IRONIC FEMINISM: RHETORICAL CRITIQUE IN SATIRICAL NEWS A Dissertation Presented to the Graduate School of Clemson University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy Rhetorics, Communication, and Information Design by Kathy Elrick December 2016 Accepted by Dr. David Blakesley, Committee Chair Dr. Jeff Love Dr. Brandon Turner Dr. Victor J. Vitanza ABSTRACT Ironic Feminism: Rhetorical Critique in Satirical News aims to offer another perspective and style toward feminist theories of public discourse through satire. This study develops a model of ironist feminism to approach limitations of hegemonic language for women and minorities in U.S. public discourse. The model is built upon irony as a mode of perspective, and as a function in language, to ferret out and address political norms in dominant language. In comedy and satire, irony subverts dominant language for a laugh; concepts of irony and its relation to comedy situate the study’s focus on rhetorical contributions in joke telling. How are jokes crafted? Who crafts them? What is the motivation behind crafting them? To expand upon these questions, the study analyzes examples of a select group of popular U.S.

ABSTRACT A Polysemic Exploration of Stereotypes and Racial Humor in Tosh.0 Benjamin K. Murray, M.A. Mentor: Mia Moody-Ramirez, Ph.D. This case study uses content and rhetorical analyses to address the neutralizing effects of performance strategies used in the racially charged humor of “Tosh.0.” Selected clips were analyzed and discussed through the lens of Ambivalence Theory, which supports the idea that multiple meanings are possible and probable in comedic content due to the incongruous nature of humorous discourses. The researcher viewed multiple clips of the show and coded them based on stereotype, humor theory and performance strategy. Findings indicate that Tosh.0 employs racial stereotypes unequally throughout the show with the greatest amount of negative stereotypes aimed at Blacks. Daniel Tosh also utilized Superiority Theory most frequently with his jokes and depended heavily on “Distance and Disclaimer” methods to avoid accusations of racism. A content analysis of specific clips highlights the polysemic nature of the humor in Tosh.0, meaning that interpretations differ based on the inherent views of the person watching. • Laughing Against Patriarchy: Humor, Silence, and Feminist Resistance
1 Laughing against Patriarchy: Humor, Silence, and Feminist Resistance Amy Billingsley One of the major concerns of Feminist Theory is the way in which women’s ability to speak gets silenced, both in relation to sexist situations and to the way in which discourse itself is constructed. Some examples include Catherine MacKinnon's concern about the systematic silence of sexual harassment,1 Deirdre Davis’ concern about silencing through street harassment,2 and Luce Irigaray’s3 and Monique Wittig’s4 concerns about the silence caused by the construction of discourse itself. Humor often reinforces silence, trivializing climates of sexism5 and the act of pointing out the existence of patriarchal structures in society.6 However, it also has been gestured to as a means of breaking silence and as coinciding with the self- articulation of women on their own terms.7 What is the difference between silencing humor and humor that breaks silence? And what would it look like for humor to serve as a practice of feminist resistance? In this essay, I will argue that humor is a promising method of feminist resistance, allowing women to shift oppressive scripts of discourse that discourage women from speaking to a context where women can speak on their own terms. First, I will explain the role of humor in silencing women, referring to both Rousseau's writings on laughing at rape and contemporary discussions of jokes about rape in stand-up comedy which frame feminist resistance as humorless. Then I will look at theories of laughter and resistance, arguing that Cixous and Irigaray’s endorsement of laughter can be made more specific through Wittig's emphasis on discursive war machines.

  • Evolution of Rape Jokes
Journal of Xi'an University of Architecture & Technology Issn No : 1006-7930 Evolution of Rape Jokes Shyam Hajare M.A. English with Communication Studies (2nd Year) Christ (Deemed to be) University [email protected] Abstract Rape jokes have been one of the perennial topics in the comedy industry, but what the term means has changed a lot in the past two decades. Various comics have come to the realization that this is a sensitive topic and thus have slowly tried to change their approach towards it. Along with rising concern about the issue of sexual harassment, the #MeToo movement has kind of given rise to the feminist movement in the comedy industry. This paper through the phenomenological study of the changes tries to understand how these jokes have evolved and what does that say about how the women are seen in the society as well as about the consciousness about sexual violence. The comics like Sarah Silverman, Hannah Gadsby, and others are using different ways to fight against the rape culture. The recent stand-up special by Cameron Esposito, titled Rape Jokes is the type of approach to the topic which uses the perspective of the survivor to talk about the topic. The changes show that it is all up to the comedian to tell jokes that are funny but still makes a point and if done properly can be a platform for survivors of harassment to share their stories and stand like a wall against the rape culture. Keywords: Rape jokes, Comedy, Cameron Esposito, Hannah Gadsby, Sarah Silverman.

The Tim Ferriss Show Transcripts Episode 84: Whitney Cummings Show notes and links at tim.blog/podcast Tim Ferriss: Hello, my dangerous, dainty friends. This is Tim Ferriss, and this is another episode of the Tim Ferriss Show where I try my best to deconstruct excellence in world class performers. That means interviewing people who are the best at what they do, or one of the best at what they do, whether they’re investors or chess prodigies, actors, athletes, everyone and anyone who fits the bill of top performer. I will try to dig into the habits, the routines, the favorite books, the meals, the meal timing, their sleep habits, meditation techniques and so on and so forth to provide you with recipes that you can test. So not a whole bunch of highfalutin, abstract concepts, although we explore some deep stuff, but the really tactical tools that you can implement on a daily, weekly basis to become better at what you do or want to do. And this episode is no exception. We have Whitney Cummings. Whitney is hilarious. Whitney is a Los Angeles based comedian, actor, writer and producer. She’s a multi hyphenate, and let me rattle off just a few things. She’s executive producer and, along with Michael Patrick King, co-creator of the Emmy nominated CBS comedy, Two Broke Girls; not two broke curls, heard a lot of Ks, Two Broke Girls. You’ve probably seen it, heard of it, observed the advertisements for it; it’s all over the place, which was recently picked up for a fifth season.
