  • Krist Novoselic, Dave Grohl, and Kurt Cobain
f Krist Novoselic, Dave Grohl, and Kurt Cobain (from top) N irvana By David Fricke The Seattle band led and defined the early-nineties alternative-rock uprising, unleashing a generation s pent-up energy and changing the sound and future of rock. THIS IS WHAT NIRVANA SINGER-GUITARIST KURT Cobain thought of institutional honors in rock & roll: When his band was photographed for the cover of Rolling Stone for the first time, in early 1992, he arrived wearing a white T-shirt on which he’d written, c o r p o r a t e m a g a z i n e s s t i l l s u c k in black marker. The slogan was his twist on one coined by the punk-rock label SST: “Corporate Rock Still Sucks.” The hastily arranged photo session, held by the side of a road during a manic tour of Australia, was later recalled by photogra pher Mark Seliger: “I said to Kurt, T think that’s a great shirt... but let’s shoot a couple with and without it.’ Kurt said, ‘No, I’m not going to take my shirt off.’” Rolling Stone ran his Fuck You un-retouched. ^ Cobain was also mocking his own success. At that moment, Nirvana - Cobain, bassist Krist Novoselic, and drummer Dave Grohl - was rock’s biggest new rock band, propelled out of a long-simmering postpunk scene in Seattle by its incendiary second album, N everm ind, and an improbable Top Ten single, “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” Right after New Year’s Day 1992, Nevermind - Nirvana’s first major-label release and a perfect monster of feral-punk challenge and classic-rock magne tism, issued to underground ecstacy just months before - had shoved Michael Jackson’s D angerous out of the Number One spot in B illboard.

  • THE LOYALIST MELVINS of CHARLESTOWN, MASSACHUSETTS and NOVA SCOTIA Howard Storm Browne UE Williamsburg, Virginia
THE LOYALIST MELVINS OF CHARLESTOWN, MASSACHUSETTS AND NOVA SCOTIA Howard Storm Browne UE Williamsburg, Virginia e learned in school about the Thirteen Colonies and the successful effort to throw off the tyrannical English yoke. Most of us were not taught that W the British founded fourteen colonies in North America. The fourteenth was Nova Scotia, a colony since 1713, with a garrison and a Governor at Annapolis Royal. The land surrounding the capitol was occupied by Frenchmen, who were there before the land became British as a result of the Treaty of Utrecht that ended Queen Anne’s War, The political climate was not settled until after the Seven Years War, which we call The French & Indian War. The British forcibly depopulated anybody (ie, French) who would not swear allegiance to Britain. In 1749, the official date of founding, a new capitol was established at Halifax. Thirteen transports with 2,576 settlers arrived 26 June 1749. The governor complained, because they were the dregs of London, of little use. The situation was mitigated by the death of more than a thousand of them during a typhus epidemic. Work then turned to gaining peace with the Micmac Indians. When this was accomplished in 1759, the land was ready for settlement. The Lt. Governor offered free land to New Englanders and others. New settlers began coming in by the boatload.. The English-speakers already there corrupted the name of the new German settlers, “Deutsch,” into “Dutch,” as they were already known in the other Colonies. When these were supplemented by eager New Englanders things began to get underway.

THE MELVINS (USA) Album: «Hold It In» (Ipecac Recordings, VÖ: 10.10.2014) The Melvins return with a brand new album: „Hold It In“ To Be released 10 October via Ipecac Recordings. "Hold It In“ is a refreshing piece of fiction in a boring world of fact and bullsh*t," said Buzz Osborne. http://www.themelvins.net/ https://www.facebook.com/melvinsarmy The ever prolific Melvins return with „Hold It In“, their first studio album as a quartet since 2010's The Bride Screamed Murder. Joining Buzz Osborne and Dale Crover for the 12-song album are Butthole Surfers' guitar player Paul Leary and bass player JD Pinkus. The album was recorded in both Los Angeles and Austin earlier this year. "Paul is one of the best guitar players I have ever heard and Pinkus has an outside the box type of approach to both guitar and bass that you just have to let it ride. I can't believe this actually happened. I'm thrilled." "It's very rare you get a chance to work with three folks from the 'Break A Wish' foundation, all at the same time," said Pinkus. "I believe they'll remember their experience with me forever (or until they finally all lose their fight with S.I.D.S)." “Brass Cupcake is possibly my favorite track on „Hold It In“ We wrote this song with Pinkus and Paul in mind, once we knew this project was a go,” explained Dale Crover. “It's our version of what we think pop music should sound like.

It’s a word that was used to describe a number chains of different “alternative” bands from the region in 1980s, and then also into the 1990s with bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Mudhoney and Screaming Trees. The first noted instance of referring to a Seattle band as “grunge,” was in a 1981 letter by Mark Arm, according to Clark Humphrey in his account of the Seattle music scene, Loser. pearl jam Bruce Pavitt later claimed to have popularized the term as a musical label in 1987, when he wrote some promotional copy for Green River, describing the band as “ultra-loose grunge that destroyed the morals of a generation”. In the late 80s, “grunge” did actually define a sound – high levels of distortion, feedback, fuzz effects, a fusion of punk and metal influences. Many of these bands were on either the C/Z or Sub Pop record labels. Jack Endino, the so-called “Godfather of Grunge” recorded Soundgarden, Mudhoney, Green River, Nirvana and Blood Circus between 1984 and 1989.

Jadranka Zlomislić Osijek, 2014. Korać 2 Abstract This paper explores grunge, a music genre that developed in Seattle, Washington during the 1990s. The aim is to show how grunge contributed to changes primarily in the American society as it moved from underground to mainstream and became a primary pop cultural movement in the 90s. It also became a subculture which has its special characteristics like a certain way of dressing, behaving etc. The paper follows the evolution of grunge from its beginning in the 1980s. Thanks to Sub Pop, an independent record label, and its creators Jonathan Poneman and Bruce Pavitt and their sense for business and self-promotion, grunge moved from underground to mainstream at the beginning of the 1990s with Nirvana’s album Nevermind as a landmark and their single “Smells like Teen Spirit” as the anthem of the Generation X. Furthermore, the paper explores how musicians engaged in different aspects of society like politics, campaigning and activism and how grunge became an essential part of fashion statements and different forms of art such as movies.

  • Town of Richmond, Vermont
TOWN OF RICHMOND, VERMONT 222nd ANNUAL REPORT FISCAL YEAR 2015-2016 We dedicate the 222nd annual report to: The Richmond Selectboard is pleased to dedicate this year’s annual report to the volunteers, staff, and all the donors who support Our Community Cares Camp. Our Community Cares Camp (OCCC) started as a nutrition program for local kids who were go- ing hungry during the summer. Over the years OCCC has grown and now provides a month-long summer camp, with two meals a day, for free, to more than 100 children from k-8th grades. In 2016, kids ate 7,164 healthy meals through OCCC at camp and at other feeding sites in Chittenden East Supervisory Union. OCCC is a nonprofit founded by community members, staffed by community members, funded by commu- nity members, for community kids. And they provide so much more than food. • OCCC closes the opportunity gap by bringing art, music, sports, books, gardening, and other forms of expression to kids whose families can’t afford to pay for camps or classes. • OCCC creates a stable environment where kids know they’ll have good friends, healthy food, caring adults, and lots of fun day after day, year after year. • OCCC builds a leadership ladder where younger campers see older campers become junior counsel- ors, paid counselors, and role models. • OCCC teaches kids nutrition and cooking skills and life skills they can bring home to share with their families. • OCCC offers, as one mom said, a “non-judgment zone.” Kids are free to be themselves and take safe risks.
