Countdown to December 1, 2019 “On this Day in History” for Johnson City, Tennessee’s Sesquicentennial December On December 1, 1869, Johnson City “received its first charter from the state of Tennessee under the name of Johnson City.” (Source: Greater Johnson City A Pictorial History.) On December 2, 1978, the Statler Brothers appeared with Barbara Mandrel at Freedom Hall. Tickets ranged in price from $5.50 to $7.50. On December 3, 1978, Dorothy Hamill reported in her column that the old Science Hill High School would soon be torn down. (Source: Johnson City Press-Chronicle.) On December 4, 1984, an article in the Johnson City Press-Chronicle reported that recently, a day’s tobacco sales at Big Burley, Grower’s Co-Op, and Young’s Warehouse brought tobacco growers more than $1 million. On December 5, 1907, children’s letters to Santa Claus, as printed in The Comet, an early Johnson City weekly newspaper, reveals their wishes for such Christmas goodies as fruit, oranges, nuts and other foods. Whereas the recordings made in Bristol and Johnson City were almost exclusively of old-time country and gospel music, the Knoxville sessions captured a more diverse gathering of Appalachian voices and sounds. Pete Seeger, Songwriter and Champion of Folk Music, Dies at 94 By Jon Pareles, The New York Times, 1/28 Pete Seeger, the singer, folk-song collector and songwriter who spearheaded an American folk revival and spent a long career championing folk music as both a vital heritage and a catalyst for social change, died Monday. He was 94 and lived in Beacon, N.Y. His death was confirmed by his grandson, Kitama Cahill Jackson, who said he died of natural causes at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. Mr. Seeger’s career carried him from singing at labor rallies to the Top 10 to college auditoriums to folk festivals, and from a conviction for contempt of Congress (after defying the House Un-American Activities Committee in the 1950s) to performing on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial at an inaugural concert for Barack Obama. 1 / 13 Pete Seeger, Songwriter and Champion of Folk Music, Dies at 94 For Mr. Seeger, folk music and a sense of community were inseparable, and where he saw a community, he saw the possibility of political action. In his hearty tenor, Mr. Seeger, a beanpole of a man who most often played 12-string guitar or five-string banjo, sang topical songs and children’s songs, humorous tunes and earnest anthems, always encouraging listeners to join in. His agenda paralleled the concerns of the American left: He sang for the labor movement in the 1940s and 1950s, for civil rights marches and anti-Vietnam War rallies in the 1960s, and for environmental and antiwar causes in the 1970s and beyond. -

The Banjo NEWSLETTER Old-Time Way Review, April 2014 Johnson City Recordings, Bear Family CDs By Timothy Jones Some recordings are important more than they are listenable. Lower-tech sound quality, by-gone vocal styles, and primitive instrumental playing can make some early releases an acquired taste. "The Johnson City Sessions, 1928-1929: Can You Sing or Play Old-Time Music?" might fit into that category. But among the 100 cuts of the new four-CD boxed set from Bear Family Records are riches and rough-cut gems. It's important to note for readers of this publication that only a quarter of the tracks contain banjo (not counting the occasional mandolin-banjo). Still, in the five hours of music here, to say nothing of the accompanying hardcover book, there is much to inform and interest old-time listeners and banjo players. The earlier, better-known 1927 Bristol (TN) sessions sponsored by Victor Records helped launch the likes of Jimmie Rodgers and the Carter Family, and in 2011 those sessions likewise saw release in an acclaimed Bear Family boxed set. Now, with this late-2013 release, the recordings made for Columbia Records in nearby Johnson City in 1928 and 1929 capture another slice of Southern music from the late 1920s. The title, "Can You Sing or Play Old-Time Music," comes from the lead line in an October 1928 newspaper ad calling area musicians to participate in "an actual try-out for the purpose of making Columbia Records." The ad got wide exposure, and come they did-from neighboring counties and several states around Tennessee. -
Pete Seeger: a Singer of Folk Songs
LINGUACULTURE 2, 2020 PETE SEEGER: A SINGER OF FOLK SONGS DAVID LIVINGSTONE Palacký University Abstract Pete Seeger would have turned one hundred and one on May 3 of this year. To commemorate these ten decades plus one year, I would like to look at eleven of the most remarkable aspects of Pete Seeger’s life, work and legacy. This paper will examine the cultural impact and oral tradition of the music, songs and books of Pete Seeger. This legendary folk musician's career spanned eight decades and touched on many of the key historical developments of the day. He is responsible for some of the iconic songs which have not only helped define American culture, but even beyond. Seeger was also a pioneer in a number of fields, using his music to propagate political convictions, ecological themes, civil rights, world music, education, etc. The folk singer also had his finger on the pulse of a number of developments in American history and culture. He was friends with a number of prominent musicians and artists and influenced an entire range of younger musicians and activists. Keywords: Pete Seeger; Folk music; American history; Social activism; Civil Rights movement Family Pete Seeger’ family was a powerhouse of talent, musically and beyond. Charles Seeger (1886-1979), his father, was a renowned musicologist who held a number of prominent university positions. His political convictions, obviously on the left, were also instrumental in forming his son’s ideological worldview. His mother Constance de Clyver (1886-1975) was also a musician although not as accomplished by far as his stepmother Ruth Seeger (1901-1953) (mother to Mike and Peggy). -

Vanderbilt University, 1997 Committee Chair: Dr. bruce d. mcclung 2 ABSTRACT Peggy Seeger’s family lineage is indeed impressive: daughter of composers and scholars Charles and Ruth Crawford Seeger, sister of folk icons Mike and Pete Seeger, and widow of British folksinger and playwright Ewan MacColl. Although this intensely musical genealogy inspired and affirmed Seeger’s professional life, it has also tended to obscure her own remarkable achievements. The goal of the first part of this study is to explore Peggy Seeger’s own history, including but not limited to her life within America’s first family of folk music. Seeger’s story is distinct from that of her family and even from that of most folksingers in her generation. The second part of the thesis concerns Seeger’s contributions to feminism through her songwriting, studies, and activism. -

FREIGHT TRAINS Upside Down Guitars the The Lost Little Girl “There is no greater agony than hiding an untold story inside you.” Maya Angelou It was a warm summer afternoon in Carrboro, North Carolina. The little house on Lloyd Street was near a railroad track, and the constant rumbling of the massive trains filled the eleven year old girl with visions of leaving that mountain town and seeing the world. The train passed by her with a rhythm, a motion, a beckoning that called to her. It made her want to jump up, run to the track and hop on that big black monster and ride it as far as it would take her. But she was only eleven. And from a poor home. She was the baby of the family and her four older brothers and sisters all had to work, scraping along for every dime and dollar they could muster to keep the family fed, a roof over their heads and a warm bed to sleep in. Dreams were a luxury that a poor young black girl from a 140 sleepy Appalachian town could not afford to dwell on because “hopes” are like demons to a little girl with no future. As most poor families did in 1907, they depended on simple things for entertainment, like music on the front porch. A few years ago her brother showed her some chords on his banjo. She got quite good at it and by the time she was eight she was playing several songs. Music became her comfort, singing became her escape. -
