Prof. Satyajit Mayor got prestigious Chevalier De L’ordre National Du Mérite Prof. Satyajit Mayor, Director of the National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS-TIFR) was conferred the distinguished Chevalier de l’Ordre national du Mérite, French order of merit by the Ambassador of France to India, Mr. H. E. Emmanuel Lenain on 19th November, 2019. Prof. Satyajit Mayor with Mr. H. E. Emmanuel Lenain, the Ambassador of France to India, Prof. Mayor is professor and director of the National Centre for Biological Science (NCBS), Bangalore, and Institute for Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine (inStem), Bangalore, India. In 2012, Prof. Mayor won the Infosys Prize for life sciences for his research on regulated cell surface organization and membrane dynamics. He studied chemistry at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Bombay and has earned his Ph.D. in life sciences from The Rockefeller University, New York. He developed tools to study the trafficking of membrane lipids and GPI- anchored proteins in mammalian cells using quantitative fluorescence microscopy during his post-doctoral research at Columbia University. Prof. Mayor has to his credit some of the prestigious national and international awards. Few of the awards and fellowships include Foreign Associate to US National Academy of Sciences, EMBO Fellow, TWAS Prize in Biology, JC Bose Fellowship, CSIR-Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award, Swarnajayanti Fellowship, Wellcome Trust International Senior Research Fellowship, Mizutani Foundation for Glycoscience Award, Helen Hays Whitney Post-Doctoral Fellowship, etc. The prestigious Chevalier de l’Ordre national du Mérite award reflects Prof. Mayor’s extensive efforts in supporting Indo-French scientific collaborations. -

VALE1 AND KAREN DELL2 India is gearing up to become an international player in the life sciences, powered by its recent economic growth and a desire to add biotechnology to its portfolio. In this article, we present the history, current state, and projected future growth of biological research in India. To fulfi ll its aspirations, India’s greatest challenge will be in educating, recruiting, and supporting its next generation of scientists. Obaid Siddiqi, Fellow of the Royal Society, Member US National Academy of Sciences, ex-President of the Indian Academy of Sciences, National Research Professor at NCBS (TIFR), passed away tragically in a freak accident on 26 July 2013. ‘Obaid’, as he was called by many, was the chief architect and founder of NCBS. We deeply mourn a creative scientist, a self-effacing and visionary institution builder, and a genuine humanist. Obaid has left us an example that will be hard to follow. However collectively, I believe that we can create a special place here at NCBS, that Obaid would be proud to claim as his vision. 4 • Director’s note • Satyajit Mayor NCBS.indd 4 04/01/14 12:13 PM If Obaid’s passing was not a sufficient jolt, the year had already begun ominously; in January, K. VijayRaghavan, Director, NCBS went missing. Raman with the main objective of promoting the progress and upholding the cause of science (both pure and applied). It was registered as a Society under the Societies Registration Act on 24 April 1934. It commenced functioning with 65 fellows. Its formal inauguration took place on 31 July 1934 at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. On the afternoon of that day its first general meeting of Fellows was held at which C.V. Raman was elected its President and the draft constitution of the Academy was approved and adopted. The first issue of its proceedings was published in July 1934. The present report covering the period April 2001 to March 2002 represents the sixty-eighth year of the Academy since its founding. -

It is indeed an honour. Of course this is acknowledgement of our collective work and not just mine. It is a recognition of the members of my laboratory past and present, and my close collaborators Madan, and Ram (Vishwakarma). I could not have achieved this without the involvement of all of these wonderful people. Prof Satyajit Mayor’s research uses multi-disciplinary approach combining cell biology with physics 1 / 3 www.biovoicenews.com and chemistry to understand the molecular mechanisms of endocytosis in metazoan cells and to study this phenomenon at many scales. At the molecular scale his group aims to uncover the molecular players in endocytic processes; at the mesoscopic scale research in his laboratory attempts to provide a physical description of cell membrane structure and organization process and its material properties; at the cellular scale the work is aimed at synthesising a role for endocytosis in cellular signalling and cell surface homeostasis; at the scale of the tissue the group wishes to determine how control of endocytosis impinges on many developmental programs in tissue morphogenesis. -

OUTCOME ANALYSIS OF RESEARCH PROJECTS COMPLETED DURING 2011 to 2015 UNDER COLLABORATIVE SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH PROGRAMME INDO-FRENCH CENTRE FOR THE CENTRE FRANCO-INDIEN POUR LA PROMOTION OF ADVANCED RESEARCH PROMOTION DE LA RECHERCHE (IFCPAR) AVANCEE (CEFIPRA) FOREWORD FROM THE DIRECTOR It gives me immense pleasure to present this report which contains the outcome analysis of the projects completed during 2011 to 2015 under the Collaborative Scientific Research Programme of CEFIPRA. It is a key programme which has been instrumental in supporting basic and applied research between India and France in advanced areas of Science & Technology. This programme has significant impact in promoting collaborative research in both countries. The joint publications emerged from the CEFIPRA supported projects under this programme covers the ten major thrust areas and contributed to strengthen the research activities between the two countries. The evaluation of this programme indicates that it has played a major role in linking scientists and the research institutions of both countries and contributing towards development of skill in young researchers. The successful completion of ninety four projects during the period of five years, 2011 to 2015 has indicated growth in developing knowledge base of scientific community of both countries and addressing research challenges, areas of global concerns and finding solutions. A short summary of significant achievements is given in Annexure-I. I hope that the information provided in this report will be beneficial for the administrators and policy makers of both countries in shaping future interventional policies in line with Collaborative Scientific Research Programme of the Centre which is contributing in strengthening Indo-French collaboration.
