  • Alien: Covenant, Dir. by Ridley Scott (Twentieth Century Fox, 2017)
The Irish Journal of Gothic and Horror Studies 17 (Autumn 2018) Alien: Covenant, dir. by Ridley Scott (Twentieth Century Fox, 2017) Alien: Covenant is the sixth instalment in the much-celebrated and critically acclaimed science-fiction/horror saga initiated in 1979 by Ridley Scott’s Alien and consisting also of James Cameron’s Aliens (1986), David Fincher’s Alien³ (1992), Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s Alien: Resurrection (1997) and the prequel film Prometheus (Scott, 2012).1 Alien: Covenant is also the twenty-fourth work by the eclectic eighty-year-old British producer and director, whose work has successfully spanned all cinematic genres, from science fiction (Blade Runner, 1982), through costume and historical drama (1492: Conquest of Paradise, 1992, and Kingdom of Heaven, 2005) and fantasy (Legend, 1985), to the detective film (Black Rain, 1989), the road movie (Thelma and Louise, 1991) and comedy (A Good Year, 2006). Covenant is a sequel to Prometheus; the earlier film depicts the search for the origins of the human species by a group of scientists, explorers, and the leading members of the Weyland Corporation, tracing their encounter with a being belonging to the race of the so- called Engineers. In Prometheus, the explorers discover near the end of the film that the last surviving Engineer had been frozen into hyper-sleep thousands of years earlier, preventing him from destroying Earth, a mission that he fortunately does not complete upon awakening. Prometheus is filled with references to religion, specifically Christian beliefs (allegedly, the Engineers’ mission to destroy our planet was ordered around the time of Christ’s death), the creation of life (the protagonist is sterile, but she gives birth to an alien life form), and, in a nod to Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein (1818), the horror of a creator refusing his own progeny.

  • You've Seen the Movie, Now Play The
“YOU’VE SEEN THE MOVIE, NOW PLAY THE VIDEO GAME”: RECODING THE CINEMATIC IN DIGITAL MEDIA AND VIRTUAL CULTURE Stefan Hall A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2011 Committee: Ronald Shields, Advisor Margaret M. Yacobucci Graduate Faculty Representative Donald Callen Lisa Alexander © 2011 Stefan Hall All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Ronald Shields, Advisor Although seen as an emergent area of study, the history of video games shows that the medium has had a longevity that speaks to its status as a major cultural force, not only within American society but also globally. Much of video game production has been influenced by cinema, and perhaps nowhere is this seen more directly than in the topic of games based on movies. Functioning as franchise expansion, spaces for play, and story development, film-to-game translations have been a significant component of video game titles since the early days of the medium. As the technological possibilities of hardware development continued in both the film and video game industries, issues of media convergence and divergence between film and video games have grown in importance. This dissertation looks at the ways that this connection was established and has changed by looking at the relationship between film and video games in terms of economics, aesthetics, and narrative. Beginning in the 1970s, or roughly at the time of the second generation of home gaming consoles, and continuing to the release of the most recent consoles in 2005, it traces major areas of intersection between films and video games by identifying key titles and companies to consider both how and why the prevalence of video games has happened and continues to grow in power.

Green 1 “She Has To Be Controlled” Exploring the Action Heroine in Contemporary Science Fiction Cinema Doctor of Philosophy in English Caroline A. Green 2010 Green 2 “She Has to be Controlled”: Exploring the Action Heroine in Contemporary Science Fiction Cinema Submitted by Caroline Ann Green to the University of Exeter as a thesis for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English in April 2010. I certify that all material in this thesis which is not my own work has been identified and that no material has previously been submitted and approved for the award of a degree by this or any other University Signature .................................................. Green 3 Abstract In this dissertation I explore a number of contemporary science fiction franchises in order to ascertain how the figure of the action heroine has evolved throughout her recent history. There has been a tendency in film criticism to view these strong women as „figuratively male‟ and therefore not „really‟ women, which, I argue, is largely due to a reliance on the psychoanalytic paradigms that have dominated feminist film theory since its beginnings. Building on Elisabeth Hills‟s work on the character of Ellen Ripley of the Alien series, I explore how notions of „becoming‟ and the „Body without Organs‟ proposed by Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari can be activated to provide a more positive set of readings of active women on screen. These readings are not limited by discussions of sex or gender, but discuss the body in terms of its increased capacities as it interacts with the world around it.

The 2012 killing, some assert persuasively the “murder,” of Trayvon Martin spurred actions by a group naming itself the Dream Defenders to demand the arrest of George Zimmerman and the firing of the Sanford Police Chief (McLain 19-20). The July 13, 2013 acquittal of Zimmerman led Alicia Garza and Patrisse Cullors to create the Black Lives Matter movement through social media as Garza’s expression “Black people, I love you. I love us. Our lives matter” went viral with Cullors’ hashtag (Altman 118). The British newspaper, The Guardian’s “The Counted” crowd sourced database found that United States police killed 1,146 persons in the year 2015, with Blacks two times more likely than whites to be killed by the police. Law Professor Cynthia Lee notes that “Blacks and Latinos constitute only thirty percent of the United States population but make up fifty-six percent of the inmates in prisons and jails across the country (Lee 482).” Nelson notes the historical disre- gard of the bodies and health of Blacks, minorities, and the poor through- out history, and Rickfort documents the Black Lives Matter movement’s 38876 esr_37 & 38 Sheet No.

THE HORRIFIC “MOTHER/ MONSTER” AND THE SPACES BETWEEN IN RIDLEY SCOTT'S ALIEN AND JAMES CAMERON'S ALIENS by TERRI NICHOLSON Under the Direction of Calvin Thomas ABSTRACT Despite the wealth of scholarship on the films in the Alien series, the first two films connect the most to the universe created in the original film and effectively complete the primary narrative arc for the series hero, Ellen Ripley. A preponderance of the research offered on the Alien film series focuses on Ripley, the iconic xenomorphs, and their Alien Queen. However, I also explore the roles of other liminal characters in the films, such as synthetic humans Ash and Bishop. Addressing the recurring motifs in the films, I discuss the sliding signifier of "mother" and track how the signifier “child” undergoes many other interesting distinctions.

  • The Alien Anthology
Berklee College of Music – Valencia Campus THE ALIEN ANTHOLOGY THE SOUND OF A SAGA by Félix Carcone Master of Music: Scoring for Film, Television and Video Games - candidate 2014/2015 Carcone 2 This work is dedicated to the memory of James Horner. I was writing the end of this paper when the tragic event happened. I want to say that this great man gave me, at my earliest childhood, my first musical skill, and the most important of all: the sensibility. Carcone 3 PREFACE As far as I can remember, the first time I saw the cover of the Alien videotape, I immediately though: this thing might be dangerous. I was around 8 or 9 years old, and a strange combination of fear and attraction came to me. This weird egg, appearing to come from somewhere else, scared me. But this simple jacket was extremely implicit; it raised your curiosity without being aware of. Besides my fear, I wanted to watch this thing; I wanted to enter and discover this strange world. Many years later, when I could see the film, I loved it from the first time. I was shocked by some images, but the impression that marked my brain was extremely good. I had a strange feeling, like those when we have lived a very special experience. I didn’t consider the movie as a science-fiction work, nor as a horror adventure, I really lived the moment from the artistic and claustrophobic approach. It was horror, without any doubts, but it was radically different from all the other movies of the genre I watched before.
