Day 1 Airport - Kandy: About 5 Hours Drive Kandy House Having arrived in Sri Lanka you will be greeted by both our Jetwing representative and your chauffeur guide at the airport itself. Take a leisurely drive to the Kingdom of Kandy. Relish the scenic journey as you pass the paddy fields of the low country towards the city of Kandy. Along the way you will be passing sites of interest such as the Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage - depending on your flight timing you are welcome to drop by and visit these places. Once in Kandy find yourself surrounded by rolling green forests and listen for the trickle of rivers. At the comforts of the cozy private home of Kandy House, relax and recover from any jet lag. You will find that each of the rooms and suites are individually designed and this is why each is anointed a different name. In fact, he had committed an act of defiance as he dared to build himself a palatial villa using roof tiles which at that time were decreed only for use on royal residences. As of recent times, Geoffrey Bawa’s protégé Channa Daswatte was engaged on a similar mission of daring: to retain all the charisma of this captivating house while bringing it up to the standard of luxury befitting 21st century guests. The resulting restoration is your residence, The Kandy House. Do steal some time in the day to stroll through the over 60 hectares Royal Peradeniya Botanical Gardens on the outskirts of Kandy city. Prior to the arrival of the British in Sri Lanka his was a royal park and it is today the largest botanical garden in the nation. There is a fine collection of orchids and a stately avenue of royal palms that were planted in 1905. If you would like your chauffeur guide we will help you organize a surprise picnic lunch or tea at the gardens. Kandy is also well known as the centre of Buddhism. Set out in the afternoon to a meditation and yoga centre for a private session practicing various asana. Next, become acquainted with the city of Kandy, paying your respects to the Temple of the Tooth Relic, which houses Sri Lanka’s most sacred relic, a tooth of the Lord Buddha. The Temple itself dates from the 16th century and is entered via 2 doors showing mythical beasts. To step up the tempo, attend a dance performance featuring traditional dances from the different regions of Sri Lanka. Day 4 Kandy – Nuwara Eliya: About 3.5 Hours Drive Jetwing Warwick Gardens Take a scenic three hours drive to Nuwara Eliya, specifically the Warwick Estate. During the drive, relish the endless views of tea carpeted valleys, processing factories belching out fragrant aromas and the bright flash of female "tea pluckers" in their pimento, fuchsia and cerise saris picking their way through the plantations. Break your journey at a local tea factory for a tour and a cup of freshly brewed Ceylon tea. Continue on your route and follow the trail until you will arrive at a cozy colonial bungalow restored from the time of the Raj. You will be greeted by your personal butler Robert who will attend to you throughout your stay as well as the chef with whom you can plan your dining options. We invite you to explore this century old Nuwara Eliya bungalow that has been brought back to life. Spend a lazy day at this home away from home and feel free to dine outdoors in the open air. Enjoy a morning head massage or a cool walk through the fruit orchard, pick your own vegetables or perhaps enjoy a fresh garden salad. For lunch we recommend you drop into the Nuwara Eliya town at the colonial member’s only Hill Club, which adhere to a strict formal dress code. If you wish to play an evening game at the town’s 18-hole golf course or taking a stroll to admire the English styled country homes with well manicured gardens. Having worked up an appetite, taste a mouth watering mountain barbequeback at Warwick Gardens. Day 6 Nuwara Eliya – Horton Plains – Nuwara Eliya: About 3 Hours Drive Jetwing Warwick Gardens For some breathtaking vista set out first thing in the morning before the mist covers to the nearby National Park of Horton Plains. Formerly the hunting grounds of the British Raj, Horton Plains forms an undulating plateau over 2,000 metres high and it is a beautiful area of grasslands, interspersed with patches of forest. One of Horton Plain’s most panoramic views is over a spectacular escarpment known as World's End, which drops a sheer 1,219 metres. Another attraction is the graceful Baker’s waterfall which resembles white sari drapes falling off from the mountains. Return to Warwick Gardens for a late lunch and spend the evening relaxing. Day 8 Wadduwa: At leisure The Reef Marvel at the raw beauty of Sri Lanka’s coast, spending the day carefree. Even an evening walk through pass the pond is quite enchanting.     UNDERSTANDING PRESS COVERAGE ON RELIGIOUS FREEDOM 1 UNDERSTANDING PRESS COVERAGE ON RELIGIOUS FREEDOM INTRODUCTION Ethno-religious violence has been a growing problem in post-war Sri Lanka. Events in Mawanella (2001),1 Gintota (2017),2 Aluthgama (2014)3 and most recently in Digana (2018)4 demonstrate the extent and frequency of this type of violence. This report is the fourth in a series of reports prepared by Verité Research (VR) for Minor Matters. These reports examine how the print media reports on religious freedom in Sri Lanka. They aim to analyse the frequency and tonality of coverage in various newspapers in English, Sinhala and Tamil to provide both quantitative and qualitative insights. The press coverage is assessed by observing press articles in terms of their sentiment on religious freedom, i.e. supporting, neutral or opposing. This sentiment analysis is based on an assessment of two components: a) news grading, in which the substance of the news article/content is analysed, and b) view grading, in which the tonality of the coverage, pictures, and any other additional cues used to position sentiment regarding the news item, are analysed. The present report also qualitatively analyses articles related to religious freedom within the context of broader themes such as physical violence towards people and property; inflammatory speech; court cases, laws and regulations pertaining to religious freedom; religious inequality and discrimination; and other related reporting relevant to religious freedom. Overlooking the historic temple of the tooth relic, the Kandy Lake and town the house is built on Hilpankandura mount. A tea estate flourished above the house, and the area was formally known as the Roseneith Estate. Now famous as Wakarawatte or Walkers estate the tea estate is overgrown into a forest. Wakarawatte is the eastern extension of Hantana range. The Kandy House is the last frontier against the wilderness of the then Roseneith Estate. Perched on the mount it overlooks the Kandy Lake and dominates the green clad mountain. A lone road leads to the house passing a majestic gateway heralding the first indication of domestication. The road terminates where the forest starts. The setting is of a final human stronghold before the mountain disappears and is subjugated by thick foliage.

    Coordinates: 07°16′55″N 80°32′27″E Campaign of Danture The Danture campaign comprised a series of encounters Campaign of Danture 1594 between the Portuguese and the Kingdom of Kandy in 1594, part of the Sinhalese–Portuguese War. It is considered a turning point Date 5 July 1594 – 9 October 1594 in the indigenous resistance to Portuguese expansion. For the (3 months and 4 days) first time in Sri Lanka a Portuguese army was essentially Location Danture, Kingdom of Kandy annihilated, when they were on the verge of the total conquest of 07°16′55″N 80°32′27″E [11] the island. A 20,000-strong Portuguese army, led by Result Decisive Kandyan victory Governor Pedro Lopes de Sousa, invaded Kandy on 5 July 1594. After three months, severely depleted by guerilla warfare and Belligerents mass desertions, what remained of the Portuguese army was Portuguese Empire Kingdom of Kandy annihilated at Danture by the Kandyans under King Vimaladharmasuriya.
