It is considers metaphysical reality as metaphorically a woman and Shakti is regarded as the supreme godhead. It includes many goddesses, who are considered as different aspects of the same supreme goddess.1 It has different sub-traditions that range from those focused on gracious Parvati to that of fierce and horrifying Kali.2 KEYWORDS : Shakti cult , supreme godhead. INTRODUCTION : Sruti and Smriti literatures are important sources that deal with the Shakti tradition. Lapis Lazuli UGC APPROVED, BLIND PEER-REVIEWED An International Literary Journal ISSN 2249-4529 WWW.PINTERSOCIETY.COM VOL.7 / NO.1/ SPRING 2017 From a Warrior to a Consort: A Study of the Representation of Goddess Kali in the Devi Mahatmya and the Kalika Purana Deeptangshu Das ABSTRACT: The worship of the martial goddesses especially that of Durga and Kali, has been central to the belief system of Shaktism which is based on the celebration of the cosmic, feminine energy or ‘Shakti.’ Scholars of religion and cultural critics tend to interpret Kali within a binary spectrum of a radical/submissive, proto-femininst/patriarchal goddess. However, the plural, ambivalent and paradoxical nature of Kali’s femininity challenge simplistic reading as her trajectory can be mapped across scriptural, visual, mythological, devotional and literary narratives. This paper purports to examine the portrayal of goddess Kali in the Hindu scriptural tradition with special reference to the Devi Mahatmya and the Kalika Purana, the two crucial scriptures that mark the textualization of Kali in the corpus of Hindu religious narratives. There is a remarkable shift in the textual representation of Kali in the concerned scriptures where the portrayal of Kali as an independent, demon devouring goddess in the Devi Mahatmya (a scripture composed around sixth century A.D.) is transformed into a domesticated version of Kali as the consort of Shiva in the Kalika Purana, which is a text composed 88 VOL.7 / NO.1/ SPRING 2017 three centuries after the Devi Mahatmya around ninth century A.D. in ancient Kamrupa (Assam). The Role of the Mahadevi in the Hindu Patriarchy Abstract [From the introduction] The induH religious tradition contains over three hundred and thirty million gods, all of which represent a particular aspect of the Supreme Being. I focus on the divine creative feminine force, known by Hindus as Shakti. In the Hindu pantheon, Shakti manifests itself in the form of the Mahadevi, the supreme goddess. In turn, the Mahadevi manifests herself through many different avatars, or deities. The devi, or goddess, that my study focuses on is Durga, or Maa Durga (Mother Durga). My interest in Durga stems from her warrior persona and her existence in the state of Svātantrya, or the ultimate state of self-sufficiency and independence from anything and anyone in the universe. Durga's “primary mythological function is to combat demons who threaten the stability of the cosmos” (Kinsley 1986:95). Likewise, while all other Hindu goddesses are associated with a consort, or male counterpart, Durga stands alone. -
