The plan reflects the Ministry of Natural Resources’ and Ontario Parks’ intent to protect the parks’ natural and cultural features while maintaining and enhancing high quality opportunities for outdoor recreation and heritage appreciation for the residents of Ontario and visitors to the Province. The plan includes implementation priorities and a summary of the public consultation that occurred as part of the planning process. -

Zawadzka Temagami Area Rock Art 159 Beyond the Sacred: Temagami Area Rock Art and Indigenous Routes Dagmara Zawadzka The rock art of the Temagami area in northeastern Ontario represents one of the largest concentrations of this form of visual expression on the Canadian Shield. Created by Algonquian-speaking peoples, it is an inextricable part of their cultural landscape. An analysis of the distribution of 40 pictograph sites in relation to traditional routes known as nastawgan has revealed that an overwhelming majority are located on these routes, as well as near narrows, portages, or route intersections. Their location seems to point to their role in the navigation of the landscape. It is argued that rock art acted as a wayfinding landmark; as a marker of places linked to travel rituals; and, ultimately, as a sign of human occupation in the landscape. North Bay — As the provincial election nears its climax, a coalition of 30 businesses and organizations says the time is now for candidates and party leaders to commit to protecting the world‘s largest remaining stand of old-growth red pine. The Wolf Lake Coalition is using a variety of approaches to seek support from candidates in three ridings and the party leaders for protecting the old-growth forest surrounding Wolf Lake. The forest, located in Greater Sudbury, is part of the Temagami region renowned for its forests, lakes, wildlife and diverse recreational and ecotourism opportunities. Though slated to become part of a network of protected areas, mineral claims and leases have blocked the transfer of the lands into the park system. Unfortunately, the Ministry of Northern Development and Mines has failed to seize past opportunities to let the claims and leases expire, as promised. -

Despite such importance, there remain major knowledge gaps with regard to the geochemistry, mineralogy, and microbiology of cobalt-bearing environments, particu- larly those associated with ore deposits and subsequent mining operations. In such environments, high concentrations of Co (up to 34,400 mg/L in mine water, 14,165 mg/kg in tailings, 21,134 mg/kg in soils, and 18,434 mg/kg in stream sediments) have been documented. Co is contained in ore and mine waste in a wide variety of primary (e.g., cobaltite, carrolite, and erythrite) and secondary (e.g., erythrite, heterogenite) minerals. When exposed to low pH conditions, a number of such minerals are 2+ known to undergo dissolution, typically forming Co (aq). At circumneutral pH, such aqueous Co can then become immobilised by co-precipitation and/or sorption onto Fe and Mn(oxyhydr)oxides. This paper brings together contemporary knowledge on such Co cycling across different mining environments. -

A hydrologic budget approach was used to assess precipitation, streamflow, baseflow, and potential and actual evapotranspiration in seven major basins in the study area on a monthly, annual and long-term basis. V9M 1M5 Assessment of kokanee spawning in Comox Lake EXECUTIVE SUMMARY A kokanee spawning assessment was conducted on Comox Lake to collect baseline information on the timing, spawning distribution, habitat selection, and spawning behavior of Comox Lake kokanee, as well as to determine potential limiting factors to kokanee production. Kokanee are recognized as being an important fish both in the recreational sport fishery and as a key forage species fish for piscivores such as cutthroat trout, yet little information is available on their life history and spawning habitat preferences in Comox Lake. Reconnaissance surveys were conducted that identified 16 potential shoreline spawning sites in Comox Lake. Criteria for suitable kokanee nearshore spawning sites included abundant, uniformly small (<30mm), non-compacted, clean gravel substrate, and water depth of less than 3m. Interviews with local cabin owners and fishermen that frequent Comox Lake were conducted that provided additional information that informed spawner survey planning and key areas to focus effort. Weekly spawning assessments were conducted on Comox Lake between October 7 and November 18, 2016 using a combination of boat and foot surveys. -
