  • BBC Radio 2 Beatles BBC Radio 2 Beatles
RADIO MUSIC BBC Radio 2 Beatles BBC Radio 2 Beatles Last September BBC Radio 2 produced a spin off four-day Beatles Pop-Up DAB service marking the 50th anniversary of the release of the iconic Abbey Road album, broadcast from Abbey Road Studios, and celebrating the Fab Four as a group, as individual artists, and as songwriters, with a mix of live shows, simulcasts (with the parent network), and classic content from the extensive R2 & Apple Records archive. This was a partnership between R2 and Apple/Universal Music, and because of the place the band hold in the hearts of the public, it was an opportunity to invite talent from right across BBC Radio (Scott Mills, Lauren Laverne, Zoe Ball, Nicky Campbell and Greg James), and the music and entertainment industries (Dave Grohl, Gary Barlow, Grace Dent, Jack Savoretti, Paul Merton, John Bishop, Katie Melua and Guy Garvey), to share their love of the band, and their music catalogue. By utilising these names, alongside radio brands like Desert Island Discs, Mastertapes & Sunday Love Songs, we could not only target the band’s evergreen fans, but also a new younger 25-44 demographic. We also weaved complimentary simulcasts into the schedule, kicking off with the UK’s most popular radio programme, the Ken Bruce Show, live from Abbey Road, and then a special live concert from Studio 1, featuring presenter Guy Garvey (who also performed), the BBC Concert Orchestra, Rick Astley, Mark King from Level 42, Ruby Turner and Cerys Matthews, all interpreting classic Beatles songs in front of a small audience of competition winners.

In total there were 120 million requests across all platforms (both online platforms and devices and BBC iPlayer on Virgin Media TV combined). • The week of 410 January set a new record for total requests (23.8m) and radio requests (8m), boosted by catchup viewing following the Christmas holiday, such as Doctor Who and Gavin and Stacey , and audio cricket coverage. On 11th January the new Chris Evans Breakfast show also attracted high request numbers. • Requests from PC/Macs continued to dominate in January for both TV and radio content, however requests for TV programmes via BBC iPlayer on Nintendo Wii increased +1 point to 4% of the total number, and PlayStation®3 requests again delivered a further 8%. Consistent with previous months: • The profile of BBC iPlayer users is fairly stable at around 60% male / 40% female, and remains strongly under55 in terms of age, which is younger than the typical TV viewer or radio listener’s profile. • Ondemand makes up the great majority of TV programme requests (in January only 8% of requests were for live simulcast streams), however twothirds of requests for radio streams are for live programmes, as opposed to ondemand catchup listening.

  • The Accent of BBC Radio Presenters
ACTA UNIVERSITATIS LODZIENSIS FOLIA LINGUISTICA 52, 2018 http://dx.doi.org/10.18778/0208-6077.52.08 Magda Kowalska Uniwersytet Łódzki The accent of BBC radio presenters Introduction Accent, defined by Wells (1982a: 1) as “a pattern of pronunciation used by a speaker for whom English is the native language (…)”, has been an important notion in the English sociolinguistic studies. The English assess and are assessed by other native speakers on the basis of the way they speak (Meyerhoff 2006). There is a multitude of accents in Great Britain as inhabi- tants of each region speak in their own distinctive manner. It appears that the accent of each region carries some social values and native speakers have a tendency to attribute certain characteristics to users of a given accent (Wells 1982a). For instance, speakers of accents of southern England are regarded as more intelligent, with a higher social status than it is the case in north urban England (Stockwell 2007). The present paper describes a study conducted on the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), one of the largest networks of radio stations, TV channels as well as commercial activities worldwide. It analyses the pronunciation of BBC radio presenters with respect to a standard English accent known as Received Pronunciation (RP). The study aims to examine the connection between the BBC and the RP which once was strong, but has changed in the recent years (Fabricius 2000), and to determine the role of RP on the BBC. RP: then and now RP is defined by phoneticians as a social, prestigious, non-localizable, non- -rhotic accent (Crystal 2008; Hughes & Trudgill 1996), spoken mainly in England by around 3% of the English population and functioning as a model for foreign learners of English.
