Egg and pupa of Lobeza dentilinea Schaus, 1901 are described and illustrated for the first time. Eggs are smooth, dome-shaped, and greenish at oviposition. Last instar larvae have an aposematic coloration and the chaetotaxy is very similar to other notodontines, except for the number of lateral setae: L. dentilinea has three instead of four lateral setae on abdominal segments A3-A6. Pupae are light brown and typical of the family, with the last abdominal segments broadly round. Evidence from the adult morphology supporting the placement of the genus in Notodontinae includes proboscis smaller than the length of the head, epiphysis with more than half the length of tibia, tarsal claws simple, and labial palpi short. Male and female are confidently associated, and a redescription of the species is presented based on both sexes. Larvae of L. dentilinea are here recorded feeding on a Melastomataceae. KEY WORDS. HACKER Superfamily NOCTUOIDEA LATREILLE, 1809 Remarks to Classification In the European List of Noctuidae (FIBIGER and HACKER, 1991) we refrained from writing a justification for subdividing the family into subfamilies and tribes. Our understanding of the classification of the family has progressed since then, but only to some extent therefore several paraphyletic or even polyphyletic groupings still remain in the Noctuidae (s.l.) and in the other families dealt with here. Most of the tribes listed here are monophyletic and we believe that most of them will stand the test of time. In groups where research is lasting, we refer to the latest knowledge available. For example the family Noctuidae has now been divided into three families, the Noctuidae, Micronoctuidae and Erebidae, these corresponding roughly to the groups previously called “quadrifid“ and “trifid“ noctuids. Ongoing research, however, suggests that the arctiid clade might be derived from within the Erebidae (WELLER and MITCHELL, pers. com.). Other important results have been published in the last 13 years, some of which are: KITCHING and RAWLINS (in KRISTENSEN, 1998); KITCHING and YELA (1999); SPEIDEL, FÄNGER and NAUMANN (1996); SPEIDEL and NAUMANN (1996); POOLE (1995, and his catalogue from 1989); the North American Moths of North America (MONA) book series: LAFONTAINE and POOLE (1991), POOLE (1995), LAFONTAINE (1998, 2004); BECK (1996, 1999, 2000); the volumes of the book series Noctuidae Europaeae (1990-2003); and many papers in Esperiana.

    Cerura vinula Notodontidae Prominents, Bag Shelter Moths, Processionary Caterpillars Biosecurity BIOSECURITY ALERT This Family is of Biosecurity Concern Occurrence This family occurs in Australia. Background The Notodontidae, belonging to the superfamily Noctuoidea, is a relatively small family of Lepidoptera of approximately 3,800 known species worldwide, but occurs mostly in tropical areas. There are 81 described species in Australia but the family is absent from New Zealand. Moths in this family tend to be moderately sized to large with robust, heavy bodies. Adults do not feed. The caterpillars are known for their often bizarre appearances (Fig. 1). They tend to be arboreal insects and sometimes cause defoliation of their hosts. Fig. 1. Mature caterpillar of the Palaearctic species Cerura vinula (puss moth) (Notodontidae: Notodontinae). Note the modified anal prolegs that are reduced and elevated at rest; also the slit directly posterior to the head on the mid-venter of T1, which is the opening for the eversible cervical gland. Donald LAFONTAINE Abstract The higher classification of the Noctuoidea (Oenosandridae, Doidae, Notodontidae, Strepsimanidae, Nolidae, Lymantriidae, Arctiidae, Erebidae, Micronoctuidae, and Noctuidae) is reviewed from the perspective of the classification proposed by KITCHING and RAWLINS (1998). Several taxa are reinstated, described as new, synonymised, or redescribed. Some characters that have been inadequately described, poorly understood, or misinterpreted, are redescribed and discussed. One family, two subfamilies, four tribes, and three subtribes are proposed as new. Available family-group names of Noctuoidea are listed in an appendix. Sac h k o v & V a d im V Z o lo t u h in received 24.II.2000 Summary: 309 species belonging to 21 families of Bombyces et Sphinges are listed for the modern Volgo-Ural fauna. 12 species ( Sesia philantiformis, Jordanita tenuicornis, Adscita manni, Zygaena trifolii, Z. occitanica, Phragmataecia territa, Amata phegea, Euchampsonia cristata, Phalera bucephaloides, Minna christophi, Hemaris croatica, Hyles nicaea and, prob­ ably, Holoarctia puengeleri) are deleted from the list. They were either erroneously deter­ minated or have disappeared ( Hemaris croatica) since Eversmann 's work. 129 species are recorded for the region in addition to Eversmann 's list. This paper is the third in a series of publications1 dealing with the composition of the present- day fauna of the Heterocera moths of various families, the so-called Bombyces et Sphinges, in the Middle Volga and the south-western Cisurals. This region comprises the administrative divisions of the Astrakhan, Volgograd, Saratov, Samara, Uljanovsk, Orenburg, Uralsk and Atyraus (= Gurjev) Districts, together with Tataria and Bashkiria.
