Naci ONUS1 Mehmet BİLGEN2 1Akdeniz University Faculty of Agriculture Department of Horticulture, 07059 Antalya, Turkey 2Akdeniz University Faculty of Agriculture Department of Field Crops, 07059 Antalya, Turkey Correspondence addressed E-mail: [email protected] Abstract In this study using the chloroplast matK DNA sequence, a chloroplast-encoded locus that has been shown to be much more variable than many other genes, from one hundred and forty two plant species belong to the families of 26 plants we conducted a study to contribute to the understanding of major evolutionary relationships among the studied plant orders, families genus and species (clades) and discussed the utilization of matK for molecular phylogeny. Determined genetic relationship between the species or genera is very valuable for genetic improvement studies. The chloroplast matK gene sequences ranging from 730 to 1545 nucleotides were downloaded from the GenBank database. These DNA sequences were aligned using Clustal W program. We employed the maximum parsimony method for phylogenetic reconstruction using PAUP* program. Trees resulting from the parsimony analyses were similar to those generated earlier using single or multiple gene analyses, but our analyses resulted in strict consensus tree providing much better resolution of relationships among major clades. We found that gymnosperms (Pinus thunbergii, Pinus attenuata and Ginko biloba) were different from the monocotyledons and dicotyledons. We showed that Cynodon dactylon, Panicum capilare, Zea mays and Saccharum officiarum (all are in the C4 metabolism) were improved from a common ancestors while the other cereals Triticum Avena, Hordeum, Oryza and Phalaris were evolved from another or similar ancestors. -

It was found that the herbarium contains a large and varied number of plants from different parts of Iraq and in different and varied environments. It was collected and arranged according to a specific system in the herbarium to remain an important source for all graduate students and researchers to take advantage of these plants. Also, the flowering and fruiting periods of these plants in Iraq were recorded for different regions. Most of these plants begin to flower in the spring and thrive in fields and farms. The distribution of fabaceae family was variety especially in cold mountainous regions for Europe, Asia and North America, It is also abundant in Central Asia and is characterized by great economic importance. -

The list also provides standardized acronyms for each taxon and information on nativity, physiognomy, and wetness ratings. Annotated comments for selected taxa provide taxonomic, floristic, and ecological information, particularly for taxa not recognized in recent treatments of the Missouri flora. Synonymy crosswalks are provided for three references commonly used in Missouri. A discussion of the concept and application of Floristic Quality Assessment is presented. To accurately reflect ecological and taxonomic relationships, new combinations are validated for two distinct taxa, Dichanthelium ashei and D. werneri , and problems in application of infraspecific taxon names within Quercus shumardii are clarified. As the development and use of steamboats along the Mississippi River increased, travel on the Trace diminished and the route began to be reclaimed by nature. A renewed interest in the Trace began during, and following, the Great Depression. In the early 1930’s, then Mississippi congressman T. J. Busby promoted interest in the Trace from a historical perspective and also as an opportunity for employment in the area. Legislation was introduced by Busby to conduct a survey of the Trace and in 1936 actual construction of the modern roadway began. Development of the present Natchez Trace Parkway (NATR) which follows portions of the original route has continued since that time. The last segment of the NATR was completed in 2005. The federal lands that comprise the modern route total about 52,000 acres in 25 counties through the states of Alabama, Mississippi, and Tennessee. The route, about 445 miles long, is a manicured parkway with numerous associated rest stops, parks, and monuments. Current land use along the NATR includes upland forest, mesic prairie, wetland prairie, forested wetlands, interspersed with numerous small agricultural croplands. -

The case of a constructed wetland in a 1 2 Mediterranean urban context 3 4 Abstract 5 6 7 Constructed wetlands (CW) are considered a successful tool to treat wastewater in many countries: 8 9 5 their success is mainly assessed observing the rate of pollution reduction, but CW can also 10 11 contribute to the conservation of ecosystem services. Among the many ecosystem services 12 13 provided, the biodiversity of constructed wetlands has received less attention. 14 The EcoSistema Filtro (ESF) of the Molentargius-Saline Regional Natural Park is a constructed 15 16 wetland situated in Sardinia (Italy), built to filter treated wastewater, increase habitat diversity and 17 18 10 enhance local biodiversity. A floristic survey has been carried out yearly one year after the 19 20 construction of the artificial ecosystem in 2004, observing the modification of the vascular flora 21 22 composition in time. The flora of the ESF accounted for 54% of the whole Regional Park’s flora; 23 alien species amount to 12%, taxa of conservation concern are 6%. Comparing the data in the years, 24 25 except for the biennium 2006/2007, we observed a continuous increase of species richness, together 26 27 15 with an increase of endemics, species of conservation concern and alien species too. Once the 28 29 endemics appeared, they remained part of the flora, showing a good persistence in the artificial 30 31 wetland. -

Hoagland Oklahoma Biological Survey Department of Geography and Environmental Sustainability University of Oklahoma Norman, OK 73019 ABSTRACT This paper reports the results of a vascular plant inventory at The Nature Conservancy's Oka' Yanahli Preserve in Johnston County, Oklahoma. A total of 645 taxa in 109 families were collected. Three-hundred and ninety genera, 602 species, and 43 infraspecific taxa were identified. The families with the largest number of taxa were the Asteraceae with 91 taxa and the Poaceae with 89 taxa. Ninety non-native or naturalized taxa—14.0% of the preserve's flora—were found. Nine taxa tracked by the Oklahoma Natural Heritage Inventory were present. Nine vegetation types occurred at the preserve. Extensive surveys were conducted to document the species in each season and identification was done with the help of regional floras. A total of 191 species comprising 181 species of angiosperms (176 genera and 76 families), 2 species of pteridophytes (2 genera and 1 family), and 8 species of gymnosperms (7 genera and 5 families) were observed. The dominant Angiosperms families include Asteraceae (18 genera and 18 species), followed by Fabaceae (16 genera and 18 species), Lamiaceae (8 genera and 9 species), Solanaceae (5 genera and 9 species), Amaranthaceae (7 genera and 8 species), Euphorbiaceae (4 genera and 8 species) and Apocynaceae (6 genera and 7 species). -
