Sonata No. 2 in A minor, BWV 1003 Allegro Right from the opening piece, Bartók’s music for stringed instruments, percussion and celesta, the Berliner Zeitung critic was enthusiastic: MAURICE RAVEL “Janson’s conducting brings out fine tones. Sometimes they sound so Daphnis et Chloé rough-hewn that they might have been hauled up from the depths.” Suite No. 2 Next on the programme was Shostakovich’s 2nd Violin Concerto, a work seldom played by the Berlin Philharmonic. The soloist was the Violin Frank Peter Zimmermann German violinist Frank Peter Zimmermann, who works closely with Orchestra Berliner Philharmoniker Jansons, to the extent that some critics hail them as a “dream duo” Conductor Mariss Jansons (Berliner Zeitung). Jansons spreads out a finely shaded soundscape for the violinist, who in his turn returns the compliment with “musical intelligence and violinistic furore” (Süddeutsche Zeitung).
