Hipster Black Metal?
Hipster Black Metal? Deafheaven’s Sunbather and the Evolution of an (Un) popular Genre Paola Ferrero A couple of months ago a guy walks into a bar in Brooklyn and strikes up a conversation with the bartenders about heavy metal. The guy happens to mention that Deafheaven, an up-and-coming American black metal (BM) band, is going to perform at Saint Vitus, the local metal concert venue, in a couple of weeks. The bartenders immediately become confrontational, denying Deafheaven the BM ‘label of authenticity’: the band, according to them, plays ‘hipster metal’ and their singer, George Clarke, clearly sports a hipster hairstyle. Good thing they probably did not know who they were talking to: the ‘guy’ in our story is, in fact, Jonah Bayer, a contributor to Noisey, the music magazine of Vice, considered to be one of the bastions of hipster online culture. The product of that conversation, a piece entitled ‘Why are black metal fans such elitist assholes?’ was almost certainly intended as a humorous nod to the ongoing debate, generated mainly by music webzines and their readers, over Deafheaven’s inclusion in the BM canon. The article features a promo picture of the band, two young, clean- shaven guys, wearing indistinct clothing, with short haircuts and mild, neutral facial expressions, their faces made to look like they were ironically wearing black and white make up, the typical ‘corpse-paint’ of traditional, early BM. It certainly did not help that Bayer also included a picture of Inquisition, a historical BM band from Colombia formed in the early 1990s, and ridiculed their corpse-paint and black cloaks attire with the following caption: ‘Here’s what you’re defending, black metal purists. -
Unpopular Culture and Explore Its Critical Possibilities and Ramifications from a Large Variety of Perspectives

Proposing a third term that operates beyond the dichotomy of high culture and mass culture and yet offers a fresh approach to both, these essays address a multitude of different topics that can all be classified as unpopular culture. From David Foster Wallace and Ernest Hemingway to Zane Grey, from Christian rock and country to clack cetal, from Steven Seagal to Genesis (Breyer) P-Orridge, from K-pop to The Real Housewives, from natural disasters to 9/11, from thesis hatements to professional sports, these essays find the unpopular across media and genres, and they analyze the politics and the aesthetics of an unpopular culture (and the unpopular in culture) that has not been duly recognized as such by the theories and methods of cultural studies. Martin Lüthe is an associate professor in North American Cultural Studies at the John F. Kennedy-Institute at Freie Universität Berlin. BAD 67 ALCHEMY 1 Martin Büsser gewidmet 1968 - 2010 2 WHAT A DIFFERENCE A NIGHT MAKES Ah, Serenade kommt tatsächlich von sereno. -

Disposable Underground 42
Volume 18 Number 42 FREE Championing the musically jaded for over 15 years DISPOSABLE LOCAL REVIEWS A grouping of the local bands (from Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, DC) for this issue point out, D.U. classes Misery Index as a grindcore band. Look at the covers appearing Condemn the Infected Demo here as evidence: Disrupt, Minor Threat, Napalm Death, Terrorizer. And there’s more to his three-song CD-R delivers the death metal goods. Want guttural and raspy look at with this release: all of the lyrics from the EPs and splits, a gig list through 2009 vocals? Want technical guitars and artificial harmonics? Want fusion bass chords? (when they put this baby out), and live tracks. Essential for any Misery Index fan, and TTons of riffs per song? How about blast beats and double bass? You got all that here. it’s damn good for anybody into intelligent death grind, if you want to call it that. There’s a bit of Suffocation, a bit of Morbid Angel, and various other proper death metal www.miseryindex.com bands to draw influence from. The third track, “Passages to Perdition,” has a neato drum intro, and the rest of the music on this demo is similarly impressive. It’s how they do in Maryland. Permafrost Demo 2011 www.myspace.com/condemntheinfected If these guys are death metal, then they’re “blackened” death metal, which if we’re correct means DM with a BM influence. Death metal vocals mingle with blast beats, black metal-esque riffs, and shaky production values, but there’s some interesting ideas Druglord 2010 demo on Demo 2011 , for example the slow, crunchy riff on top of a blast on “Shiva.”And Their Facebook info tab reads, “3 old punks from back in the day (early 80s) playing while Virginia’s Permafrost is low on presentation on their four-song demo, they’re high loud, slow, bass drenched metal.” The band isn’t bass drenched so much, but it’s on positive mental attitude. -

Each month, Loud unearths some of the loudest, crudest, weirdest, and/or heaviest sounds writhing beneath the surface. The world’s not getting any quieter. Neither should we. Stream of the month: Dwarves , The Dwarves Are Born Again Since the Dwarves’ 1990 masterpiece of perversion, Blood Guts & Pussy , the band has manipulated its scabrous punk formula to varying degrees of offensiveness. But founders Blag Dahlia and HeWhoCannotBeNamed have convened the group for the new, aptly titled The Dwarves Are Born Again . It’s the best album the band has made in years; crude yet catchy (and not above flinging yet more jokes about sluts and AIDS), Born Again may not reinvent anything—but it shows that the Dwarves still know how to shit out potent loads of disgusting fun.
