  • Abstract This Article Presents the Findings of 2,415 Posts Collected
    Abstract This article presents the findings of 2,415 posts collected from two prominent Australian Football League message boards that responded to a racist incident involving a banana being thrown at Adelaide Crows player, Eddie Betts, in August 2016. It adopts Bourdieu’s concept of habitus to examine the online practice of fans for evidence of racist discourse and the extent to which this was supported or contested by fellow fans. The overall findings are that online debates about race in Australian Rules Football and wider Australian society remain divided, with some posters continuing to reflect racial prejudice and discrimination towards non-whites. However, for the vast majority, views deemed to have racist connotations are contested and challenged in a presentation centering on social change and racial equality. Port Adelaide have indefinitely banned the woman who ignited a racism controversy by throwing a banana at Indigenous star Eddie Betts. The Power completed an investigation into the ugly incident after speaking with the club member on Sunday, concluding it was racially motivated. Betts was targeted by the fan in Saturday night’s 15-point Showdown victory by the Crows at Adelaide Oval. The supporter was seen waving her middle finger at Betts before throwing the banana in his direction. Betts had just kicked his fifth goal in a near best-afield showing during his 250th AFL game, and did not notice the incident. Port Adelaide chairman David Koch said before the club spoke with the woman that he’d be “absolutely disgusted” if racism was found to be the motivation. “We’re a club, we’re an industry, we’re a code that doesn’t shirk away from these sorts of incidents,” he said.

On the Queen’s Birthday weekend, the Nightcliff Tigers Premier Grade side was again able to sip from the chalice of Premiership glory in 2010 after they won the One Day Grand Final against Palmerston in grand style! Well done to A-Grade Skipper Sam Gibson and his charges. Well done lads and to the whole Club for contributing to the success of our Premier side so far in 2010. There is still plenty of cricket to be played in 2010 and much work to do, but with our A, B, C and D-Grade sides all in the finals mix for 2010 as well as a few Junior sides, the Tigers are gearing up for one mighty assault and battery upon the NT Cricket Finals.     ANNUAL REPORT 2018 MELBOURNE CRICKET 19 GROUND TRUST CHAIRMAN’S REPORT At the end of another busy year at the MCG l’m pleased to report that the ground, the precinct and the business of the MCG Trust all remain in very good shape. In last year’s report l referred to the significant negotiations we undertook to extend the AFL’s ground user licence at The G and to the consequent negotiations to extend the MCC’s contract as Ground Manager along with their lease over the ground including the Members’ Reserve. Documenting those negotiations took until October 2018 but all documents have now been executed so everyone can again focus 100% of their attention on the business of running the MCG precinct. Security remains a constant focus of our attention and we have seen the continuous evolution and ongoing implementation of the MCG Security Master Plan. Hostile Vehicle Mitigation infrastructure is being installed in line with that plan and the Trust is working with the Club to explore other permanent security initiatives as part of a broader Precinct Master Planning Framework project. One element of that project is the planning for better separation of vehicular and pedestrian traffic outside the ground. The management of Brunton Avenue on event days is a priority given the amount of pedestrian traffic between Richmond station and the MCG, all of which has to cross Brunton Avenue. Before an event, crowds build-up outside the station to cross Brunton Ave on their way to The G. And afterwards, they build again as they wait to move through turnstiles into the station.
