IPJTERPRETATION OF AEROMAGNETIC SURVEYS Report on the Chibou;amau Area Report No. 50 - COMPILATION OF GEOLOGY 1,ATTAGANICHIBOUGAiAU AREA SUMMARY Interpreted geology from M. G. C. reports and maps based upon aeromagnotic and geological data has been compiled on a 1 inch to 1 mile map. The compilation includes all of the detailed interpretation to date, as well as the general interpretation. In most cases, the interpretation around the borders of the "detail areas" has been revised, but some further interpretation will be necessary later. The map accompanying this report should be most useful in the geological field programme. A bibliography of published literature together with an index of applicable M. G. C. reports is included in the report for convenience of reference. The general geology of the area is reviewed in the light of M. G. C. interpretation and Gulf field work, and a general discussion of structure and economic geology is included. The map itself, however, represents the important part of the report, and it is largely self-explanatory. .905/swon ;Vs Cake Cl .~ou~MdGc i oSotopa,Hau fha6 D yyqma . en ne ‘r re ROUYry Do At 07'1(e L. I NTRO DUC TI ON The accompanying map is a compilation of all known geological features of the Chibou.amau Area. A large number of additions and changes from the government geological maps have been incorporated on the basis of the interpretation of aeromagnetic data. In a few cases geological information by Dominion Gulf and Mining Geophysics field parties has been included to bring the compilation up to date. In the western portion of the area a number of detailed areas were interpreted. Prior to making up the compilation, the data close to these detailed areas was reinterpreted so that no abrupt break exists be- tween the sections done in detail and those for vàlich only the preliminary interpretation is available. Only a few lines were flown in the eastern part so that most of the information there was taken from known field geology. A number of quite detailed geological maps exist for this section, however, so that only minor changes were made through the use or five reconnaissance aeromagnetic profiles obtained in the fall of 1947. Further interpretation of intermediate areas and correlation of regional geology can be left until the summer's field programme and current detailed interpretation have been completed. For the present, the compilation of geology presented on the map accompanying this report represents the most complete geological picture of the area available to date, and therefore, should be of considerable use in planning and directing the balance of the summer's field programme being undertaken by Dominion Gulf Company. 3. LOCATION AND ACCESS The area designated as the Mattagami-Chibougamau area for the purpose of the aeromagnetic survey extends from a few miles west of the Bell Ri-:er east to Lake Chibougamau. It has a length of about 175 miles and a width of approximately 40 miles, comprising a total area of 7,000 sq. miles. The area can be reached by canoe or by air, the latter being greatly preferable. Two roads are being constructed into the area at present. Bachelor Lake and Lake Chibougamsa are the proposed termini of these roads. CHARACTER 0F ME P.T;û I ON In this large area, most of the topographical features of the eanadian Shield are to be found. In addition to the usual morainal accumulations, the western part of the area has a widespread covering of delta clays, silts, and sands. Laccustrine deposits are most pronounced near the Bell River although it is believed that late- glacial Lake Barlow-Ojibway extended east into the Opémisca district. These accumulations smooth out the irregularities of the bed-rock surfaces ard, as a consegneuce, outcrops are plentiful only near or above the ancient lake level. Outcrops are relatively more abundant in the eastern part of the area. PREVIOUS WORK In so far as the major portion of the region is concerned, our knowledge of the geology is based on the results of exploratory surveys that have been carried on from time to time since 1870. In recent years, however, there has been more detailed work in certain sections of the area where geological conditions appear favourable for the occurrence 4. of mineral deposits and where, such have been discovered, notably in the Chibougamau and Opemi sca districts.
