  • Frank Buckley Walker
Frank Buckley Walker Columbia Records Old-Time Music Talent Scout Frank Buckley Walker (1889 – 1963) was the Artist and Repertoire (A & R) talent scout for Columbia Records’ Country Music Division during the 1920s and 1930s. Along with Ralph Peer of Victor Records, Walker mastered the technique of field recordings. Specializing in southern roots music, Walker set up remote recording studios in cities such as Atlanta, New Orleans, Memphis, Dallas, Little Rock and Johnson City searching for amateur musical talent. The fascinating interview below with Frank Buckley Walker was done by Mike Seeger on June 19, 1962. The interview provides insight into the early era of recorded music as well as the evolution of country music as a market segment. Frank Buckley Walker June 19, 1962 The Seeger-Walker Interview MS (Mike Seeger): I was noticing this Jaw’s Harp, or Jew’s Harp on your desk here…… FW (Frank Walker): Jew’s Harp is what they call it. It’s an old one. And you were telling me it dates back to your early days, where was it, Fly…? Fly Summit, New York on a farm. Fly Summit was a metropolis. It had about four or five houses, a church, a baling machine, and one little store. We lived on a farm about a mile away from there. And the Jew’s Harp - that played an important part because it was the only thing I could play other than the 1 harmonica. But it did get me a few pennies here and there for playing for some sorts of entertainment we had amongst the farmers.

  • Hipster Black Metal?
Hipster Black Metal? Deafheaven’s Sunbather and the Evolution of an (Un) popular Genre Paola Ferrero A couple of months ago a guy walks into a bar in Brooklyn and strikes up a conversation with the bartenders about heavy metal. The guy happens to mention that Deafheaven, an up-and-coming American black metal (BM) band, is going to perform at Saint Vitus, the local metal concert venue, in a couple of weeks. The bartenders immediately become confrontational, denying Deafheaven the BM ‘label of authenticity’: the band, according to them, plays ‘hipster metal’ and their singer, George Clarke, clearly sports a hipster hairstyle. Good thing they probably did not know who they were talking to: the ‘guy’ in our story is, in fact, Jonah Bayer, a contributor to Noisey, the music magazine of Vice, considered to be one of the bastions of hipster online culture. The product of that conversation, a piece entitled ‘Why are black metal fans such elitist assholes?’ was almost certainly intended as a humorous nod to the ongoing debate, generated mainly by music webzines and their readers, over Deafheaven’s inclusion in the BM canon. The article features a promo picture of the band, two young, clean- shaven guys, wearing indistinct clothing, with short haircuts and mild, neutral facial expressions, their faces made to look like they were ironically wearing black and white make up, the typical ‘corpse-paint’ of traditional, early BM. It certainly did not help that Bayer also included a picture of Inquisition, a historical BM band from Colombia formed in the early 1990s, and ridiculed their corpse-paint and black cloaks attire with the following caption: ‘Here’s what you’re defending, black metal purists.

Reviews : Albums : Gorguts, "Considered Dead [reissue]" Gorguts Considered Dead [reissue] Metal Mind Records 2007 REVIEW LINKS Email the reviewer Email this review to a friend DISCUSS THIS REVIEW Ye Gods, I am old. I am displeased that this CD reminds me of this wretched truth. Has it been 16 years since this first rocked my world? I was supposed to see these guys with Atheist and Cannibal Corpse once, but the club didn't let in anyone under eighteen at the time so I could not go. Also it was in a bad neighborhood, Velociraptors and Tyrannosaurus Rex on every block. Most of them were on drugs to boot. Luckily the day of the drug crazed dinosaur has passed and we are threatened only by a lot of other things. Enough of my senile recollections, let the metal geezer get this review out before Alzheimer's robs me of the ability to know what in the hell I'm talking about. I loved this album back in the day, although I don't listen to a ton anymore. It is however an interesting contrast to the last two albums Gorguts did. Before every French-Canadian became a god with a musical instrument or a hockey stick. It used to be they only did hockey. This might be the album where that really started to change, although Voivod had been working the province for quite some time. This was a decent record, even at the time. This is more mid-paced to slow as opposed to the faster stuff I prefer.

Proposing a third term that operates beyond the dichotomy of high culture and mass culture and yet offers a fresh approach to both, these essays address a multitude of different topics that can all be classified as unpopular culture. From David Foster Wallace and Ernest Hemingway to Zane Grey, from Christian rock and country to clack cetal, from Steven Seagal to Genesis (Breyer) P-Orridge, from K-pop to The Real Housewives, from natural disasters to 9/11, from thesis hatements to professional sports, these essays find the unpopular across media and genres, and they analyze the politics and the aesthetics of an unpopular culture (and the unpopular in culture) that has not been duly recognized as such by the theories and methods of cultural studies. In doing so, this thesis purports that these films interrogate psychoanalytic concepts such as the gaze, the big Other, and the death drive. This study posits themes, philosophies, and formal elements within J-Horror films that place the undead subject within a worldly depiction of the afterlife, the films repeatedly ending on an image of an emptied-out Japan invisible to the big Other’s gaze.
