SITTING “ UNDER THE MOUTH” : DECLINE AND REVITALIZATION IN THE SAKHA EPIC TRADITION OLONKHO by ROBIN GAIL HARRIS (Under the Direction of Jean N. Kidula) ABSTRACT The Sakha epic tradition, olonkho , features the longest and most complex epic tales of all the Siberian peoples. In its most traditional form, olonkho is a solo genre comprised of both dramatic narrative poetry and unaccompanied song alternating throughout the extensive, multiple-evening performance of the work. This work explores the current revival of interest in olonkho, examining what led to its decline during the Soviet era as well as the factors currently playing a role in its revitalization. It addresses the transformations of olonkho in the 21 st century and identifies keys for its long-term sustainability. These four areas—attenuation, revitalization, transformation, and sustainability—are the primary research categories. In order to more effectively posit potential future directions for olonkho, I trace olonkho performance practice historically, exploring the ways it interacted with the contextual milieu of each time period, beginning with those times immediately before and during Soviet power. The research questions are organized around the elements of time , place , and event . The event parameter is further divided into three areas of inquiry: the performers , audiences , and content of the olonkho tradition. The literature addressing these themes is drawn, not just from the discipline of ethnomusicology, but also from anthropology, comparative literature, culture studies, musicology, performance theory, post-Soviet and post-colonial studies, area studies, and sociolinguistic models. Data collection in the field largely relied on ethnographic interviews, documented in first person accounts, both in the text and the accompanying DVD. -

Biographical Note by The HistoryMakers® Actor and comedian Cedric “The Entertainer” Kyles was born on April 24, 1964 in Jefferson City, Missouri to Kittrell Kyles and Rosetta Boyce Kyles. After junior high school, Kyles and his family moved to Berkeley, Missouri, where he graduated from Berkeley High School in 1982. Kyles received his B.A. degree in mass communication from Southeast Missouri State University in 1987, and was hired at State Farm Insurance. He began performing stand-up comedy around the same time, and was a winner of the Miller Lite Comedy Search in 1990. Kyles first appeared on television in 1992, on the variety show, It’s Showtime at the Apollo. The following year, he served as host of BET’s ComicView, and in 1995, he hosted HBO’s Def Comedy Jam. -

1 THE HUMOR IN BEING BLACK: D.L.HUGHLEY, KEVIN HART AND STAND-UP COMEDY - Isha Bihari, Joe Varghese Yeldho, National Institute of Science Education and Research, HBNI, Odisha, India ABSTRACT Comedy scripts the monotony of life in a language that humors all and mirrors the disruptive social reality of private life. Stand-up comedy, today, is a billion dollar entertainment industry and the comedians, pop-culture icons. The paper evaluates the performances of two celebrity stand-up comedians, D.L Hughley and Kevin Hart through their respective Netflix specials. Their content is drawn from the lived experience of growing up black in America, yet differs in comic style. While D.L Hughley traverses the highs and lows of African-American lives in the States, presenting a satirical take on social issues; Kevin Hart paints a self-deprecating portrait of his personal life, he is animated, free-spirited and exaggerates anecdotal familial episodes to humor the audience. Their performance reveals the meaning of comedy in black lives, and its importance as a public-communication tool beyond entertainment. Laughter and deep sighs, humor to spice up lives A joke in troubled times, to impress funny smiles An escape from the drudgery, from a life of slavery A thoughtful comedy is a one that coats a tragedy1 In his 2013 novel Inferno, Dan Brown extols the legacy of the famous Italian poet-philosopher Dante Alighieri and explains why the latter’s magnum opus Divine Comedy is named such. He writes, "The Divine Comedy has nothing comedic about it. It is called a comedy for another reason entirely. -

He was raised in East St. Louis, Illinois, by his parents Warrington W. Hudlin, Sr. and Helen (Cason) Hudlin. In 1983, Hudlin received his B.A. degree from Harvard University where his senior thesis project was the first version of the film, House Party. Hudlin was supported as an artist-in-residence by the Illinois Arts Council from 1984 to 1985. At the age of seventeen, Hudlin co-founded the non-profit Black Filmmakers Foundation (BFF) with his brother, Warrington Hudlin, Jr., in 1978. -

Cole Spring 2013 Abstract Firespitters: Performance, Power, and Payoff in African American Women’s Humor, 1968- Present by Jessyka Nicole Finley Doctor of Philosophy in African American Studies University of California, Berkeley Professor Ula Y. Taylor, Chair This study considers the social, cultural, and political production of black women's humor, making the case that humor becomes more than merely a technique of entertainment. Instead, I argue that humor is a mode of literacy and site of self-authorship for African American women across a variety of discursive fields, including literature, sketch comedy, stand-up comedy, and electoral politics. Usually described as a “routine,” the professional stand-up comics of this study are in fact presenting new ways of thinking about race, class, sex, culture, and power. Using archival research, ethnographic interviews, participant observation, and close readings of performances, this dissertation engages several questions: how do black women use humor to express emotions like desire, anger, and contempt? What are the effects of black women's public performances on their own identities? -
