TED ALLEN HORSESHOES

Exclusively designed by Ted Allen in 1938 with all its features, the side notch and weighted ends, included. First to introduce hard points and hooks. At once it became a leading shoe for 29 years. Figured in the top records of all states and in the National tournament. So far ahead of its time that finally, re- cently, other manufacturers admitted it by trying to copy it. Ted used it, traveling year round for 33 of the 37 years in all kinds of show business, including the tops of three nations. A truly lifetime career.

Norris Maywhoor, 48, of Ft. Wayne, Indiana passed away June 6, suffering a sudden heart attack on the last day of a four weeks vacation during which he and his wife took a trip to British Columbia. Norris was a vice president of the Indiana State Association, an officer in the Allen County Horseshoe Pitchers' Association and an active player and organizer in the Hoosier state. It was mainly through his dedicated efforts that the Allen County club was organized and incorporated and the fine bat- tery of courts built two years ago in McMillen Park in Ft. Wayne. The Midwest "Ringer Round Up" was held on these courts last year and will be held there again this year, July 18-19. Officers of the Ft. Wayne club are redoubling their efforts to make up for the loss of Norris and to make this year's "Ringer Round Up" a success in his memory. The NHPA, Indiana State Association, Allen County Horseshoe Associa- tion and the Midwest "Ringer Round Up" have all suffered a tremendous loss and all send their heartfelt sympathy to Mrs. Maywhoor.

Bill Fulwider Returns To No. Calif. Tourney Trail — Wins Arroyo Viejo Class E Bill Fulwider, veteran Santa Rosa pitcher, who suffered a heart attack a year ago and did not compete in 1969, made a stirring comeback to capture the Arroyo Viejo (Oakland) Class E tourney championship. But in this tourney, Bill recovered his timing and unlocked the door to a successful pitching effort. Bill won 5 straight games and moved to Class D in Northern California competition. Lewis Frantz, a newcomer from Oakland's Mosswood Club competing in only his second tournament, was runner-up. The fledgling Livermore Club had six entrants in the tourney and with Bob Blow doing an excellent job as coordinator, is moving up fast in Northern California memberships. The club has 12 new courts under construction, and has the City of Livermore with them 100% in this effort. The courts are located at the Rodeo grounds in Livermore. GROUP I — B. He held the title until his third place finish in 1933 at the Chicago World's Fair, the first year Ted Allen was champion. Blair placed third in both 1927 and 1928 and fourth in 1926, seventh in 1925 and eleventh in 1923. He also won the tough Ohio state tournament four straight years, 1933 through 1936. He pitched a beautiful one and a quarter turn. During his reign as champ, Blair traveled coast to coast giving exhibi- tions and playing in open tournaments and was a popular, well liked individ- ual who did much to stimulate interest in the game. Blair died in June of 1944 in Florida after a lengthy illness of TB.

ELLIS COBB has earned a firm place in the history of horseshoe by his outstanding contribution to the game as editor of the Horseshoe Pitcher's News Digest since its inception in 1956. Growth in membership and activities of the NHPA can be directly credited to the publication of the monthly magazine for this has been our only means of information and communica- tion which has served to tie the various state associations and local clubs to- gether throughout the country. Printing, editing and mailing the Digest in his spare time is a gigantic task each month filled with many ob- stacles and problems little realized by the general membership. The NHPA owes not only Ellis but also his wife Virginia and daughter Terri, a real debt of gratitude for their work. Ellis has also served as Secretary- Treasurer of the Illinois State Asso- ciation since 1950. He manages the Illinois State tournament each year played at the Illinois State Fair under a huge tent, which makes it unique among ringer tossing events. Cobb has also been an outstanding player in his own right. He made the championship division of the World tourney all three times he entered — 1948, 1950 and 1951. He placed tenth in 1951 with a ringer average of 72.8. Highlight of his World tourney games was the 50-43 defeat he hung on Casey Jones in 1951. Ellis also appeared twice on the TV show, "Championship Horseshoes" in Chicago during the late 1950s, a show that he was instru- mental in promoting and which was on the air for 18 weeks. The trophies awarded to winners of tournaments have, in most cases, the new figure depicting an actual horseshoe pitcher delivering the shoe. Working in conjunction with a Chicago trophy company, Cobb was the model used in developing the figure, now used by four major trophy companies. In 1962 he was awarded the Arch Stokes Memorial trophy for outstanding work in the horseshoe sport. He also is a life member of the NHPA. Included In Hall of Fame Electees The Horseshoe Pitching Hall of Fame selection committee has named three luminaries of the ringer tossing game for induction during the ceremonies during the 1970 World Tournament in South Gate, California. Included is the first woman to be named, Vicki Winston of LaMonte, Mis- souri. Others are Blair Nunamaker of Cleveland, Ohio who held the World title 40 years ago and Ellis Cobb of Aurora, Illinois, the editor of the Horse- shoe Pitcher's News Digest. The trio, subject to ratification by the NHPA convention, will be officially enshrined into the Horseshoe Pitching Hall of Fame during special ceremonies August 1 at the World Tournament. VICKI WINSTON of LaMonte, Missouri became the first lady to be named on the strength of her outstanding record of winning eight World titles, more than any other woman. Her first crown came in 1956 at Murray, Utah as Vicki Chapelle of Portland, Oregon. Vicki added the 1958 and 1959 trophies to her collection while her father Cletus was serving as president of the NHPA. After her marriage in 1960 to Earl Winston, a top ranking horseshoe player from Missouri, Vicki topped the Women's Division in 1961, at Muncie, Indiana, 1963 at South Gate, Cali- fornia; 1966 again at Murray, Utah; 1967 at Fargo, North Dakota and again last year at Erie, Pennsylvania. Vicki placed second after a playoff with Sue Gillespie in 1965 and also gained runnerup honors in 1964 and 1968. She placed fourth in 1960 and fifth in 1962. Tough competition in the Women's Division really began when Vicki came on the scene which makes her record of eight championships all the more remarkable. The longest game on record for Women saw Vicki toss 81 ringers in 100 shoes including 32 doubles and 19 "four deads" last year in a game with Ruth Hangen. Vicki and Sue Gillespie also had five consecutive "four deads" in 1964. These are all records in the Women's Division as are the 383 ringers and 154 double ringers tossed by Vicki in seven games during the event last year at Erie. Vicki averaged 79.6% ringers in 1969.

The pictures of Vicki, Ellis and Blair will be placed on the big Hall of Fame plaque, joining the following, who have been honored by induction in the past; Ted Allen, Fernando Isais, Frank Jackson, Putt Mossman, Charlie Davis, Guy Zimmerman, Casey Jones, Archie Gregson, Arch Stokes, David Cottrell, Ray Howard, Elmer Beller, Harry Woodfield, Curt Day, Elmer Hohl and Bob Pence. A distinguished list of notables from the world of horseshoe both past and present were honored with votes in the balloting. Many of these will un- doubtedly make the Hall of Fame in the future. In fact, John Gordon, (Cali- fornia), Leland Mortenson, (Iowa) and Mrs. C. A. Lanham, (Illinois) were very close in this year's vote. Others who received votes of the selection committee were: Fred Brust (Ohio), Jack Claves (Missouri), Harvey Clear (California), Dale Dixon (Iowa), Bert Duryee (Kansas), Ralph Dykes (Illinois), Harold Falor (Ohio), Paul Focht (Ohio), Ralph Forsstrom (Massachusetts), Sue Gillespie (Indiana), Sam Goodlander (Ohio), Katie Gregson (California), Dan Kuchcinski (Pen- nsylvania), Ben Leighton (Minnesota), Frank Lundin (Iowa), Ray Martin (Illinois), George May (Ohio), Perl Pepple (Kansas), Harold Reno (Ohio), 18 The Horseshoe Pitcher's News Digest / July, 1970

SAINT CHARLES AND WARREN COUNTY, MISSOURI — A new horse- shoe club has been formed by the Saint Charles and Warren County Missouri horseshoe pitchers. The new Saint Charles and Warren County Horseshoe Pitchers Association is made up of eight teams under NHPA rules and regulations, lighted courts, and under the guidance and leadership of Charles Picraux, NHPA member from Defiance, Missouri and Henry Henderson, Sr., NHPA member from Au- gusta, Missouri. Formerly with the Washington, Missouri horseshoe pitchers' association, the demand became so great that Mr. Charles Picraux as president and Mr. Henry Henderson, Sr., Secretary-treasurer of the association helped in the building and developing of four new courts. Requests for further aid in build- ing new courts and new teams are still coming in. They started with two courts per team and have finished two with four courts in open tourney play and have held open tourney play on one court, closed team tourney play on the other. ,.,, •• - -.v v ^ - A v-v,- -m&••>, r- - Sterling, III. Walt Thompson Still Active In Minnesota At 88 Walter Thompson, 88, doesn't let age stand between him and his horseshoe- pitching ambitions. The former jeweler from Canby and Dawson, Minn., played in the 1970 Red River Valley Open tournament at Fargo, N. D. "He's probably pitched horseshoes more years than anyone living," says long-time friend and pitching companion Gust Magnuson of Canby. The tall and agile Scandinavian recalls pitching horseshoes when he was 13 or 14 years old and living in South Dakota. "I played Guy Zimmerman when he was barnstorming southwestern Minne- sota in the 1940's," Thompson said. Zimmerman is a former World Champion. Thompson says he wished that he could have been involved in more tourna- ments over the years. He recalls pitching in a tournament in Hennepin County in the 1920's. A member of the Canby team in the Southwestern Minnesota League for many years, Thompson has spent most of his pitching time on his home court. Thompson says he pitches only 30 per cent ringers now with his lV^-turn Gordon model shoe. But Magnuson is sure Thompson will go higher than that in competition. One winter Thompson went to Florida and spent part of his vacation pitch- ing against some of the leading tossers. At one time he bowled in three leagues. Thompson moved from Canby to Dawson 10 years ago and has been out of touch with the league. He would like to pitch in a senior division of area tournaments if he gets the opportunity.

Henton Top Man In 3rd Annual Burlington, Iowa Open Glenn Henton of Maquoketa, Iowa was in mid-season form to win the third annual Burlington Open held on the Crapo Park courts in Burlington, Iowa. Players qualified by pitching 150 shoes for total points. Players were drawn to form six man groups. They then pitched five 30 shoe games using the alternate pitch and each player counting everything he made. Players scored for each other by carrying a clip board and score sheet and keeping score at the end of each inning. All games were started at the same time and finished almost at the same time. Players then were placed in six man classes and played 50 point cancella- tion games using the alternate pitch all the way. A comparison to how ac- curate this showed one's ability can be seen by how they finished in the finals.
