La previsión era dar la salida en el mes de abril, pero, ante la evolución de la situación sanitaria, se decidió no celebrar la prueba a lo largo de 2020. Sin embargo, desde hace meses, se ha venido trabajando en retomar su celebración en 2021, tomando la decisión de realizar una prueba de una etapa, que recorrerá la provincia de León el 29 de julio, con salida en León capital Javier Ortega Álvarez y llegada en Ponferrada. Su recorrido por tierras del Camino de Santiago en este Año Jacobeo, lleno de belleza paisajística y monumental, no dejará indiferentes a los aficionados y, sin duda, animará a visitar esta tierra y a probar la rica y variada gastronomía leonesa y berciana. Wind the clock forward one hundred years or so and we find the treasures are still ex- tant though the competition for tourism has increased substantially across the globe. From my own experience a recent stay at Balneario de Mondariz perfectly encapsulates all the favourable comments reflected in this book. the conservation of the cultural and natural heritage is of fundamental importance to the well-being of society. the national trust in England, Wales and northern ireland, a non-governmental organisation founded in 1895, is an exemplar in this respect, having today over 4 million members and employing 6000 staff and over 70,000 volunteers. its properties receive over 19 million visitors each year. in galicia the beginnings of such an organisation, in this case tesouros de galicia, is a brilliant and much needed concept and the hope is that, in time, it will spread to the whole of Spain.

    THE COMING OF THE SPANISH CIVIL WAR The breakdown of democracy in Spain in the 1930s resulted in a torrent of political and military violence. In this thoroughly revised edition of his classic text, Paul Preston provides a deeply disturbing explanation of the democratic collapse, coherently and excitingly outlining the social and economic background. Spain was a backward agricultural country divided by the most brutal economic inequalities. The coming of the Second Republic in April 1931 was greeted by the Left as an opportunity to reform Spain’s antiquated social structure. Over the next two years, the Socialist members of a Republican—Socialist coalition pushed for reforms to alleviate the day-to- day misery of the great southern army of landless labourers. Paul Preston shows how the political activities of the Right, legal and conspiratorial, between 1931 and 1936, as well as the subsequent Nationalist war effort, were primarily a response to these reforming ambitions of the Left. His principal argument is that, although the Spanish Civil War encompassed many separate conflicts, the main cause of the breakdown of the Second Republic was the struggle between Socialists and the legalist Right to impose their respective views of social organisation on Spain by means of their control of the apparatus of state. The incompatible interests represented by these two mass parliamentary parties—those of the landless labourers and big landlords, of industrialists and workers—spilled over into social conflicts which could not be contained within the parliamentary arena. Since the first edition of this book was completed more than fifteen years ago, archives have been opened up, the diaries, letters and memoirs of major protagonists have been published, and there have been innumerable studies of the politics of the Republic, of parties, unions, elections and social conflict, both national and provincial.

Bernadette O’Rourke Department of Languages and Intercultural Studies Heriot-Watt University Edinburgh EH14 4AS b.m.a.o’[email protected] Renée DePalma University of A Coruña Fac. de Ciencias da Educaión Campus Elviña s/n 15071 A Coruña [email protected] Abstract In this article we examine the experiences of a group of language learners as participants in what Garland (2008) refers to as a ‘language-learning holiday’ in Galicia. We examine what motivates these learners to travel abroad to study the language. We explore the ideologies and practices of these students, who as edutourists (Yarymowich 2005) are consumers and the targets of cultural and linguistic commodification. For dominant world languages such as English, these edutouristic activities are interpreted as a means of accessing global markets. However, in minoritized language contexts this interpretation does not necessarily apply. Such is the case in the north-western part of Spain, where Galician is not seen to offer the instrumental and/or economic value of its more globally powerful contact language, Spanish. Nevertheless, despite its minoritized status, non-heritage speakers study Galician either through classes in their home countries or by participating in classes during travel to Galicia. The study examines how meanings, ideologies and identities are constructed by these language learners. We examine what motivates these learners to travel abroad to study the language. We explore the ideologies and practices of these students, who as edutourists (Yarymowich 2005) are consumers and the targets of cultural and linguistic commodification. For dominant world languages such as English, these edutouristic activities are interpreted as a means of accessing global markets. However, in minoritized language contexts this interpretation does not necessarily apply. Such is the case in the north-western part of Spain, where Galician is not seen to offer the instrumental and/or economic value of its more globally powerful contact language, Spanish.
