Introduction JOHN WHALEN-BRIDGE AND GARY STORHOFF BUDDHISM AND AMERICAN IMAGINED COMMUNITIES Postwar American writers rebelled in a variety of ways.1 Writers in the first twenty years after the war struggled against censorship laws and canons of taste, and court cases were fought about books dealing with sex in an explicit manner. Books such as Lolita and Catcher in the Rye were the site of censorship battles between librarians and church groups, not just because these books brought up sex as a subject, but also because they presented conventional tastes regarding literature, art, and morality as ridiculously provincial or as phony.2 Buddhist writers from this period such as J.D. Salinger, Gary Snyder, and Allen Ginsberg, to name some of the most famous Buddhist popularizers of the 1950s, did both. They experimented with a kind of formlessness in which the work took on the qualities of a mind supposed to be freer from delusion than those against which that mind was being defined. The Glass stories, Snyder’s mixing of Poundian translation and indigenous song, and Ginsberg’s charming and elegant yawp from the rooftop were all forms of complaint against mainstream society, which was felt to be crassly materialistic, a society of people too selfish to appreciate the literary celebration of generosity. In the words of Hettie Jones, the Beats were interested in Buddhism as an “antimaterialist point of view” that was “very attractive to those of us who © 2009 State University of New York Press, Albany 2 John Whalen-Bridge and Gary Storhoff were disaffected with the organized religion we were brought up with” (Mortenson 7). -

Trone February, 2018 POETICS OF THE WILD Abstract My thesis is about a Buddhist perspective on the global environmental crisis, including an explo- ration of how both ancient and modern poetry express a compassionate response to nature, a so- cial science survey, and a creative project of my own poetry. The exploration in the rationale pa- per suggests that looking inward may be an important way to begin to understand individual re- sponsibility for the global environmental crisis. In consideration of this is a discussion of ancient Buddhist wisdom and teachings about, and the relevance of, mindfulness, compassion, interde- pendence, and impermanence. In a creative extension of this discussion, an exploration of Bud- dhist-inspired nature poetry follows. Both ancient and modern poetics address the human condi- tion and interconnection with the planet in deep, heartfelt and insightful ways. I call this Poetics of the Wild, to describe the vast, passionate art of language that captures the wildness of nature, as well as the wildness of the creative mind in expressing our connection to it. -

PBILl Li :1'e Sketch Philip Whalen began his writing life as a poet dedicated to modernist literary techniques , later discovering his voice through experimental poetry that became increasingly influenced by his devotion to Zen Buddhism. During his early experimental phase, Whalen moved from job to job, including three summers as a fire lookout in Washington state. Even after achieving early fame through his participation in the 1955 Six Gallery reading, Whalen continued to search for spiritual meaning, making multiple trips to Japan to study Buddhism, during one of which he spent time with Gary Snyder, his roommate from Reed College and fellow participant in the Six Gallery reading. Whalen's interest in Zen Buddhism advanced to the point that he decided to dedicate his life to the practice and was ordained as a monk in 1973. Poetry continued to be an important part of Whalen's life, though he gradually devoted more time and energy to his administrative duties at the San Francisco Zen Center. This sequel collection draws from the complete range of Dogen’s writing.
