Since his Bayreuth Festival debut in 2000,Thielemann has established himself as one of the world's leading Wagner conductors. Among the vocal surprises of this live recording is Adrian Eröd as Beckmesser. Eröd is on a par with the great Wagner baritone Falk Struckmann as Hans Sachs, who injects earthy humour into his role while building a tender rapport with Ricarda Merbeth's Eva.As Walther von Stolzing, Johan Botha is pure tenor gold. WAGNER SOCIETY nsw ISSUE NO 3 CELEBRATING THE MUSIC OF RICHARD WAGNER WAGNER QUARTERLY 130 SEPTEMBER 2013 IN MEMORIAM Joseph Ferfoglia (c. 1923-2012) – long-time honorary auditor for the Society – see Swan Lines. PRESIDENT’S REPORT Welcome to the third Wagner Quarterly for 2013. I have to confess that I have missed some of our Society’s more recent events, as I have taken my Wagner enthusiasm overseas. I am really sorry not to have attended these events, as on all accounts they have been outstandingly successful. Some fifty people, including her Excellency the Governor, attended the Dutchman seminar. This is described later in this Quarterly, as are the Lisa Gasteen meeting, the “Swords and Winterstorms” concert, and the more recent Neil Armfield talk, which I believe was fascinating. In June this year, I was fortunate enough to attend Ring Cycles in Riga, Milan and Longborough. And in August I went to the third and last cycle of the new Ring production Multiple multi-coloured Masters by Ottmar Hörl capering over in Bayreuth. Unfortunately, because of the decisions relating Bayreuth: Is he welcoming visitors or shooing us away? 300€ at to ticket allocations, there were many fewer Sydneysiders www.Bayreuth-shop.de in Bayreuth than in previous years. But a small ray of hope on this issue remains. In November the matter will again be The Riga Opera House is a jewel of a 19th century opera discussed at a meeting house at one end of a park which divides the mediaeval of the Administrative section of the city from the modern city.

In Memoriam Barbara McNulty OBE - see inside for obituary NEWSFLASH: Melbourne to stage a Ring Cycle - at last! It’s Official! - see report inside. President’s Report Welcome to our third Newsletter for 2010. Once, when we sat together for a performance of L’elisir d’amour (the production with fake corrugated iron sheep on Barbara McNulty wheels), Barbara warned me that as she didn’t often attend Members and friends of our Society would have been the opera with a male handbag, there could be comment saddened by the news of Barbara McNulty’s death on on the platform. Sure enough, we were approached by 31 July. My thanks to our editor, Dr Terence Watson, for several of her acquaintances who said “And this must be compiling the fine tribute and obituary which appears in this your son!” After that I took to calling her “Mother” and Newsletter. she would respond “My son, my son” (because, apparently, From a personal viewpoint, my fondest memories of Barbara there was enough of me to make two sons.) Barbara rarely came during the latter period of her presidency of the left a performance early, no matter how vile, and we drained Society, when we dealt with the difficult consequences of this insufferable Elixir to the last drop. (I would much rather fraud by a longstanding and trusted committee member. I have repaired to “Aria” for solace and soufflé but stayed have no doubt that our Society’s survival at that time was instead with Barbara.) I didn’t believe her when she said that due to Barbara’s personal integrity.

No pause. The Story The dwarf Alberich forsakes love so that he may steal the Rhine’s gold. A ring is crafted from that gold, invested with great power. When the ring is taken from Alberich, he places on it a terrible curse. The god Wotan is tempted by ownership of the ring – but heeds a dire warning from the goddess Erda. Instead, Wotan uses the ring to pay the giants Fafner and Fasolt for building his palace Valhalla. Alberich’s curse takes immediate effect: Fafner kills Fasolt so that he may keep the ring for himself. Background Das Rheingold is the ‘preliminary evening’ of Richard Wagner’s four-opera cycle Der Ring des Nibelungen. The shortest of the four, it introduces the characters that will drive this magnificent drama to its epic conclusion, and the musical themes that Wagner ingeniously develops through the cycle. Robert Lepage returned to direct the highly anticipated company premiere of Thomas Adès’s The Tempest, with the composer on the podium.
