After poring over the information on your website, it is clear that you people are truly unable to imagine how truly ridiculous an electric rail system is when the real needs of Santa Cruz citizens are addressed. I am sure the "right" people, including yourself, are making and will make tons of money off this boondoggle. Concentrated benefits for the few always trump the diffuse costs for the many. If there was money to be made opposing this madness, we might see a robust debate of pros and cons. Alas, the "common good" is for commoners, and commoners have little place among the august deliberations of our betters. The system works! Are you referencing that sham of a survey that was sent out by the friends of the rail trail? All questions on that survey steered the question taker toward a train. The only way to understand what the county wants is to put this to a countywide vote. In doing so you would also need to explain exactly how much this train will cost - including the prohibitive costs to redo the tracks. Who is going to pay for that? Santa Cruz County Regional Transportation Commission Transit Corridor Alternatives Analysis – Business Plan Emails received between 03/24/21 – 3/30/21 at 5pm You work for us. You are not listening to the majority of the county who want a coastal bike/walking trail. Put this to a county wide vote once and for all! I have followed the development of the rail corridor for years, perhaps decades at this point. There have been times when I was able to embrace almost every option on the spectrum including ones that put rail at the core of the development. Over time, it has become clearer and clearer to me that while there MAY be some moment in a distant future when rail would be handy, it is far more likely that other transportation options will be far better at addressing mass transit needs then, just as they are now. More importantly, waiting for such an unlikely future is folly. Enough. Build the Greenway now! We have the opportunity to create truly brilliant greenway and it is perfectly obvious that such an approach to the corridor’s development will be far less expensive, promote healthier lifestyles and will probably enjoy MORE usage than the dubious Rail-Trail development. Please embrace a plan that separates pedestrians and pets on leashes from bicycles and e-bikes so that the trail really can be a safe alternative to using a car, biking in traffic, or playing dodge ‘em on West Cliff. Please also keep these continuous rather than diverting bikes down into Capitola. While hills are a welcome part of fitness exercise, they have little place in Santa Cruz County Regional Transportation Commission Transit Corridor Alternatives Analysis – Business Plan Emails received between 03/24/21 – 3/30/21 at 5pm bike commuting and mixing cars and bikes on congested Capitola streets would just be a frustration and danger for all. Not only is the Greenway the best solution for the foreseeable future, it’s actually the only realistically affordable solution. So why are we dithering away this important opportunity for our community AND the ancillary real estate development that can come with it? On a personal side, I am so excited to see this draft plan for an electrical passenger rail. You brought me memories of how we (we in the community in Pajaro and Watsonville) obtained a petition and voted for this back in 1997, as well as had community meetings in Pajaro. We heard wonderful stories of how the passenger rail used to exist in Pajaro. Look forward to having this. Wishing you luck on your presentation. Let me know if you would like to speak in favor of this as a resident of Watsonville. Santa Cruz County Regional Transportation Commission Transit Corridor Alternatives Analysis – Business Plan Emails received between 03/24/21 – 3/30/21 at 5pm We can’t afford it and all studies show that it will be underutilized and a financial sink hole. Please build the trail and forget the train. It will be way too expensive, dangerous to pedestrians (many of which are children on bikes), and bad for the environment. I just don't see how this is even still being considered. Please do the right thing and make this for pedestrians and cyclists only. Train is never going to have any significant impact on transportation in our tiny county. You have not found funding for your plan, and the county has zero appetite for increased taxes for a train that will have no riders. Please, use common sense, abandon 19th century thinking, and give up on the plan to build a choo choo train on the corridor. Please, build an affordable multiuse trail on the corridor and rail-bank the tracks. You can do this now, making a huge impact on the wellbeing and transportation needs of our community. Thank you. RTC Commissioners must not accept the findings of the Transit Corridors Alternatives Analysis (TCAA) as currently presented. Santa Cruz County Regional Transportation Commission Transit Corridor Alternatives Analysis – Business Plan Emails received between 03/24/21 – 3/30/21 at 5pm We need to stop the ongoing million-dollar RTC studies with clearly biased conclusions. It’s time for action instead of studies. Exhibit: • Lack of public support for a train — The only large-scale gauges of public opinion (10,000+ Greenway petition signers; Measure L in Capitola; the election of Manu Koenig—with this crucial plank of his platform) show minimal if any real support for a train. • Conversely there is widespread, essentially universal support for a trail. • Complete absence of a trail-only study — While millions have been spent studying a passenger train, the RTC has never done a study focused on a trail alone.
