Editorial – by Margaret Baker - Curate November brings with it the theme of Remembrance what with it being All Saints Day on the 1st, when the Church remembers those whose Christian lives on this earth have now ended and continue with God. Then on the 13th we hold our annual Memorial Service, when we especially remember those who have died during this past year. Also on the 13th it is Remembrance Sunday when we reflect on the many tragic results of wars especially those who lost their lives through conflict and the need for world peace. It struck me while taking funerals recently, just how we all remember different things, and how these different memories can be about the same person or even situation but don’t ever match up completely, and it’s all to do with our individual uniqueness, how what makes a mark on one person might be very different from another. What can we learn from this fact about ourselves to help us on our own journeys through life with and alongside others and especially on our walk with God? I think that it is the importance of valuing everyone’s contribution even if we don’t feel the same way and not feel that one or other is right or wrong, because ultimately its only God who knows the complete truth. We are so quick to judge and don’t give people the chance to respond or try things in a different way to what we are used too. Yet if we did it might just be the response which would give us the opportunity to share Gods love for everyone. Our words and actions can and are remembered by people for a long time, the good and the bad together have an impact, which is part of life. Yet our challenge as Christians is to share Jesus by who we are, what we say, and what we do. The next Rivers Team Magazine will be available at the end of November. Show me the hidden things, the creatures of my dreams, the storehouse of forgotten memories and hurts. Take me to the spring of my life, And tell me my nature and my name. Give me freedom to grow, so that I may become that self, the seed of which you planted in me at my making. 6 Out of the depths I cry to you, O God Introducing the new Bishop of Doncaster It has been announced that The Venerable Peter Burrows, 56, is to be the new Bishop of Doncaster. Born in Derby, he is married to Jane and they have two grown up children, Adam and Amie. Peter began his ministry in Bradford in 1983 and returned to it as archdeacon of Leeds in 2005. This will be his first experience of working in the south and east of the County but he is relishing the task. The new Bishop brings wide experience of ministry, vocations, training and education. He will be the sponsoring bishop for ordination in the Diocese and will take the lead on education. He said: “I am very positive and excited by the developing diocesan vision for growth and the development of lay and ordained ministries that are able to respond to the changing demands and opportunities of our communities. I have a real passion for enabling the church, at all levels, to engage with those parts of society that we have little contact with or perhaps feel uncomfortable around. “During my time in Leeds I have worked with colleagues at all levels of parish and diocesan life to help parishes focus on mission development, Pioneer ministries and Fresh Expressions. I am a great believer in the development of lay ministry alongside increasingly diverse models of ordained and pioneer ministry,” he said. “I look forward to getting to know the people of South and East Yorkshire and the wider diocese better over the next few months and to working with Bishop Steven.” Peter said that he relaxes by doing many of the things which everyone enjoys (reading, walking etc) but he would count cooking Indian food, hospitality and Motor Racing amongst his favourite interests and he likes to watch the odd game of Rugby League. He also enjoys city breaks, exploring new cities and enjoying their culture and history. Peter will be consecrated as a Bishop in York Minster on 2 February and welcome services are being planned in Sheffield Cathedral (5 February) and in Doncaster Minster (11 February). 7 Dear Theophilus… You’ll no doubt remember Zacchaeus, the little (or should I say ‘vertically challenged’) and fraudulent tax collector from Jericho who wanted to catch a glimpse of Jesus as he passed through his home town.
