Instead of seeing reforms, they point out that Islamist extremists, known as Salafis, have gained more free rein. They are suspected of being behind many of the attacks on Copts. The march started off relatively peacefully, but as darkness fell, chaos was unleashed. Military police in riot gear moved in and I saw gangs of young men throwing rocks at the demonstrators as they tried to run away”.

Peter Kerridge of Premier Christian Media Trust recognised the powerful role the media has played in Egypt – “inciting the public to demonise Christians and see them further marginalised in Egyptian public life. Fortunately the violence was well documented; video and still footage has provided stark evidence that the army attacked the crowds without provocation and showed security officers deliberately driving armoured personnel carriers at the marchers”.

In the aftermath, Egypt’s deputy prime minister resigned in disgust. The military held emergency talks with Christian leaders, ordered an investigation but denied they were behind the violence. A Muslim-based political party has allegedly expressed its backing for the removal of longstanding legal barriers to building churches. In Cairo, thousands of Copts heeded a call to fast and pray for three days to mourn their dead.

- Pray for the bereaved, for all Christians in Egypt, and for a just government which will prosper all Egyptians.

The media have also given much attention to the trial in Iran of Pastor Yousef Nadarkhani on a charge of apostasy (from his Muslim back- ground). From 26- 28 September he appeared in court three times and was asked each day to renounce his faith in order to annul the charge and lift the death sentence. He refused each time. A final verdict is awaited, probably from Iran’s supreme leader. Prayer needed. 18 Contact Us
