It (Australia) this-city takes the form of a public ‘construction site’ using nothing but thousands of cardboard boxes and the energy and ingenuity of kids and families. Guided by performers in the role of construction workers who facilitate free play, the children build cities and buildings, transforming the boxes into landscapes, each day bringing different creations. Then, during the very last performance of the season, everyone is invited to help in crushing it all into a recyclable heap of cardboard rubble. A DJ or musician plays live to underscore the action with music while performers set challenges for the children. We Built This City places children in the role of architect, empowering them to construct their ideal city, and during the performance they will make buildings go up, pull them down, redesign them, extend, walk through, jump on, and reconstruct them. We Built This City is not a play… it is play. Art Stage SAN The Fairy and the 3+ www.artstagesan.com A fairy appears in downtown! And a woodcutter is looking all over for the fairy. Now Korean traditional fairy tale - THE FAIRY AND THE (Korea) Woodcutter WOODCUTTER - can be enjoyed as a street performance with artistic puppets, accompanied by theatrical interpretations. Various objects and puppets move along the street, making a story; an automation rooster, the faces of a happy family all over the streets, a gigantic 6-meter-high string puppet, a fairy puppet that extend her sadness, deer puppets and so on. What does the celestial robe of a fairy – “wing cloth” - mean for the Fairy? It is free will that is irreplaceable for anything. Happiness is not worth having if it does not start with the free will. That’s why the fairy wanders the street to find her “wing cloth” in tears. Meanwhile, the woodcutter loves the fairy so much. Every day he looks up to heaven waiting for her and turns into a rooster. But he makes a huge mistake to steal the “wing cloth.” It is irony that he would like to give her love and happiness but it ends up with restricting her freedom and being likened to a caged bird. Deer are manipulating the woodcutter in between good and evil. What would he choose? Can she find her fairy robe? Let’s think about what freedom really means for us in today’s society through the fairy who is facing the bumpy roads for freedom and the woodcutter who is suppressing her freedom under the name of happiness. Art Stage SAN Dallae's Story 10+ 60 www.artstagesan.com “Dallae’s Story”: a story of war depicted in the eyes of an ingenuous child, which makes it all the more heart-wrenching. "Dallae's Story" is a story (Korea) of a family struggling in times of war. This story of war through the eyes of innocent "Dallae" is, ironically, a fantasy like a fairy tale. Washed blankets that are reminiscent of the past are hung over on the simple stage. In the springtime, Dallae went out to see blossoming flowers, in the summertime, she went out with dad for fishing, in the autumn, she caught dragonflies, picked apples with mom and dad, and made a snowman in the wintertime. The four members of Dallae’s family are pleased and happy with their life. But the war broke out and her dad was drafted to the battlefield. Dallae who left alone dreams a dream. Right then, Dallae’s fantasy unfolds… While dreaming a dream with Dallae, we get to look back on the original form of reminiscence that we had forgotten in the way. “Dallae’s Story” offers the virtue of the universal yet warm perspectives on the innate value in life that can draw a sense of sympathy beyond generations and borders. Based on the story of the Korean War in the 1950s, this piece is not directly about the war itself, but illustrates the earnest attempts of a family to overcome all kinds of hardships. International collaboration Jayu-Madang Andersen Project - 10+ 60 www.artstagesan.com “Andersen Project—The Nightingale”, a highlight of “Danish Focus” during the 21st ASSITEJ Korea Int’l Summer Festival in 2014, is the first (Korea/DK) Nightingale attempt to collaborate between Korean creative staffs and performers with Danish artists, and was premiered at the Festival. The well-known fairy- tale The Nightingale by Hans Christian Andersen was produced as a collaboration performance between a Danish director, a Danish set designer, a Korean composer and Korean actors. The Emperor of China learns that one of the most beautiful things in his empire is the song of the nightingale. When he orders the nightingale brought to him, a kitchen maid (the only one at court who knows of its whereabouts) leads the court to a nearby forest where the bird is found. The nightingale agrees to appear at court. The Emperor is so delighted with the bird's song that he keeps the nightingale in captivity. When the Emperor is given a bejeweled mechanical bird he loses interest in the real nightingale, who returns to the forest. The mechanical bird eventually breaks down due to overuse. The Emperor is taken deathly ill a few years later. The real nightingale learns of the Emperor's condition and returns to the palace. Death is so moved by the nightingale's song that he departs and the emperor recovers.
