Hbo Premieres Original Drama Film the Normal Heart HBO PREMIERES ORIGINAL DRAMA FILM “THE NORMAL HEART” Broadway run, and directed by Emmy® winner Ryan Murphy, the powerful film tells the story of the rise of the HIV-AIDS crisis in New York in the early 80’s. It takes an unflinching look at the nation’s sexual politics as gay activists and their allies in the medical community fought to expose the truth about the burgeoning epidemic to a city and nation in denial. The Normal Heart brings together a cast of talented actors, including Mark Ruffalo as Ned Weeks, a gay writer looking for answers as he witnesses how the mysterious illness begins to take a heavy toll on the gay community; Matt Bomer as Felix Turner, a reporter who becomes Ned’s lover; Taylor Kitsch as Bruce Niles, a closeted investment banker who becomes a prominent AIDS activist; Emmy® winner Jim Parsons as activist Tommy Boatwright, the same role he played on the Broadway version in 2011; and for the first time in an HBO production, Julia Roberts as Dr. Emma Brookner, a childhood survivor of polio who treats many of the early victims of HIV-AIDS. The drama also stars Alfred Molina in the role of Ben, a successful attorney and Ned’s older brother; Tony® winner Joe Mantello as Mickey Marcus; Jonathan Groff (HBO’s “Looking”) as Craig; Denis O’Hare (HBO’s “True Blood”) as Hiram Keebler; Stephen Spinella as Sanford; Corey Stoll as John Bower; Finn Wittrock as Albert; and BD Wong (HBO’s “Oz”) as Buzzy. The Normal Heart was directed by Ryan Murphy (“Eat, Pray, Love” and “Glee”); written by Larry Kramer; executive produced by Murphy, Dante Di Loreto, Jason Blum, Brad Pitt and Dede Gardner; co-executive produced by Ruffalo; and produced by Scott Ferguson (HBO’s “Temple Grandin”).   Images from the film can be downloaded from http://we.tl/hDsIIZ1s3q About HBO Latin America HBO Latin America is the premium television network leader that, in addition to being recognized for the quality and diversity of its original programming, films and documentaries, also provides services with the highest technology in SD and HD formats in more than 24 countries of Latin America and the Caribbean through its channels HBO, HBO2, HBO Signature, HBO Plus, HBO Family, HBO Caribbean, HBO On Demand, HBO GO, Cinemax, MAX, MAX Prime, MAX HD and MAX Caribbean. • Transgender Representation on American Narrative Television from 2004-2014
TRANSJACKING TELEVISION: TRANSGENDER REPRESENTATION ON AMERICAN NARRATIVE TELEVISION FROM 2004-2014 A Dissertation Submitted to the Temple University Graduate Board In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY by Kelly K. Ryan May 2021 Examining Committee Members: Jan Fernback, Advisory Chair, Media and Communication Nancy Morris, Media and Communication Fabienne Darling-Wolf, Media and Communication Ron Becker, External Member, Miami University ABSTRACT This study considers the case of representation of transgender people and issues on American fictional television from 2004 to 2014, a period which represents a steady surge in transgender television characters relative to what came before, and prefigures a more recent burgeoning of transgender characters since 2014. The study thus positions the period of analysis as an historical period in the changing representation of transgender characters. A discourse analysis is employed that not only assesses the way that transgender characters have been represented, but contextualizes American fictional television depictions of transgender people within the broader sociopolitical landscape in which those depictions have emerged and which they likely inform. Television representations and the social milieu in which they are situated are considered as parallel, mutually informing discourses, including the ways in which those representations have been engaged discursively through reviews, news coverage and, in some cases, blogs. ii To Desmond, Oonagh and Eamonn For everything. And to my mother, Elaine Keisling, Who would have read the whole thing. iii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS Throughout the research and writing of this dissertation, I have received a great deal of support and assistance, and therefore offer many thanks. To my Dissertation Chair, Jan Fernback, whose feedback on my writing and continued support and encouragement were invaluable to the completion of this project.

  • Agnese Discusses Guns, Progress by Stephen M
VOL. 116. NO. 4 www.uiwlogos.org October 2015 Agnese discusses guns, progress By Stephen M. Sanchez LOGOS NEWS EDITOR The University of the Incarnate Word community will be polled to get its views on the state’s new law allowing concealed guns on campus but UIW will likely opt out, the president said. Dr. Louis J. Agnese Jr., who’s been president 30 years, shared this with those who attended his annual “State of the University” address on Oct. 6 at CHRISTUS Heritage Hall. Agnese also gave a mostly upbeat report on the university’s growth in his “Looking Ahead to 2020” PowerPoint presentation, pointing out how UIW has grown from 1,300 students and a budget of $8 mil- lion when he first became president in 1985 to its 11,000 students globally and budget in the hundreds of millions today. He’s seen a small college morph into the fourth-largest private school in the state and the largest Catholic institution in the state. UIW currently has 10 campuses in San Antonio, one in Corpus Christi, and another in Killeen. The university also contracts with 144 sister schools overseas in its Study Abroad program. More than 80 majors are offered including bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees. UIW also has professional schools in pharmacy, optometry and physical therapy with a School of Osteopathic Medicine set to open in fall 2017 at Brooks City Base. UIW students also receive more than $150 million annually in financial aid. - Cont. on page 2 Stephen M. Sanchez/ LOGOS NEWS EDITOR -Agnese discusses progress.

"Life's most persistent and urgent question is; what are you doing for others?" -MLK OUR VISION For over a decade, MDC has helped establish rewarding relationships between thousands of individuals, businesses and charities who care deeply about the well-being of others and the community. Through our work (video production, event planning & consulting) we want to share stories that matter, organize events that build bridges, highlight extraordinary individuals, create simple and effective ways of giving back, and act as professional matchmakers. Our mission has always been to connect the people who want to help with the people who need help the most. From the start, we've witnessed heartbreaking scenarios where trauma and hardship causes a child or family to feel isolated and hopeless. Despite what we're taught, time is more precious than gold and we strive to make every day, hour and minute count. The world does not stop when tragedy strikes; but good people can and do. We enlist the help of caregivers across every business sector around the globe and rely on them to help us create special moments in time that bring hope and joy to those suffering through hardship. We've created an Active Response Team; an unofficial team of do-gooders who are willing to step up to the plate when needed. And just like the word "team" signifies, together everyone achieves more. MDC works by cause, not by client -- and in doing so, it allows us to foster collaboration and look after the interests of all involved. The impact we make by working together is more powerful and far-reaching than most individuals can achieve on their own.

They risked their lives and used their camera lenses to tell the world of the brutality and violence associated with the first free elections in post Apartheid South Africa in the early 90s. This intense political period brought out their best work – two won Pulitzers during the period – but cost them a heavy price. Based on the book of the same name by Marinovich and Silva, the film stars Ryan Phillipe, Malin Akerman and Taylor Kitsch and explores the thrill, danger and moral questions associated with exposing the truth. 2 ABOUT THE DIRECTOR Written and directed by Steven Silver, The Bang Bang Club is a Canada/South Africa co-production from producer Daniel Iron of Foundry Films Inc.
