I look forward to many more years of opportunity to cheer the Bearcats from the stands-but no longer as their "Prexy." During the seasons since 1955, our team members have provided us with many oppor­ tunities for both cheers and groans. But always they have manifested courage, a competitive spirit, sportsmanship, and loyalty. These are attributes of which today's world is sorely in need; and these are the traits, also, that will be exhibited by the members of the 1970 Bear­ cat squad. We all wish Coach Ray Callahan, his staff, and his players much success this year-a crucial year for collegiate football throughout the country. And we are grateful for the important supportive efforts of Dr. Robert A. Wojciak and his UC Marching Band, of the charming and skilled Bearkittens, and of the lively and energetic cheerleaders.     Cincinnati Bengals Team History Planning for the Cincinnati Bengals franchise began three full years before the team began playing in the American Football League in 1968. Paul Brown, who had enjoyed exceptional success as the head coach of the Cleveland Browns for 17 seasons before departing in 1962, had the urge to get back into pro football. In 1965, he met with then-Governor Jim Rhodes and the two agreed the state could accommodate a second pro football team. A year later in 1966, Cincinnati’s city council approved the construction of 60,389-seat Riverfront Stadium, which was scheduled for completion by 1970. The next year, a group headed by Brown was awarded an American Football League franchise that would begin play in 1968. Brown named his team the Bengals in recognition of previous Cincinnati pro football franchises with the same name in the 1930s and 1940s. Brown himself returned to the coaching ranks on the Bengals sidelines for the first eight years. He retired after the 1975 season but continued to serve as general manager until his death in 1991. Mike Brown then succeeded his father as general manager. The 1968 Bengals won their first two home games in 28,000-seat Nippert Stadium against Denver and Buffalo and finished with a 3-11 record, the most an expansion team of the 1960s recorded. Cincinnati improved enough in 1969 that Brown was named the AFL Coach of the Year. In 1970, they captured the AFC Central division title and thus became the first expansion team to win a championship of any kind in just three years.

    ENERGY STAR Success Story: Great American Ball Park, Cincinnati Reds Located on the winding banks of the Ohio River in downtown Cincinnati, the Great American Ball Park is home to the Cincinnati Reds, baseball's first professional franchise. The ballpark, built next door to the Reds’ former home, Riverfront Stadium, officially opened for the 2003 season. Equally as enthusiastic as their hometown fans, the ballpark’s management team continues to improve the ballpark’s energy performance and is a leader among stadiums nationwide. Energy Management with ENERGY STAR The Cincinnati Reds were one of the first Major League Baseball teams to join ENERGY STAR as a partner in 2008 and use ENERGY STAR resources to track energy usage, improve energy performance, and communicate their efforts to staff and the public. Improving energy performance is an important environmental strategy for the Reds and they have received kudos from local officials and enhanced loyalty from fans for leading by example. The ballpark operations management team benchmarks the ballpark’s energy performance using the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Portfolio Manager, an online energy tool to track whole-building energy intensity and greenhouse gas emissions. By inputting historical energy data going back to 2007, and ongoing monthly energy consumption and cost information, the Reds are able to measure progress and quantify improvements. To date, the ballpark’s energy intensity is 27 percent better than the national average for entertainment buildings1, even with an off-season construction project during the winter of 2009. As part of their energy management plan, the ballpark’s building operations management team implemented several energy conservation measures and integrated energy efficient technologies into the ballpark’s infrastructure.
