THURSDAY, JANUARY 17, 2019 REGIONAL SIRES FOR 2019 CANADIAN OWNER/BREEDER BILL GRAHAM PASSES AWAY By Perry Lefko The Canadian Thoroughbred horse racing community is mourning the passing of Bill Graham, a larger than life figure in the industry as a prominent owner, breeder and builder in various capacities. He passed away Tuesday at 81-years-old following a battle with lung cancer. Graham, a burly individual who played three seasons as an offensive lineman in the Canadian Football League, had been involved in the business for almost 50 years. He was inducted into the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame in 2014 and was scheduled to receive the E.P. Taylor Award of Merit at this year's Sovereign Awards along with fellow breeder/owner Gus Schickedanz for their lifelong dedication and commitment to Thoroughbred racing and breeding in Canada. • Keeneland Pedigree Nick Review: Identifying Thoroughbred Mares Carrying Foals with Promise
Given its discriminating qualities, the TrueNicks pedigree rating system creates Keeneland opportunities for owners and breeders – both commercial and breed-to-race – by iden- tifying prospects whose promising pedigrees might not be immediately apparent. Pedigree Nick Savvy horsemen use TrueNicks to create their “short lists” of promising hips at a Thoroughbred sale. This approach is straightforward at yearling auctions, where each Review: subject horse has only one rating – but it is more interesting, and indeed it can become more profitable, when applied to mares offered at breeding stock sales. With in-foal broodmares, it is possible not only to assess the quality of the previous foals that the Identifying mare has produced, but also to compare the siblings’ ratings with the rating of her carried foal, to judge if the mare has received her fair chance at stud. She may be sit- Thoroughbred ting on a couple of recent foals that could give her a chance to shine in coming years. Mares Carrying For Keeneland’s January breeding stock sale, the team at TrueNicks identified sev- eral broodmares whose produce records revealed promising patterns, based on the Foals with nick ratings of their previous and current matings. Starting from the full sales catalog, we refined the list of mares for research to what Promise we considered the most commercially vulnerable – some might say risky – broodmare prospects. The mares we selected had from three to six foals, with the eldest ranging from 3 to 6 years old. These mares have had only one or two foals that have given them a live chance to be recognized as producers.

1/ST BET // WAGER GUIDE KENTUCKY DERBY MAY01/2021 CHURCHILL DOWNS MEET THE 2021 DERBY CONTENDERS By Johnny D., @XBJohnnyD ESSENTIAL QUALITY: Unbeaten in five career starts, this son of Tapit is the defending Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner and reigning 2-year-old champ. He’s also the current consensus pick as top 3-year-old. This Brad Cox-trained colt has done everything right in two 2021 starts. He romped home in the Grade 3 Southwest at Oaklawn Park and then out-fought a game, pace scenario- aided Highly Motivated at Keeneland to win the Grade 2 Blue Grass by a neck. He races a bit off the pace early, but can quickly reach contention when prompted. He has won by as much as four and one-quarter lengths and by as little as a neck. Last September, he broke his maiden first time out going six furlongs at Churchill Downs, so you know he likes the track. Jockey Luis Saez seeks redemption aboard this colt for the disappointment and criticism the rider endured following the disqualification of his mount Maximum Security from first to 17th in the 2019 Kentucky Derby. Trainer Brad Cox won last season’s Eclipse Award as the nation’s top trainer. HOT ROD CHARLIE: Ever since stretching out to two turns on the main track and adding blinkers, this son of Preakness winner Oxbow has been a tiger. His first race under those particular circumstances came in the fourth start of his career and resulted in a one-mile maiden score at Santa Anita in October.

Both had started out in a regional program, having shown only marginal eligibility for a stud career on the racetrack, before quickly earning migration to Kentucky. If that was just about all they had in common, then their different roles on two of the biggest commercial rosters will have made the exit of both deeply grievous for their respective farms.

This report includes information about revenue, award payments, research funding, promotional spending and operational improvements to the Fund during the past year. New York’s reputation as the home of world-class Thoroughbred horses continues to be bolstered by the Fund’s efforts. The Empire State is now the sought-after home for stallions from Kentucky, California and the rest of the country. Additionally, horses competing in New York are being claimed at unprecedented rates. The debut of Resorts World Casino New York City at Aqueduct in October marked a significant highlight for the Fund and the industry, which directly benefit from revenue generated by video lottery terminals (VLTs).

IRISH SURF A track-record breaking graded stakes winner, Irish Surf is by three-time Leading Sire, Giant’s Causeway. The outstanding son of Storm Cat, both as a racehorse and sire, Giant’s Causeway is now a major sire of sires, with eight of his sons having sired grade one winners. Irish Surf’s dam, Champion Three-Year-Old Filly Surfside, is by Seattle Slew out of Champion Two-Year- Old Filly Flanders, and is three-quarters sister to grade one sire Flanders Fields. The cross of Giant's Causeway and sons with Mr. Prospector line mares has been a tremendously successful one, with more than 150 stakes winners. Irish Surf’s second dam is a Champion by Mr. Prospector son, Seeking the Gold, and as Giant’s Causeway sired Champion Two-year-old Filly Take Charge Brandi out of a mare by Seeking the Gold, duplicating that strain is worth considering. Sources of Seeking the Gold that particularly appeal are Mutakddim and Cape Town (both reverse crosses to Surfside). There are seven stakes winners, two grade one, by Giant’s Causeway out mares by Kingmambo, and there are also four stakes winners, one grade one out of mares by Kingmambo son, Lemon Drop Kid, a reverse cross to Surfside.
