We saw all but a few of the endemic birds we were seeking (and the ones missed are mostly rarely seen), and had good weather throughout, with little rain hampering proceedings for any significant length of time. Among the avian highlights were five pitta species seen, with the Blue-banded, Blue-headed, and Black-and-crimson Pittas in particular putting on fantastic shows for all birders present. The Blue-banded was so spectacular it was an obvious shoe-in for one of the top trip birds of the tour from the moment we walked away. Amazingly, despite absolutely stunning views of a male Blue-headed Pitta showing his shimmering cerulean blue cap and deep purple underside to spectacular effect, he never even got a mention in the final highlights of the tour, which completely baffled me; he simply could not have been seen better, and birds simply cannot look any better! However, to mention only the endemics is to miss the mark, as some of the, other, less local birds create as much of a stir, and can bring with them as much fanfare. -

BORNEO: Bristleheads, Broadbills, Barbets, Bulbuls, Bee-eaters, Babblers, and a whole lot more A Tropical Birding Set Departure July 1-16, 2018 Guide: Ken Behrens All photos by Ken Behrens TOUR SUMMARY Borneo lies in one of the biologically richest areas on Earth – the Asian equivalent of Costa Rica or Ecuador. It holds many widespread Asian birds, plus a diverse set of birds that are restricted to the Sunda region (southern Thailand, peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra, Java, and Borneo), and dozens of its own endemic birds and mammals. For family listing birders, the Bornean Bristlehead, which makes up its own family, and is endemic to the island, is the top target. For most other visitors, Orangutan, the only great ape found in Asia, is the creature that they most want to see. But those two species just hint at the wonders held by this mysterious island, which is rich in bulbuls, babblers, treeshrews, squirrels, kingfishers, hornbills, pittas, and much more. Although there has been rampant environmental destruction on Borneo, mainly due to the creation of oil palm plantations, there are still extensive forested areas left, and the Malaysian state of Sabah, at the northern end of the island, seems to be trying hard to preserve its biological heritage. Ecotourism is a big part of this conservation effort, and Sabah has developed an excellent tourist infrastructure, with comfortable lodges, efficient transport companies, many protected areas, and decent roads and airports. So with good infrastructure, and remarkable biological diversity, including many marquee species like Orangutan, several pittas and a whole Borneo: Bristleheads and Broadbills July 1-16, 2018 range of hornbills, Sabah stands out as one of the most attractive destinations on Earth for a travelling birder or naturalist. -

We use phylogenetically informed statistical models to estimate the factors related to lizard productivity. Results Some, but not all, predictions of metabolic and life-history theories are supported. When analysed separately, clutch size, relative clutch mass and brood frequency are poorly correlated with body mass, but their product – productivity – is well correlated with mass. The allometry of productivity scales similarly to metabolic rate, suggesting that a constant fraction of assimilated energy is allocated to production irrespective of body size. -

Field guide to the amphibians and turtles of the Deramakot and Tangkulap Pinangah Forest Reserves Created by: Sami Asad, Victor Vitalis and Adi Shabrani INTRODUCTION The island of Borneo possesses a diverse array of amphibian species with more than 180 species currently described. Despite the high diversity of Bornean amphibians, data on their ecology, behaviour, life history and responses to disturbance are poorly understood. Amphibians play important roles within tropical ecosystems, providing prey for many species and predating invertebrates. This group is particularly sensitive to changes in habitat (particularly changes in temperature, water quality and micro-habitat availability). As such, the presence of a diverse amphibian community is a good indicator of a healthy forest ecosystem. The Deramakot (DFR) and Tangkulap Pinangah Forest Reserves (TPFR) are located in Sabah’s north Kinabatangan region (Figure. 1). The DFR is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and utilizes Reduced Impact Logging (RIL) techniques. The neighbouring TPFR has utilized Conventional Logging (CL) techniques. Conventional logging ceased in the TPFR in 2001, and the area’s forests are now at varying stages of regeneration. Previous research by the Leibniz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research (IZW), shows that these concessions support very high mammalian diversity. Between the years 2017 – 2019, an amphibian and reptile research project conducted in collaboration between the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin (MfN), IZW and the Sabah Forestry Department (SFD) identified high amphibian diversity within the reserves. In total 52 amphibian species have been recorded (including one caecilian), constituting 27% of Borneo’s total amphibian diversity, comparable to two neighbouring unlogged sites (Maliau basin: 59 sp, Danum Valley: 55 sp). -

Davison & 2Zubaid Akbar ABSTRACT There are approximately 298 valid named species of non-marine mammals within the political borders of Malaysia. This total includes 229 species in Peninsular Malaysia, and 221 species in East Malaysia (Sabah and Sarawak), of which 152 species are shared. Over the past 22 years the list for Peninsular Malaysia has expanded by 22, and over the past 25 years the list for East Malaysia has expanded by 30. Most of the additions are bats. Two genera of mammals (Pithecheirops, Diplogale) and 30 species are endemic to Malaysia, so far as records now show. Biodiversity questions range from historical uncertainty, to the definition of geographical limits, continued survival, synonymy, species already described elsewhere but newly recorded (various examples) and taxonomy of cryptic species. -
