News Issue 52 July 16, 2021 Dear All, We have reached the end of what has felt like a very long term for everyone and I am sure you’re all ready to take a break and who knows - perhaps summer has finally arrived and will stay with us for a while? I would like to end the year by saying an enormous thank you to our staff, students, parents and governors who have remained positive despite all the slings and arrows that have been thrown at us over the course of the year. This end of year newsletter is a testimony to the indefatigable enthusiasm of Borlase students and staff which is really what has kept all spirits up even in the most challenging times. Summer Term ends Mr Miall did everything possible to ensure the outdoor concert at Higginson’s Park took place. 1pm finish Students and teachers sang and played through the most horrendous rain while parents huddled Friday 16 July bravely under their umbrellas right to the end. I must thank Borlase parent, Chris Hughes and Brand Events, and Mark Hartley for setting up this very well-organised, socially-distanced event to give us *Yr 7’s and all Yr 12’s, a platform for our music. The pictures don’t fully capture the atmosphere but the umbrellas give some insight. Just hearing Cantorum sing Calon Lân in their very best Welsh was reason enough to & new students in brave the elements. Yrs 8,9 & 10 Likewise, Borlase Rowing and Tennis are clearly thriving. Mr Gray and Mr Monk have shared a flavour start on Friday 3 of this summer’s successes already. It is great to see these sportsmen and women rewarded with September the opportunity to compete and enjoy their sports following committed training. And the spirit of Borlase pervaded the sports day activities where so many young people took part, many stepping First day of term for all in at the last minute for events that they had never done before. Well done to everyone! students on All our students should be congratulated on completing this year of academic studies. There has Monday 6 Sept been some excellent project work in so many subjects and some outstanding academic competition submissions. The annual academic prizes were awarded to “live” students as you’ll see in the pictures. Open Evening for Thank you to everyone who tuned into the streaming and to our speakers Professor Deborah Eyre prospective Year 7 and newsreader Mishal Hussain. The last two weeks have been tough with many children having to isolate and a small number students being unwell. The response of everyone has been incredibly supportive with students and staff Wednesday 22 Sept returning to Borlase@home where needed. We look forward to September with our hopes high. I will write to you all in August to give you the most up to date information on returning to school. Bucks Mind But for now, enjoy a lovely summer. After a year and a half with no live performances, it is safe to say we were having severe withdrawal symptoms. Hence, it was fantastic to see that students and staff have worked harder than ever to keep the arts alive after such a tough year. Despite the challenges of pouring rain, social distancing and isolation of musicians, Borlase still found a way to hold an uplifting and joyous occasion. A sea of umbrellas could be seen running up to the stage, with parents in deck chairs excited by the prospect of live music, from Chapel Choir and Youth Voices to Flute Choir and Senior Jazz. One of the many highlights of the evening includes the Leavers’ Medley, put together by Year 13. This had comedic arrangements, stunning vocals and terrifyingly good impressions of Mr Robson. Cantorum also performed a memorable piece, Calon Lân, dedicated to Miss Mountfield after all the hard work she has put in for the school this year. A special thank you must be given to Jam Theatre and the Alfresco Theatre for being so kind as to lend us their beautiful setup. It was also lovely to see some of our alumni stepping in to help out after other students were forced to go home. There is one thing for certain, the future of the Performing Arts is safe at Borlase! Charity No: 1096750 www.swbgs.com Year 8 Religion and Art project This year in Religion Philosophy and Ethics students have studied a module on religion and art, from art in worship, art which causes religious debate, to murals and graffiti. This module concluded with a very open-ended project, where pupils could create a piece of art of their own, write their own poem or research for an essay about religion and art. Pupils had to select a word to focus their work around, the choice was myth, sanctity, decadence, belonging or authority. The results were fantastic and we were so pleased with the range of work produced. There were some very well researched and detailed essays, some extremely thoughtful poems and many pieces of beautiful artwork. It was so difficult to decide the top ten students, so Mrs Alexander and myself asked Miss Mountfield if she would help us to judge the winners. Miss Mountfield was very impressed with the standard and diverse range of the work produced. We selected 10 students and the following will all receive a certificate before the end of term. The winners were: Maya Misra 8A Emilia Robinson 8B Beatrix Minter 8B Joshua Mustard 8B Samuel Vinall 8B Evi McEvoy 8B Gareth Menezes 8C Amy Clarke 8C Amy Smith 8D Leon Bergmans 8D There were many others who also produced beautiful and thoughtful work and there is now an impressive display of many of the contributions in SF2. With grateful thanks to Glenda Godfrey in the art department who helped immensely with the display. The 10 winners will be put forward to a South Bucks competition which is being judged this week by some of the SCARE members (RE advisers our area), we look forward to finding out the overall winner before the end of term. With many thanks to all those who worked so hard on this project and year 7 - I hope you are inspired, because we will try and do this again next year! © 2018 Sir William Borlase’s Grammar School, West Street, Marlow, SL7 2BR Reg. Charity No: 1096750 www.swbgs.com Marlow Eco Conference The Marlow Eco Conference, spear-headed by Phil Irving and Kevin Ford, was to be held at Great Marlow School in summer 2020, but lockdown meant that this wasn’t possible. However, today, Monday, 12th of July 2021, this has been organised as a virtual event. Burford, Cadmore End, Danesfield, Frieth, Foxes Piece, Holy Trinity, Lane End, Little Marlow, Marlow Infants, Spinfield and St. Peters primary schools all sent in their top five environmental priorities and Anne Irving and Rucha Potdukhe (Year 11 pupils) designed posters and converted these into five areas for the primary, GMS and Borlase pupils to vote on today. Harvey Green (Year 11) also put together a video hosted by Kevin Ford of GMS with presentations by Steve Backshall (explorer, naturalist, presenter and writer), Sir James Bevan (Chief Executive of the Environment Agency), Jenny Tschiesche (the Lunchbox Doctor), Patrick Brown (FourState), Jocelyn Towns (Deputy Mayor, Marlow Town Council), Liz Lorente, Nick Rowcliffe (Releaf Marlow), Karen Feakin, Olwen Elliott, Wild Marlow, Marlow Wombles and John Laker (Marlow Energy Group), which can be viewed at https://www.gms.bucks.sch.uk/wp-content/ videos/Marlow%20Schools%20ECO%20Conference.mp4. KS3 pupils at Borlase voted during assembly and their results were: Energy: Natural energy Education: Outdoor learning Waste: Recycling Biodiversity: Wildlife garden Travel: Walking or using public transport to get to school Top Priority: Recycling Short-term for Borlase: Recycling Long-term for Borlase: Becoming plastic-free Anne, Rucha, Harvey and the new Environment Prefects, Grace Clark-Pratt and Gursukh Sembi, will take these to a meeting of all the Environment Groups from the schools this afternoon and the Borlase group will work with Phil Irving and Innovate to take these forward in 2021-2022. The exciting news is that Mr Kipping and his team will be building a biodiversity area and perhaps restoring the raised beds this summer, which will be a great opportunity for KS3 and hopefully tie in with Mrs Barclay’s plans for KS3 Science Club and Mr Robertson’s health and wellbeing nature trail areas.
