Since I’ll be in the Crisis room with my good friend and co-director Payton Tysinger, you’ll be interacting primarily with Chair Taylor Gosk and co-chair Vinayak Grover. Taylor is a sophomore as well, and she is majoring in Public Policy and Environmental Studies. I have her to thank for teaching me that Starbucks will, in fact, fill up my thermos with their delightfully bitter coffee.     Moscow’s Sun Yat-sen University On 12 March 1925, Sun Yat-sen, pioneer of the Chinese Revolution, died in Beijing, leaving China and the Chinese people in turmoil. Just before dying, he signed a number of documents. The best-known were his testament, drafted by Wang Jingwei, and a letter to the Central Executive of the Soviet Socialist Republic, drafted by Eugene Chen. The letter read: Dear Comrades, I have firm confidence in the reliable support you have given my country to this day. In bidding you farewell, dear comrades, allow me to express the hope that the day will soon come when the Soviet Union will be able to greet a friend and ally in the shape of a powerful and free China, and that the two united countries will march hand in hand in the great strug- gle for the emancipation of the oppressed peoples of the world. I leave behind a Party that, as has always been my wish, will be bound with you in the historic work of the final liberation from the imperialist order of China and other exploited nations. By the will of fate, I must leave my work unfinished and hand it over to those who, remaining true to the Party’s principles and teachings, will show themselves to be my true followers. Sun Yat-sen This was Soviet Russia and the Chinese revolutionaries’ honeymoon period. However, the love-affair went through difficult times. In July 1912, after the 1911 Revolution, Lenin read Sun Yat-sen’s ‘On the Social Meaning of the Chinese Revolution’ and wrote ‘Democracy and Narodnism in China’, in which he expressed infinite respect for Sun and China in the wake of the Revolution: In China, the Asiatic provisional President of the Republic is a revolu- tionary democrat, endowed with the nobility and heroism of a class that is rising, not declining, a class that does not dread the future, but believes in it and fights for it selflessly, a class that does not cling to main- tenance and restoration of the past to safeguard its privileges, but hates the past and knows how to cast off its dead and stifling decay.

A gong sounds as the camera fixes on an empty stage set with an arched footbridge and blossoming tree branch. Dai Ailian emerges dressed in a folkloric costume of red balloon pants and a rose-colored silk jacket, a ring of red flowers in her hair and shoes topped with red pom-poms. Puppetlike, two false legs kick out from under the back of Dai’s jacket, while the false torso and head of an old man hunch forward in front of her chest, creating the illusion of two characters: an old man carrying his young wife on his back. This dance is Dai’s adaptation of “The Mute Carries the Cripple” (Yazi bei feng), a comic sketch performed in several regional variations of xiqu, or Chinese traditional theater (video 1). This particular version is derived from Gui opera(Guiju), a type of xiqu specific to Guangxi Autonomous Region in south China. Dai demonstrates her dance skill by isolating her upper body and lower body, so that her pelvis and legs convincingly portray the movements of an old man while her torso, arms, and head those of a young woman. As the man, Dai takes wide sweeping steps, kicking, squatting, and balancing with her feet flexed and knees bent between steps, occa- sionally lurching forward as if struggling to balance under the weight of the female rider. As the woman, Dai grips the old husband’s shoulders with one hand while she lets her head bob from side to side, her eyes sparkling as she uses her free hand to twirl a fan, point to things in her environment, and dab the old man’s forehead with a handkerchief.

    Engaging with Socialism in China: The Political Thought and Activities of Chen Gongbo and Tan Pingshan, 1917-1928 Xuduo Zhao PhD University of York History May 2019 1 Abstract This thesis investigates Chen Gongbo (1892-1946) and Tan Pingshan (1886-1956), two significant Cantonese Marxists who helped found the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) in 1921. I use Chen and Tan as a lens to re-examine the dissemination of Marxism in May Fourth China and the underlying tensions in 1920s Chinese revolution. My study demonstrates that it was in the changing educational system in the early 20th century that Chen and Tan gradually improved their positions in the cultural field and participated in the intellectual ferment during the May Fourth period. At Peking University they became familiarised with Marxism. Their understanding of Marxism, however, was deeply influenced by European social democracy, as opposed to many other early communist leaders who believed in Bolshevism. This divergence finally led to the open conflict within the CCP between Guangzhou and Shanghai in the summer of 1922, which also embodied the different social identities among early Chinese Marxists. After the quarrel, Chen quit while Tan remained within the party. During the Nationalist Revolution, both Tan and Chen became senior leaders in the Kuomintang, but they had to face yet another identity crisis of whether to be a revolutionary or a politician. Meanwhile, they had to rethink the relationship between socialism and nationalism in their political propositions. This study of Chen and Tan’s political thought and activities in the late 1910s and 1920s offers a different picture of Chinese radicalism and revolution in the early Republican period.

The foreigners’ rights to live, preach, work and trade in China extracted by the ‘unequal treaties’ in the nineteenth century were challenged by an increasingly powerful nationalist movement, led by the Kuomintang, which was bolstered by Soviet support. The Chinese began a major attack on British interests in June 1925 in South China and continued the attack as the Kuomintang marched upward to the Yangtze River, where much of British trade was centred.

The relationship between the commu- nities was often tense, aggravated perhaps by the infamously bad weather— hot and steamy in the summer, cold and clammy in the winter. Yet the metropolis we now call Wuhan dominated the economic and political life of the central Yangzi River region for well over a millennium. Twentieth-century Wuhan’s economic center was the bustling port of Hankou, whose pursuit of Western-style commercial and cultural moder- nity rose to a new level after it became a railroad terminus early in the century. Across the Yangzi River, Wuchang, while clinging to the urban morphology of the traditional administrative capital, led the search for political identity: in 1911–12, 1927, and 1938 it thrust Wuhan onto the center stage of national politics. The tension between the crass commer- cial modernity of Hankou and the fervent political posturing of Wuchang gave twentieth-century Wuhan a split personality that is still evident to- day in differences in local dialect, culture, and architecture. Caught in the middle was a smaller, working-class third city, the down-to-earth in- dustrial center of Hanyang.

Phoebe Chow 3 Abstract Public opinion in Britain influenced the government’s policy of retreat in response to Chinese nationalism in the 1920s. The foreigners’ rights to live, preach, work and trade in China extracted by the ‘unequal treaties’ in the nineteenth century were challenged by an increasingly powerful nationalist movement, led by the Kuomintang, which was bolstered by Soviet support. The Chinese began a major attack on British interests in June 1925 in South China and continued the attack as the Kuomintang marched upward to the Yangtze River, where much of British trade was centred.
