When I asked him what was the matter he merely said to me “Well, you will soon hear it and understand.” One day he said to me “Come to Schober’s to-day, I will sing you a cycle of awe-inspiring songs. I am anxious to know what you will say about them. They have affected me more than has been the case with any other songs.” So, in a voice wrought with emotion, he sang the whole of the “Winterreise” through to us.1 In 1858, Schubert’s friend Josef von Spaun published a memoir of Schubert that included this recollection of the composer’s own performance of his Winterreise,D.911.Spaun’s poignant account is quoted in nearly every pro- gram and recording liner note for the work, and many assume that he meant all twenty-four songs in the cycle, roughly seventy-five uninterrupted minutes of music, presented to a rapt, silent audience—in other words, a standard, modern performance.2 Spaun’s emotive recollection raises many questions, however. The first concerns what Spaun meant by “the whole of the ‘Winter- reise,’” and this depends on the date of this performance, which cannot be established. Decoding the Music Master Pieces: Schubert's Winterreise
Decoding the music master pieces: Schubert’s Winterreise Franz Schubert’s Winterreise, completed in 1827, is a set of 24 songs for voice and piano composed almost entirely using minor keys, which unlike the warm sounds of major keys often sound sad to our ears. Its mournful character reflects some of the personal trauma that Schubert himself was experiencing at the time. After years of a rather debauched life Schubert had contracted syphilis. The disease (or perhaps the treatment of it), was ultimately responsible for his death in 1828 at the age of 31. Schubert described Winterreise as being “truly terrible, songs which have affected me more than any others”. The songs take the audience on a journey that it is clear, by the very nature of the opening song, will end fatefully. Even the title, meaning “winter’s journey”, conjures up a visual image of a cold and dark landscape. The lyrics are poems by Wilhelm Müller and tell the story of a lonely traveller who ventures out into the snow on a journey to rid himself of his lost love. Along the way he experiences a turmoil of different emotions, mostly ranging from despair to greater despair. During his short life Schubert wrote over 600 art songs, 20 sonatas for piano, six major works for violin and piano, nine symphonies for orchestra and an impressive amount of chamber music for other groups of instruments. His art song output consists of the three main cycles – Die schöne Müllerin (The Beautiful Miller’s Daughter), Winterreise, and Schwanengesang (Swan Song), which was published after his death. -

Yet the cycle’s ubiquitous brook often shows the young man bewildering and contrary images. The kinetic accompaniment of Das Wandern turns into the introspective bubbles of Wohin?, while Die liebe Farbe transforms into Die böse Farbe. If Winterreise is a cycle of profound tragedy, its predecessor Die schöne Müllerin is a work of false hope. As the young man approaches the mill, his imagined beloved – like the water at Tantalus’ feet or the fruit tree above his head – moves further from his grasp. The outward pastoral of Wilhelm Müller’s verse cannot mask a profound sense of frustration and the discrepancy between the façade and the poems’ emotional core proved ideal inspiration for Schubert. -

HEARING VOICES: THE NARRATIVE FUNCTION OF THE PIANO VOICE IN SCHUBERT’S WINTERREISE Mariclare Dempsey A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF MUSIC May 2020 Committee: Eftychia Papanikolaou, Advisor Ryan Ebright © 2020 Mariclare Dempsey All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Eftychia Papanikolaou, Advisor Franz Schubert (1797-1828) composed his last song cycle Winterreise in the spring and fall of 1827. The text for this celebrated work comes from a set of twenty-four poems written by Wilhelm Müller (1794-1827) and describes the physical and emotional journey of the protagonist after he has been rejected by his loved one. In this thesis I will analyze the narrative relationship between the voice and the piano and its development throughout the cycle, using the methodologies of Edward T. Cone and Carolyn Abbate. Musico-poetic works can be challenging to view as a seamless piece in which both music and text work together to create a full image of the narrative. By distinguishing the personas of the vocal and piano parts, however, and assessing their distinct “voices” (separately and in collaboration) it is possible to view them as a cohesive whole and grasp the full meaning of the song cycle. The melody sung by the cycle’s protagonist, often referred to as “the Wanderer,” bears much of the obvious burden for narrating Müller’s poetry as the Wanderer’s conscious voice. The Wanderer’s unconscious emotions that guide his journey are found in the piano part which plays an integral role by setting the scene, providing insights before and after the singer’s words, and even actively consoling and inspiring the Wanderer as he pours out the tale on stage for all to hear. -

Included in this study are stylistic characteristics of Westenholz’s songs, observations on the effect poetry had on their musical designs, and discussion of how her compositions fit into the development of the Lied. Chiefly, I explore the compositional techniques used in these songs and analyze how their melodies, rhythms, harmonies, forms, and piano accompaniments relate to the better-known song schools of the period and the works of her contemporaries. -

Winter Journey (Winterreise) is a song cycle of 24 songs for voice and piano composed by Franz Schubert published in 1828. Originally written for tenor voice, the songs are frequently transposed to other vocal ranges, a practice set by Schubert himself. Our production uses the “medium voice” transposition. Who is Franz Schubert? Franz Peter Schubert (January 31, 1797-November 19, 1828) was an Austrian composer of the early Romantic Era. Despite his short lifetime, he composed more than 600 vocal works, mainly lieder (songs). He was a student of Antonio Salieri (made famous in the play and movie AMADEUS). One of his most famous early lieder is the "Erlkönig." What is a song cycle? A song cycle consists of several songs intended to be performed as a single piece. Often, the text in song cycles comes from a single author or poet. Thus, the songs tend to be connected by a narrative, and composers sometimes reflect connections musically as well, using recurring melodies and rhythms. Where did the lyrics for Winter Journey come from? The lyrics for Winterreise (Winter Journey) are poems by Wilhelm Müller (October 1, 1794-Sptember 30,1827). Müller was a German poet and teacher, most well known as the author of the lyrics for Schubert’s song cycles, Winterreise and Die schöne Müllerin. What is Winter Journey about? Winter Journey follows a heartbroken poet who wanders outside into the cold winter weather, singing about his loneliness and despair. -
