WAKE's third full length album is a war zone of ferocious and swarming aggression that elevates the bar of grindcore to an entire new level, opening massive wounds in the listener's perceptions with a vicious and unrelenting onslaught of grindcore, sludge, black metal, crust and crippling post-hardcore. https://7degreesrecords.bandcamp.com/album/7dr030-wake-sowing-the-seeds-of-a-worthless-tomorrow-lp 2) 7DR029 - CANCERCLAN - st LP (07/2015) 5Tradepoints - Wholesale 8,40€ https://7degreesrecords.bandcamp.com/album/7dr029-cancer-clan-s-t-lp 3) 7DR026 - HAAPOJA / DEPHOSPHORUS - Collaboration LP + DL-Code (02/2015) 4Tradepoints - Wholesale 7€ Co-release with HandshakeInc, Nerve Altar So a band from Greece and a band from Finland walk into a bar...okay, not really, but Greece's Astro Grinders Dephosphorus and Finland's rising stars of the Unparalled Sense of Violent Groove have teamed up to release "Collaboration" LP - a nine song, discordantly brutal masterpiece that explores the more tortured, emotional and existential side of the contemporary extreme underground. But don't worry, it still totally grinds and pummels (and there's even a slow jam for grandma!) Far more than a mere split, this is a trve kvlt collab: each band exchanged singers on each opening song and guitarists – AND the solo by Haapoja’s Pekka Kivela on Dephosphorus' tribute to Slayer "Shades of Reality", after all the release is dedicated to the late Jeff Hanneman. Dephosphorus hail from Athens, Greece and play a unique musical style known as astrogrind: they endorse a cosmic, mind expanding aesthetic, striving to forge a creative damage path through the underground scene. With “Collaboration LP,” Dephosphorus return hot on the heels of 2014’s “Ravenous Solemnity” with 5 tracks of their signature hybrid of grind, thrash and underground delights. Vocals dragged from the corpse of just-dead banshee, a multi-verse of blast-beats and glorious riffs that seize you like a rabid bear hug. On the other side of the wax we have Finland’s Haapoja, who bring a bit more of a blackened approach to their fierce renditions. Contributing 4 tracks to the “Collaboration LP”, Haapoja return to form heard on their 2011 and 2013 lps, spitting angular, befowled and almost mathy riffs over nuclear-clock precision beats and raw-throated howls. Borrowing musical sensibilities from black metal, hardcore, thrash and grindcore, Haapoja expound on themes of existential and cosmic plights – man lost in an unknowable universe with nothing but a few bleak stars to guide him. Viral Graphics is responsible the stunning artwork, and the wax comes with a lyrics insert printed on gorgeous cardstock, with reverse board/uncoated paper jackets. Available as a digital download directly from the bands, and on limited 180 gm vinyl from Handshake Inc. 7degrees Records and Nerve Altar! https://dephosphorus.bandcamp.com https://haapoja.bandcamp.com 4) 7DR025 - KEITZER - The Last Defence LP (08/2014) 5 Tradepoints - Wholesale 8,40€ Co-release with EverydayHate & IFB Records / CD by FDA Rekotz The German blastbeat lunatics are back to burn the hell down with their brandnew 5th. studio album named „The Last Defence“. Maintaining since 2011 and the now classic “Axiom” mini-LP high standards and a consistent discographic presence, they have been graced with the enthusiastic support of a cult following comprised of eclectic music lovers from all over the globe. “Ravenous Solemnity”, the 2nd full-length album succeeding to 2012’s critically and fan acclaimed “Night Sky Transform”, marks a milestone for the band. The addition behind the drum kit of John Votsis, one the most talented and dedicated musicians of the local Greek scene, has been instrumental in making of this dense, 43-minute-long odyssey Dephosphorus’ most intense and majestic effort to date. Illustrated once again with stunning artwork by analog visionaries and friends Viral Graphics, packaged as a glorious gatefold double LP pressed on 180g heavy wax by the good care of the band’s allies and vinyl specialists 7 Degrees Records in cooperation with Handshake Inc., the latter providing for the first time North American distribution for the band, “Ravenous Solemnity” is destined to be a classic gem in any extreme audiophile’s record collection. A digital version is available for a reasonable fee from the band’s Bandcamp page, www.dephosphorus.com 8) 7DR021 : WHO’S MY SAVIOUR – Wall of Sickness 12“ MLP + DL-Code (10/2013) 4TradePoints Wholesale 6€ WHO’S MY SAVIOUR from Rostock& Berlin/ Germany exist since 2001, consist and consisted of ex-/ current members of Wojczech, Cyness, Bad Luck Ride on Wheels, Curse the Cross, Helwec. After Splits with Elysium and Idiot Savant and a full length CD called „Glasgow Smile“ on Power-It-Up Records, several shorter and longer tours with the likes of Pretty Little Flower, Idiot Savant, Skarp, Needful Things, just to name a few, the band finally recorded their new tracks after being on hiatus for some years. And within these 7 new Tracks in 18 minutes, they carry on their own interpretation of modern Grindcore, just where they left the stage in 2007 with „Glasgow Smile“. Driven by blastbeats, they blend in various styles of other noises, such as hardcore, metal, math- and post-metal to create music that is pushing the boundaries to other spheres and beyond. Elaborate guitar and bass work, well placed samples, and the organic yet brutal sound are making the recording to what it is, as „Wall of Sickness“ is meant to be a tribute to mankind... Recorded by Pierre at Ostseerockstudios between Spring 2012 and Summer 2013, Mixed by Pierre Bernhard & Peter Schade, Mastered by Pluto Poserslaughter at Vintage Mastering, Aug. 2013 http://7degreesrecords.bandcamp.com/album/7dr021-whos-my-saviour-wall-of-sickness-12 http://www.whosmysaviour.com https://www.facebook.com/pages/Whos-My-Saviour/571979736169151 9) 7DR019 : WAKE – False LP (180gr Black Vinyl, Gatefold, DL-Code) (06/2013) 5TradePoints Wholesale 7€ An ugly cloud of bile and filth descends from the ether. Towards you. Eons of hateful condensation. An air mass of pure filth and anger. It rumbles into existence, and expels a downpour of hot, wet piss, shit and disease that quickly pools and rises – your ankles, your waist, the top of your head. You are engulfed by a physical manifestation of evil…music…a waterfall of raging emotion – acid rain – that strips the body down to a raw, vulnerable and clamoring mass of nothingness that quivers and suffers, waiting, to transcend the void of human existence, to skip the light, and arrive defeated, to a new world of pain, darkness and unrest. This is the world of ‘False.’ The new album by WAKE. So maybe it’s a hard sell, but with “False,” Calgary’s WAKE have created one of the most angry, vicious and volatile albums you’ll ever hear. Period. Seriously. Eleven songs of raw, unwavering and filthy hardened, deathened grind that come out of nowhere, leave you gasping for breath, and wondering what the hell just happened. This is a chaotic, pulsating, airborne event, not an album…it’s a return to form for extreme music – real danger, real anger and real beats and riffs. “False” is the sound of a prisoner getting shived. Of a mother stealing her son’s Ritalin for dope. Of a one-legged, starved dog, straining to eat the maggots in its own ass. And when the hate stops you’ll know it’s over, and if you were paying attention, and you’ve got the strength, you’ll play it again.

  • Hipster Black Metal?
Hipster Black Metal? Deafheaven’s Sunbather and the Evolution of an (Un) popular Genre Paola Ferrero A couple of months ago a guy walks into a bar in Brooklyn and strikes up a conversation with the bartenders about heavy metal. The guy happens to mention that Deafheaven, an up-and-coming American black metal (BM) band, is going to perform at Saint Vitus, the local metal concert venue, in a couple of weeks. The bartenders immediately become confrontational, denying Deafheaven the BM ‘label of authenticity’: the band, according to them, plays ‘hipster metal’ and their singer, George Clarke, clearly sports a hipster hairstyle. Good thing they probably did not know who they were talking to: the ‘guy’ in our story is, in fact, Jonah Bayer, a contributor to Noisey, the music magazine of Vice, considered to be one of the bastions of hipster online culture. The product of that conversation, a piece entitled ‘Why are black metal fans such elitist assholes?’ was almost certainly intended as a humorous nod to the ongoing debate, generated mainly by music webzines and their readers, over Deafheaven’s inclusion in the BM canon. The article features a promo picture of the band, two young, clean- shaven guys, wearing indistinct clothing, with short haircuts and mild, neutral facial expressions, their faces made to look like they were ironically wearing black and white make up, the typical ‘corpse-paint’ of traditional, early BM. It certainly did not help that Bayer also included a picture of Inquisition, a historical BM band from Colombia formed in the early 1990s, and ridiculed their corpse-paint and black cloaks attire with the following caption: ‘Here’s what you’re defending, black metal purists.

Proposing a third term that operates beyond the dichotomy of high culture and mass culture and yet offers a fresh approach to both, these essays address a multitude of different topics that can all be classified as unpopular culture. From David Foster Wallace and Ernest Hemingway to Zane Grey, from Christian rock and country to clack cetal, from Steven Seagal to Genesis (Breyer) P-Orridge, from K-pop to The Real Housewives, from natural disasters to 9/11, from thesis hatements to professional sports, these essays find the unpopular across media and genres, and they analyze the politics and the aesthetics of an unpopular culture (and the unpopular in culture) that has not been duly recognized as such by the theories and methods of cultural studies.

Volume 18 Number 42 FREE Championing the musically jaded for over 15 years DISPOSABLE LOCAL REVIEWS A grouping of the local bands (from Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, DC) for this issue point out, D.U. classes Misery Index as a grindcore band. Look at the covers appearing Condemn the Infected Demo here as evidence: Disrupt, Minor Threat, Napalm Death, Terrorizer. And there’s more to his three-song CD-R delivers the death metal goods. Want guttural and raspy look at with this release: all of the lyrics from the EPs and splits, a gig list through 2009 vocals? Want technical guitars and artificial harmonics? Want fusion bass chords? (when they put this baby out), and live tracks. Essential for any Misery Index fan, and TTons of riffs per song? How about blast beats and double bass? You got all that here. it’s damn good for anybody into intelligent death grind, if you want to call it that. There’s a bit of Suffocation, a bit of Morbid Angel, and various other proper death metal www.miseryindex.com bands to draw influence from. The third track, “Passages to Perdition,” has a neato drum intro, and the rest of the music on this demo is similarly impressive. It’s how they do in Maryland. Permafrost Demo 2011 www.myspace.com/condemntheinfected If these guys are death metal, then they’re “blackened” death metal, which if we’re correct means DM with a BM influence. Death metal vocals mingle with blast beats, black metal-esque riffs, and shaky production values, but there’s some interesting ideas Druglord 2010 demo on Demo 2011 , for example the slow, crunchy riff on top of a blast on “Shiva.”And Their Facebook info tab reads, “3 old punks from back in the day (early 80s) playing while Virginia’s Permafrost is low on presentation on their four-song demo, they’re high loud, slow, bass drenched metal.” The band isn’t bass drenched so much, but it’s on positive mental attitude.
