Development of the Global Film Industry The global film industry has witnessed significant transformations in the past few years. Regions outside the USA have begun to prosper while non-traditional produc- tion companies such as Netflix have assumed a larger market share and online movies adapted from literature have continued to gain in popularity. How have these trends shaped the global film industry? This book answers this question by analyzing an increasingly globalized business through a global lens. Development of the Global Film Industry examines the recent history and current state of the business in all parts of the world. While many existing studies focus on the internal workings of the industry, such as production, distribution and screening, this study takes a “big picture” view, encompassing the transnational integration of the cultural and entertainment industry as a whole, and pays more attention to the coordinated develop- ment of the film industry in the light of influence from literature, television, animation, games and other sectors. This volume is a critical reference for students, scholars and the public to help them understand the major trends facing the global film industry in today’s world. Qiao Li is Associate Professor at Taylor’s University, Selangor, Malaysia, and Visiting Professor at the Université Paris 1 Panthéon- Sorbonne. He has a PhD in Film Studies from the University of Gloucestershire, UK, with expertise in Chinese- language cinema. He is a PhD supervisor, a film festival jury member, and an enthusiast of digital filmmaking with award- winning short films. VOL. 116. NO. 4 www.uiwlogos.org October 2015 Agnese discusses guns, progress By Stephen M. Sanchez LOGOS NEWS EDITOR The University of the Incarnate Word community will be polled to get its views on the state’s new law allowing concealed guns on campus but UIW will likely opt out, the president said. Dr. Louis J. Agnese Jr., who’s been president 30 years, shared this with those who attended his annual “State of the University” address on Oct. 6 at CHRISTUS Heritage Hall. Agnese also gave a mostly upbeat report on the university’s growth in his “Looking Ahead to 2020” PowerPoint presentation, pointing out how UIW has grown from 1,300 students and a budget of $8 mil- lion when he first became president in 1985 to its 11,000 students globally and budget in the hundreds of millions today. He’s seen a small college morph into the fourth-largest private school in the state and the largest Catholic institution in the state. UIW currently has 10 campuses in San Antonio, one in Corpus Christi, and another in Killeen. The university also contracts with 144 sister schools overseas in its Study Abroad program. More than 80 majors are offered including bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees. UIW also has professional schools in pharmacy, optometry and physical therapy with a School of Osteopathic Medicine set to open in fall 2017 at Brooks City Base. UIW students also receive more than $150 million annually in financial aid. - Cont. on page 2 Stephen M. Sanchez/ LOGOS NEWS EDITOR -Agnese discusses progress.

Competition or Collusion? Game Theory in Security, Sports, and Business A CCICADA Homeland Security Module James Kupetz, Luzern County Community College [email protected] Choong-Soo Lee, St. Lawrence University [email protected] Steve Leonhardi, Winona State University [email protected] 1/90 Competition or Collusion? Game Theory in Security, Sports, and Business Note to teachers: Teacher notes appear in dark red in the module, allowing faculty to pull these notes off the teacher version to create a student version of the module. Module Summary This module introduces students to game theory concepts and methods, starting with zero-sum games and then moving on to non-zero-sum games. Students learn techniques for classifying games, for computing optimal solutions where known, and for analyzing various strategies for games in which no optimal solution exists. Finally, students have the opportunity to transfer what they’ve learned to new game-theoretic situations. Prerequisites Students should be able to use the skills learned in High School Algebra 1, including the ability to graph linear equations, find points of intersection, and algebraically solve systems of two linear equations in two unknowns. Knowledge of basic probability (such as should be learned by the end of 9th grade) is also required; experience with computing expected value would be helpful, but can be taught as part of the module. No computer programming experience is required or involved, although students with some programming knowledge may be able to adapt their knowledge to optional projects. Suggested Uses This module can be used with students in grades 10-14 in almost any class, but is best suited to students in mathematics, economics, political science, or computer science courses.

  • Shattered Glass
Movie Kit Shattered Glass Year of Release: 2003 Rating: PG-13 Length: 94 min English level: Medium Director: Billy Ray Starring: Hayden Christensen, Peter Sarsgaard, Chloe Sevigny Themes: Journalistic Integrity, Media Literacy, Anti-Corruption Warning/General Advisory Includes some profane language, brief drug use Shattered Glass is the true story of a personable young journalist’s rapid rise to becoming a top feature writer at The New Republic, a popular American magazine with many articles on American politics and culture. Twenty-something year old Stephen Glass’ notoriety grew through his ability to find entertaining human interest angles to what otherwise may have just been typical news stories. His career possibilities seemed limitless until it was discovered that Glass was guilty of journalistic fraud, where 27 of his 41 published stories were either partially or completely made up. Additional Movie Background In the mid-1990s, Stephen Glass was making a name for himself by writing a series of topical and entertaining feature articles for The New Republic magazine. When his stories received increased scrutiny, it was discovered that he made up sources, quotations and sometimes even entire situations for many of his stories. His credibility destroyed, Glass was dismissed by The New Republic and his career in journalism was finished. One of Glass’ most successful stories, also featured in this movie, was about how technology companies try and prevent hackers from damaging their products. In his piece “Hack Heaven,” Glass wrote about how a teenage hacker Ian Restil was given a lucrative job by software company Jukt Micronics so that he would stop hacking into the company’s security system.
