Historically, Myanmar, like many parts of the world was fought over by European and Asian powers, until it was colonized by Britain in 1885 after the 2nd Anglo- Burmese War. It would not get its definitive independence until 1948. Fundamentally Buddhist, 89% of the population profess this religion. It is said that here, people enjoy the pleasure of gratifying the visitor. Burma has been ruled by a military dictatorship since 1964. In 2011, the military junta was officially dissolved following a 2010 general election, and a nominally civilian government was installed. Naypyidaw became the capital in 2005. www.theasiancontinent.com 7 Myanmar Destinies Myanmar Myanmar Putao Mandalay Monywa Hsipaw Maymyo Bagan Pindaya Kyaing Tong Kalaw Inle Mrauk-u Naypyidaw Ngapali Beach Kyaiktiyo Bago Yangon 8 Destinies Myanmar Yangon The most important city of the country: with 5 million inhabitants and located in the south, near the Gulf of Martaban, Yangon is the most important city of Burma. It was the capital until recent years. Besides the large number of temples and pagodas, the Shwedagon Pagoda stands out on all of them, which is visible from many parts of the city, and also the Sule Pagoda. The city has the Scott Market, where you can find many varieties of food, clothing, crafts... Bagan Considered one of the highest concentrations of temples and Buddhist pagodas in the world, with more than 2000, the city of Bagan, previously called Pagan, was destroyed by the troops of the Mongol emperor Kublai Khan in 1287, finally being abandoned. Washed by the Ayeyarwaddy River, which crosses the country from the north, the best examples of its architectural greatness are the temples of Swezigon, Dhammangyi and Ananda. Lago Inle In the heart of Burma, Inle Lake is a place to rest quietly and enjoy nature, and is characterized by its unique floating villages and fishermen, who can row a boat with the help of a leg. Mandalay The capital of the country until 1886, Mandalay is the second largest city, after Yangon. Its commercial importance, as well as its rich culture, makes it a must- visit destination for all visitors to the country. There are unforgettable landscapes like the image of the U Bein teak bridge, or the Mingun pagoda... always with the strong presence of the River Ayeyawaddy which flows from North to South through Myanmar. www.theasiancontinent.com 9 Myanmar Programs Myanmar essence A tour by the best of Myanmar: The magical Bagan and the spectacular Inle Lake. • Buddhism and Aesthetic Creativity
Buddhism and Aesthetic Creativity By Ananda W.P. Guruge ABSTRACT Buddhism, just as other world Religions, has inspired a legacy of the finest and the most beautiful creations in architecture, painting, sculpture, statuary, and prose and poetic literature. In tracing the origin and the development of this magnificent legacy, this paper seeks answers to the following questions: How is it that the earliest reliably datable monuments and works of art including written records, hitherto discovered in the Indian Subcontinent, happen to be of Buddhist origin? How is it also that a vast literary movement in which poetry and story-telling figure prominently start with the Buddha setting new standards and directions? What role did the Buddha and his teachings play in this enigmatic revival of aesthetic creativityin the Indian Subcontinent and its extension to the rest of Asia and its continuance to present times? It is done in three Parts. In the first Part, the canonical texts in Pali are analyzed for evidence on how the Buddha personally inspired and took the initiative to promote aesthetic creativity. It has been possible to unravel that the Buddha did consciously resort to the highest standards of poetic expression in literature and also encouraged significant innovations in art and architecture. The second Part examines how Buddhism as it developed in stature as a religious system and spread within and outside the Indian Subcontinent promoted aesthetic creativity in practically every domain of art. Especially noted is how Mahayana Buddhism had a popular appeal and played a very significant role in this process. The third Part is a brief but extensive survey of the marvels and masterpieces of the vast Buddhist cultural heritage.

J. W. De Jong Was Mahayana ever in Sri Lanka? What evidence is available for its historical existence? If one wants to study Mahayana in Sri Lanka, what sources will one use? What are the strengths and weaknesses of available sources? Giving a supreme authority to 'texts' as suggested by DE JONG,1 should one rely only on written texts? If Sri Lankan literary sources, for example, the two Pali chronicles, the DTpavamsa and the Mahdvamsa, had distorted the actual facts - or, in other words, if they had misrepresented the actual events related to Mahayana as a religious movement - what are we going to do with them? If literary sources are distorted, what alternative sources will one use for one's research? With holding DE JONG's claim because of obvious limitations,2 in this paper, I examine only one alternative source - a few relevant Sri Lankan sculp tures - for the study of Mahayana in Sri Lanka.

  • Understanding Press Coverage on Religious Freedom
UNDERSTANDING PRESS COVERAGE ON RELIGIOUS FREEDOM 1 UNDERSTANDING PRESS COVERAGE ON RELIGIOUS FREEDOM INTRODUCTION Ethno-religious violence has been a growing problem in post-war Sri Lanka. Events in Mawanella (2001),1 Gintota (2017),2 Aluthgama (2014)3 and most recently in Digana (2018)4 demonstrate the extent and frequency of this type of violence. This report is the fourth in a series of reports prepared by Verité Research (VR) for Minor Matters. These reports examine how the print media reports on religious freedom in Sri Lanka. They aim to analyse the frequency and tonality of coverage in various newspapers in English, Sinhala and Tamil to provide both quantitative and qualitative insights. The press coverage is assessed by observing press articles in terms of their sentiment on religious freedom, i.e. supporting, neutral or opposing. This sentiment analysis is based on an assessment of two components: a) news grading, in which the substance of the news article/content is analysed, and b) view grading, in which the tonality of the coverage, pictures, and any other additional cues used to position sentiment regarding the news item, are analysed. The present report also qualitatively analyses articles related to religious freedom within the context of broader themes such as physical violence towards people and property; inflammatory speech; court cases, laws and regulations pertaining to religious freedom; religious inequality and discrimination; and other related reporting relevant to religious freedom. Newspaper summaries that have a bearing on religious freedom are listed in chronological order at the end of the report. 1 G.H. Peiris, A reappraisal of evidence and claims.
