Page 1 Metadata - Current Taxonomy of South Australian Vascular Plants for BDBSA (accompanies the VascularPlants_BDBSA_Taxonomy.xls spreadsheet) This document describes the excel spreadsheet VascularPlants_BDBSA_Taxonomy.xls available as a download from the Biodiversity Information Management page of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Internet Website: http://www.environment.sa.gov.au/science/bio-information/how-do-i-provide.html The spreadsheet is a list of the vascular plant names that are currently deemed acceptable for entry into the Biological Databases of South Australia (BDBSA). As well as plant names accepted by the State Herbarium as current taxonomy for the Census of South Australian Vascular Plants the list also contains other allowable records for the BDBSA, for example where the full identification of a species (sp.) is not possible and only genus level can be accurately recorded (e.g. Atriplex sp.). Also, where a species has more than one subspecies (ssp.) there are records available that allow for the entry of the genus and species without having to identify to the ssp. level (e.g. Atriplex vesicaria ssp.). This list does not contain synonyms (superseded or misapplied names). To obtain a list of current plant names with their synonyms visit the Census of South Australian Plants, Algae and Fungi website [http://www.flora.sa.gov.au/census.shtml] . From the Census website you are able to print preformatted lists or produce comma separated data to load into spreadsheets etc. Data has been extracted from the FLORA database (a taxonomic reference system for Department of Environment and Natural Resources Biological Databases of SA). -

Terrestrial orchids represent a wide diversity ofspecies that are characterised by an equally diverse range of life history attributes. Threatened and endangered species of terrestrial orchids have been identifed on all continents where they occur and conservation plans have been developed for some species. Even though there is a considerable amount of information on the ecology of terrestrial orchids, few species have been studied in detail and most management plans focus on habitat conservation. In this paper, we consider the diversity of terrestrial orchids and summarise information on threatened and endangered species from a global perspective. We also describe approaches to the conservation and restoration ofterrestrial orchids and develop the argument that much information is needed ifwe are to successfully conserve this diverse group ofplant species. 1. Orchid Research Newsletter No. 75 January 2020 Editorial Orchids are perhaps not the first thing that comes to mind when we think about climate change. Record temperatures, catastrophic droughts, melting glaciers, out-of- control bush fires, burning rainforests and other calamities are of more immediate concern. But when we focus on orchid conservation, it is obvious that climate change looms large. It seems likely that orchids are more vulnerable to climate change than most other plant groups, for the following reasons: (1). Since about 70% of all orchids are epiphytes, they are probably more likely to be affected by drought. Even if mature plants would be able to survive unusually severe droughts, one can imagine that seedlings would be much more vulnerable. If such droughts become too frequent, seedling recruitment will be compromised, and the orchids will die out. (2). Since all orchids go through a mycoheterotrophic stage, at least as as seedlings, they depend on the presence of the right fungi for their long-term survival. It could be that climate change affects these fungi in such a way that they are no longer available to particular orchid species. These will then gradually disappear from their habitats. (3). Similarly, since many orchids depend on highly specific pollinators, the effect of climate change on the availability of these pollinators may be significant. A chain is only as strong as its weakest link, and we do not know if it is the orchid, the fungus or the pollinator that is the weakest link. (4). Orchids tend to occur in sparse, widely dispersed populations. -

Investigation into the Use of Molecular Methods to Distinguish between Species of Caladenia Subgenus Calonema Chutima Kongjaroon A thesis submitted in a fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy School of Engineering and Sciences Faculty of Health, Engineering and Science Victoria University Melbourne Australia 2012 Thesis abstract The phylogeny of typical spider orchid (Caladenia subgenus Calonema) is investigated for the first time. The analyses were performed using 17 RAPD and 10 ISSR primers on 30 taxa representing the three spider orchid groups (the dilatata, patersonii and reticulata groups) yielding 135 RAPD and 63 ISSR polymorphic markers. The average number of polymorphic markers produced from 17 RAPD and 10 ISSR primers were 5.12 and 4.48, respectively. 76 RAPD markers and 38 ISSR markers were polymorphic within spider orchid species. The highest number of amplified DNA fragments were produced from OPE15 (8.77 fragments) and UBC 842 (6.71 fragments) while OPF04 (2.93 fragments) and UBC 825 (3.02 fragments) gave the smallest number of amplification products. The average Dice genetic similarity of pairs of individuals within a species ranged from 0.772 to 0.939 based on RAPD and from 0.770 to 0.976 for ISSR data. The 117 spider orchid individuals analysed by RAPD, ISSR and combined data using cluster analysis were classified into three groups that correlate with those based on morphological analysis: reticulata, patersonii and dilatata. The phylogenetic analysis based on three data sets, presented relationships at the intraspecific level that were well supported by bootstrapping. However, the interspecific relationships within the groups remained unclear. -
