Given its discriminating qualities, the TrueNicks pedigree rating system creates Keeneland opportunities for owners and breeders – both commercial and breed-to-race – by iden- tifying prospects whose promising pedigrees might not be immediately apparent. Pedigree Nick Savvy horsemen use TrueNicks to create their “short lists” of promising hips at a Thoroughbred sale. This approach is straightforward at yearling auctions, where each Review: subject horse has only one rating – but it is more interesting, and indeed it can become more profitable, when applied to mares offered at breeding stock sales. With in-foal broodmares, it is possible not only to assess the quality of the previous foals that the Identifying mare has produced, but also to compare the siblings’ ratings with the rating of her carried foal, to judge if the mare has received her fair chance at stud. Starting from the full sales catalog, we refined the list of mares for research to what Promise we considered the most commercially vulnerable – some might say risky – broodmare prospects. For the day, 189 horses brought a total of $11,372,500, compared with 186 horses selling for a total of $7,533,000 at last year’s opening session. The average price was $60,172, soaring 48.6% from $40,500 last year while the median price was $37,000, rising 48% compared with $25,000 a year ago. The buyback percentage was 18.9%; it was 20.2% last year. Thirty-four horses sold for $100,000 or more compared with 14 in 2012. The top sellers went late in the sale Monday with Hip Num- ber 292 topping the ledger at $320,000 from the consignment of Dr. Barry Eisaman’s Eisaman Equine, Agent. He’s also the current consensus pick as top 3-year-old. This Brad Cox-trained colt has done everything right in two 2021 starts. He romped home in the Grade 3 Southwest at Oaklawn Park and then out-fought a game, pace scenario- aided Highly Motivated at Keeneland to win the Grade 2 Blue Grass by a neck. He races a bit off the pace early, but can quickly reach contention when prompted. He has won by as much as four and one-quarter lengths and by as little as a neck. Last September, he broke his maiden first time out going six furlongs at Churchill Downs, so you know he likes the track. Jockey Luis Saez seeks redemption aboard this colt for the disappointment and criticism the rider endured following the disqualification of his mount Maximum Security from first to 17th in the 2019 Kentucky Derby. IRISH SURF A track-record breaking graded stakes winner, Irish Surf is by three-time Leading Sire, Giant’s Causeway. The outstanding son of Storm Cat, both as a racehorse and sire, Giant’s Causeway is now a major sire of sires, with eight of his sons having sired grade one winners. Irish Surf’s dam, Champion Three-Year-Old Filly Surfside, is by Seattle Slew out of Champion Two-Year- Old Filly Flanders, and is three-quarters sister to grade one sire Flanders Fields. The cross of Giant's Causeway and sons with Mr. Prospector line mares has been a tremendously successful one, with more than 150 stakes winners. Irish Surf’s second dam is a Champion by Mr. Prospector son, Seeking the Gold, and as Giant’s Causeway sired Champion Two-year-old Filly Take Charge Brandi out of a mare by Seeking the Gold, duplicating that strain is worth considering. Sources of Seeking the Gold that particularly appeal are Mutakddim and Cape Town (both reverse crosses to Surfside). There are seven stakes winners, two grade one, by Giant’s Causeway out mares by Kingmambo, and there are also four stakes winners, one grade one out of mares by Kingmambo son, Lemon Drop Kid, a reverse cross to Surfside.
