Discussion concerns the research o f Prussian pagan cult lo cations by Christoph Hartknoch, the Prussian historian o f the second h alf of the 18th century. The aim o f the article — to substantiate the Baltic tradition o f Romuva. For that purpose there was a necessity to invoke the materials o f archaic relics from the Land o f Nadruva and surrounding area ( the ancient location of the former Romuva), collected by M atas Pretorius in the second h alf of the 17th century. Tik XIX a. išleista nedi delė jos ištraukų knyga, sudaryta Johno Williamo Piersono1. O visas daugiatomis veikalo leidimas rengiamas jau mūsų dienomis Lietuvos istorijos institute: pasirodė trys tomai2. Tad šiandien M. Pretorijui dėmesio netrūksta. Todėl mūsų straipsnį skirsime K. Hartknocho (1644-1687) knygai Senoji ir Naujoji Prūsija (Alt- und Neues Preussen oder Preussischer Historien zwey Theile. Frankfurt und Leipzig, 1684), kuri buvo tapusi ilgaamže paran kine knyga skaitytojui, besidominčiam išnykusiais prūsais. Be to Hartknochas išleido dar keletą reikšmingų darbų: atrastąją Petro Dusburgiečio Prūsijos kroniką su komentarais (Petri de Dilsburg Ordinis Teutonici sacerdotis Chronikon Prussiae, Francofurti et Lipsiae, Jena, 1679): Prūsijos bažnyčios istoriją (Preussische Kir- chen-Historia, Frankfurt am Main, 1686); Lenkijos valstybę (Res- publica Polonica, Jena, 1678, Leipzig, 1687, 1697, 1699). An tai 1656 m. gruodžio 6 d.

  • Who Were the Prusai ?
WHO WERE THE PRUSAI ? So far science has not been able to provide answers to this question, but it does not mean that we should not begin to put forward hypotheses and give rise to a constructive resolution of this puzzle. Great help in determining the ethnic origin of Prusai people comes from a new branch of science - genetics. Heraldically known descendants of the Prusai, and persons unaware of their Prusai ethnic roots, were subject to the genetic test, thus provided a knowledge of the genetics of their people. In conjunction with the historical knowledge, this enabled to be made a conclusive finding and indicated the territory that was inhabited by them. The number of tests must be made in much greater number in order to eliminate errors. Archaeological research and its findings also help to solve this question, make our knowledge complemented and compared with other regions in order to gain knowledge of Prusia, where they came from and who they were. Prusian people provinces POMESANIA and POGESANIA The genetic test done by persons with their Pomesanian origin provided results indicating the Haplogroup R1b1b2a1b and described as the Atlantic Group or Italo-Celtic. The largest number of the people from this group, today found between the Irish and Scottish Celts. Genetic age of this haplogroup is older than that of the Celt’s genetics, therefore also defined as a proto Celtic. 1 The Pomerania, Poland’s Baltic coast, was inhabited by Gothic people called Gothiscanza. Their chronicler Cassiodor tells that they were there from 1940 year B.C. Around the IV century A.D.

This volume by the Italian Baltist Pietro Umberto D i n i reveals new horizons not only in the studies of Baltic languages, but also in the spread of humanist ideas in the culture of the Baltic region. The monograph is appealing and relevant for scholars of various fields of human sciences. This recent work has an intriguing title and extends over an imposing number of pages. The large size of this book meets the eye, as well as the research mentioned in the intro- duction at the Niedersächsische Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek in Göttingen and the W. F. RIHA Journal 0233 | 30 December 2019 History of the Medieval Furnishings of the Franciscan Church in Toruń during the Reformation Period* Juliusz Raczkowski (Wersja polska zob. RIHA Journal 0232 / For Polish version see RIHA Journal 0232) Abstract The article investigates the history of the medieval interior design and furnishings of the former Franciscan Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Toruń during the Reformation period. The Franciscan Friars were brought to the Old Town of Toruń in 1239; they used the conventual complex until 1557, when it was taken over by the Protestant congregation of the City of Toruń, the former Franciscan Church becoming the major Protestant church both in Toruń and the surrounding region. In 1724, the former Franciscan complex was returned to the Observant Order, who added a number of serious alterations to the church’s interior (including the provision of eighteenth-century furnishings and altars with their retables, and the removal of an old rood screen, etc.). The article elucidates the way medieval interior design and furnishings—mural paintings, tomb slabs, the pulpit, the organ casing, and matronea—functioned in the lay area of the church when used by the Lutheran congregation. In addition, the following furnishings of the former monastic ecclesia interioris are discussed: the high altar and its retable, the medieval choir stalls, the rood screen, and the late medieval sculpture of the Crucified Christ. The analysis of the alterations added to the church’s interior demonstrates that measures undertaken when converting the church for the needs of the Protestant congregation were of a * The article was created based on the paper delivered at the international scholarly conference "The Reformation and Monasteries, Monasteries and the Reformation.

  • Wilno 1585 Colloquium
Odrodzenie i Reformacja w Polsce, XLIX 2005 PL ISSN 0029-8514 Darius Petkunas (Klaipeda) Wilno 1585 Colloquium — Lutheran and Reformed Discord over Sacramental Theology in Lithuania On June 14, 1585, Duke Krzysztof Radziwiłł („Piorun") (1547-1603), Palatine of Wilno (Vilnius) and Hetman of Lithuania, convoked an impor- tant meeting of theologians representing the Lutheran and Reformed Churches in Lithuania to discuss the theological understanding of the Lord's Supper, which had become an occasion of disagreement and an obstacle to further collaboration between them. The aim of the meeting was to effect a reconciliation of the parties which had agreed to and signed the Sandomierz Consensus in 1570, and to address concerns raised by the Lutherans in their Wilno convocation of 1578 because of which they had renounced the terms of the Consensus. The future of united Protestantism lay in the balance. The outcome of this meeting was to have a strong bearing on future relations between the Reformed and Lutheran Churches and the course of Protestantism in Lithuania. Historians have usually passed over this meeting with little or no comment. Prussian theologian and church historian Georg Colbe (1594- 1670), in his Episcopo-presbyterologia Prussico-Regiomontana of 1657, reports simply that the meeting was convoked by Prince Radziwiłł and that Dr. Paul Weiss of the Königsberg Faculty participated. Colbe seems not to have had the protocol before him, because he errs in stating that the meeting was held on June 13th instead of June 14th. Another short report of the colloquium is given by Prussian Historian Christoph Hartknoch (1644-1687) in his Preußische Kirchenhistoria of 1686.

  • I the Reception of Copernicus As Reflected in Biographies* 1
ORGANON 35:2006 Andreas Kühne (Munich, Germany), Gudula Metze (Munich, Germany) THE EARLY COPERNICAN BIOGRAPHIES AND PORTRAITS I The reception of Copernicus as reflected in biographies* 1. Problems of the early modern Copernicus biographies The biographer of a person who was living in the 19th or 20th century is usually confronted with an abundance of material that he has to choose, sort and evaluate in order to separate substantial from insubstantial information. Nicolaus Copernicus’s early biographers, in contrast, had a rather small amount of biographical material that, in addition, sometimes seemed to be of questionable value or veracity. These meagre and dubious sources were determined by several events that mostly occurred in the first hundred years after Copernicus’s death and have a continuing influence up to now. Copernicus’s only disciple, Georg Joachim Rheticus (1514-1576), knew many details of his teacher’s life and a letter from Copernicus’s friend and Confrater Tiedemann Giese, dated July 26th, 15431, tells us that Rheticus had written a biography or at least made a draft of one shortly after Copernicus’s death. For unknown reasons, this manuscript has neither been printed nor even found. A few published biographical notes, for example, in Rheticus’s preface referring to the Ephemerides of 1551“, give us an impression of how much information about Copernicus’s life has been lost. Johannes Broscius (1581-1652) had also planned another and probably more important Copernicus biography, which he never wrote. Broscius, a doctor, theologian, astronomer at the University of Cracow and head of the Cracow observatory, travelled before 1612 to Prussia and Warmia in order to gather unknown material related to Copernicus’s life.

  • Axel E. WALTER – Die (Re-)Konstruktion Altpreußischer
DIE (RE-)KONSTRUKTION ALTPREUSSISCHER IDENTITÄT IN DER REGIONALEN KULTURGESCHICHTSSCHREIBUNG IM OSTPREUSSEN DES 18. JAHRHUNDERTS (LILIENTHAL, ARNOLDT, PISANSKI) Axel E. Walter Abstract The paper focuses on the contribution of regional 18th-century ‘East Prussian’ historiography to the formation of an Old Prussian identity. The author specifies the concept of ‘Old Prus- 39 sianism’, and reveals the main steps in the change in that model of identity in the 18th cen- tury through an analysis of three authors who were active in Königsberg and spanned three generations: Michael Lilienthal (1686–1750), Daniel Heinrich Arnoldt (1706–1775) and Georg Christoph Pisanski (1725–1790). On the basis of their treatises, the paper reveals how in the 18th century, in the territory of the former Duchy of Prussia, a unique regional self-awareness independent of Royal (Polish) Prussia and of Brandenburgian Prussia was developing, as well as a related concept of the past of the region. Key words: Brandenburgian Prussia, Royal Prussia, historiography, regional self-awareness, Old Prussian identity.

The history of the Landtag of the Duchy of Prussia in 1566 695 A RTYKUŁY I MATERIAŁY Janusz Małłek THE HISTORY OF THE LANDTAG OF THE DUCHY OF PRUSSIA IN 1566 Słowa kluczowe: Pruski sejm krajowy, Prusy książęce, Albrecht, książę Albrecht Fryderyk, stany pruskie Schlüsselwörter: Preußischen Landtag, Herzogtum Preußen, Herzog Allbrecht, Herzog Albrecht Friedrich, Preußischer Landtag Keywords: Prussian Landtag, Duchy of Prussia, Albrecht duke of Prussia, Albert Frederic Duke of Prussia, Prussian estates Introductory remarks In 1960, at Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, I defended my Master’s thesis entitled “Dzieje sejmu Prus Książęcych w roku 1566” (The History of the Landtag of the Duchy of Prussia in 1566) written under the supervision of Prof. Karol Górski. A year later, I published in “Komunikaty Mazursko-Warmińskie” an extended and improved chapter III of this work devoted to the genesis of the Prussian Landtag we are interested in1. The next stage was originally to announce the publication of the following chapter of this work concerning the very course of the Landtag debates. This did not happen. It seemed to me then that a more urgent task would be to write an article about the criminal trial of the new Dukely advisors at the Landtag. Such a study appeared in print as early as 1963 also in the “Komunikaty Mazursko-Warmińskie”2. • Yazma Miras / Written Heritage: the Image of the Polish-Lithuanian Tatars As a Transferred Stereotype in German Literature
Mieste HOTOPP-RIECKE Stephan THEILIG Institute for Caucasica, Tatarica and Turkestan Studies Germany YAZMA MIRAS / WRITTEN HERITAGE: THE IMAGE OF THE POLISH-LITHUANIAN TATARS AS A TRANSFERRED STEREOTYPE IN GERMAN LITERATURE Abstract: If we look at the subject of Islam and Eastern Europe in the context of the literatures of our countries, we encounter two paradoxes . On the one hand, there are two long-distance literatures that conveyed via translation narratives about Islam of the East into German literature . This is the Russian and Tatar literature . On the other hand, there are the near-dis- tance literatures, e .g . the Polish and Lithuanian literature, as well as in earlier times the German literature of the Baltics and Silesia . The following paradox seems worth investigating in this literary paradigm: while Tatar literature would have been able to mirror a real picture of Tatar Islam, German litera- ture has instead used almost exclusively narratives from Russian literature, often with a corresponding pejorative connotation . On the other hand, texts dealing with autochthonous Islam in Poland- Lithuania are very rarely translated into the German language . Neverthe- less, there is literature in German in this context . However, it is not written by Polish-Lithuanian Tatar, but written by German authors about them . In this article, we will concentrate on the following topics: the culture translations in texts from long-distance literatures of the Russians, short- distance literature translations from Polish and Lithuanian literature into German and the literatures originally written in German, e .g . Silesia, East Prussia and in today’s Germany concerning Tatars of Poland-Lithuania .
