South Pacific Commission 639.2'9585 AACR2 ISBN 982-203-511-X Prepared for publication and printed at South Pacific Commission headquarters Noumea, New Caledonia, 1996 ii SUMMARY The waters of Papua New Guinea, including the archipelagic waters of the New Guinea Islands Region, harbour a rich tuna resource that has not been exploited commercially by longline vessels for almost a decade. In the latter part of 1991, Government and private-sector interests in the New Guinea Islands Region began exploring the possibility of establishing a domestic tuna longline industry. As part of this effort the PNG Islands Region Secretariat and the East New Britain (ENB) Provincial Government sought the assistance of staff from the South Pacific Commission’s Coastal Fisheries Programme to design a tuna fisheries development strategy, and to secure the technical and financial assistance necessary to initiate such a programme.

The PNG Air name reflects the new concentration and identity of the business after it became majority owned by major PNG institutions and more heavily focused on the domestic regular passenger transport (RPT) market. As PNG’s next generation airline, we’re proud of our role connecting people throughout our country. Through the many miles we fly, we want to be with you every step of the way, whether it’s in business, friendship or family life, we understand how important connections are as we continue to take pride in serving the people and this beautiful Nation of Papua New Guinea. We do this by flying to more places with the newest aircraft in PNG. We’re growing our ATR 72-600 fleet to connect Papua New Guinea in the biggest cities and towns, and also in the smallest villages. This will open up new opportunities, and a newer, brighter, stronger future for all Papua New Guineans.

  • MOUNT HAGEN SHOW ROAD EXCURSION 12 – 23 AUGUST 2020 Ph 1300 36 88 55| PNG Holidays, P.O. Box 1105, Cairns North, Queensland, A
MOUNT HAGEN SHOW ROAD EXCURSION 12 – 23 AUGUST 2020 5 nights’ Mt Hagen, 2 nights’ Goroka, 2 nights’ Madang, 2 nights Sepik, escorted small group tour for independent travellers with guide and half board. TOUR INFORMATION This eleven night escorted tour program is designed for independent solo travellers and couples requiring shared, managed arrangements for attending the Mt Hagen Show (also incorrectly called the Mt Hagen Festival) and seeing some more of the mainland New Guinea countryside after. The tour offers a selection of accommodation options at Mt Hagen – subject to availability at the time of booking – and comfortable tourist hotels in the other towns. In Mt Hagen there are organised excursions to the Show, the Paiya Sing-sing and other attractions. In the other towns there will be a variety of excursions to villages and other cultural and nature sites. During the tour you will share a bus, guide and attraction seating or walking with others in the tour group, but in the evenings there are options to dine alone and have time to yourself if you wish. The Mt Hagen Show is Papua New Guinea’s largest cultural extravaganza. The Show has its origins in colonial days when colonial administrators sought to reduce tribal fighting by promoting inter-marriage and channelling inter-tribal rivalry into positive forms of competition. Major sing-sing events like the Mt Hagen Show and Goroka Show became opportunities for tribes to gain status without bloodshed, by competing to put on the best cultural performance. The Mt Hagen Show today is still a competition, with tribal groups vying for sizeable cash prizes and of course the honour and glory that first prize at the “Hagen Show” brings to one’s tribe.

Japanese ODA Loan Ex-Ante Evaluation (for Japanese ODA Loan) 1. Name of the Project Country: Independent State of Papua New Guinea Project: Nadzab Airport Redevelopment Project Loan Agreement: October 14, 2015 Loan amount: 26,942 million yen Borrower: Government of the Independent State of Papua New Guinea 2. Background and Necessity of the Project (1) Current State and Issues of the Aviation Sector in Papua New Guinea The air transport plays its vital role in transportation of people in Papua New Guinea since the country is comprised of over 600 small and large islands, the Island of New Guinea, where the country’s capital, Lae, and other major cities are located, has 3,000-meter mountains, and more than 80% of the entire population (7.3 million) lives in rural areas. The project site, Lae City, has the second largest population (about 120,000) following the country’s capital, Port Moresby, and serves as a collection point for crops harvested in Morobe Province and the Highland area. As Lae City is home to the Port of Lae, that boasts the country’s largest volume of cargo, and is connected to the Highland area where a number of natural resource development projects are taking place, it functions as a base of local industry and distribution. The Nadzab Airport (Runway length: 2,438 m) located on the outskirts of the Lae City, handles the country’s second-largest number of domestic passengers and serves as a domestic hub airport for the northern area. The passenger demand over a five-year period (2008-2012) at Nadzab Airport showed high annual growth at nearly 13%.
