Occupant. Use: Mark Twain Memorial, the former residence of Samuel Langhorne Clemens (better known as Mark Twain), now a house museum. The carriage house is a mixed-use structure and contains museum offices, conference space, a staff kitchen, a staff library, and storage space. Significance: Completed in 1874, the Mark Twain Carriage House is a multi-purpose barn with a coachman's apartment designed by architects Edward Tuckerman Potter and Alfred H, Thorp as a companion structure to the residence for noted American author and humorist Samuel Clemens and his family. Its massive size and its generous accommodations for the coachman mark this structure as an unusual carriage house among those intended for a single family's use. The building has the wide overhanging eaves and half-timbering typical of the Chalet style popular in the late 19th century for cottages, carriage houses, and gatehouses. Landmark Site: Borough of Manhattan Tax Map Block 49, Lot 1. On October 19, 1965, the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hearing on the proposed designation as a Lendmark of Trinity Church and Graveyard and the proposed designation of the related Landmark Site. (Item No. 20). The hearing had been duly advertised in accordance with the provisions of law. Four witnesses spoke in favor of designation. Two representatives of Trinity Church also spoke at the hearing. DESCRIPTION AND Al.I!ALYSIS The present Trinity Church, completed in 1846, is the third edifice of this Episcopal parish, founded in 1697, to stand on this prominent site, d0sing the vista at the end of Wall Street. The present Ch~r· ch is one of t.hOJ m')~mments of the Gothic Revival and was executed in brownstone b;y the noted ecclesi::ts~,ical architect Richard Upjohn in a free rendering of English Gothic . Its spire, once the highest structure on the New York skylir:>e, is the most not<1ble fedure of t;1e Church. The tower itself is given a marvele~u0 appearance of solidity, being do,Ible-buttressed at each corner by r<to:n.e bdtresses which diminish in depth as the towe r rise~ . Cathedral Building in America: A Missionary Cathedral in Utah By the Very Reverend Gary Kriss, D.D. I “THERE IS NO fixed type yet of the American cathedral.”1 Bishop Daniel S. Tuttle’s comment in 1906 remains true today as an assessment of the progress of the cathedral movement in the Episcopal Church. In organization, mission, and architecture, American cathedrals represent a kaleidoscope of styles quite unlike the settled cathedral system which is found in England. It may fairly be said that, in the development of the Episcopal Church, cathedrals were an afterthought. The first cathedrals appear on the scene in the early 1860s, more than two hundred fifty years after Anglicans established their first parish on American soil. So far removed from the experience of English cathedral life, it is remarkable that cathedrals emerged at all—unless it might be suggested that by the very nature of episcopacy, cathedrals are integral to it. “I think no Episcopate complete that has not a center, the cathedral, as well as a circumference, the Diocese.”2 The year was 1869. William Croswell Doane, first Bishop of Albany, New York, was setting forth his vision for his Diocese. Just two years earlier, Bishop Tuttle had set out from his parish in Morris, New York, (which, coincidentally, was in that section of New York State which became part of the new Diocese of Albany in 1868) to begin his work as Missionary Bishop of Montana with Idaho and Utah. In 1869, Bishop Tuttle established his permanent home in Salt Lake City, and within two years, quite without any conscious purpose or design on his part, he had a cathedral. -

Powelton: An Unrecorded Building by William Strickland OWELTON, the great Greek Revival country house formerly situated on the west bank of the Schuylkill in Philadelphia's PBlockley Township, was one of the most important buildings of its period and deserves to be better known in the literature of Ameri- can architectural history. The seat of John Hare Powel (1786-1856),1 gentleman farmer, art collector, and amateur architect, the house was one of the earliest private manifestations of the monumental Greek Revival style in America. The core of the house was built by Powel's aunt, Elizabeth Willing Powel, in 1800-1802. The portico and wings, added by John Hare Powel, the inheritor of her fortune, were designed by William Strickland in 1825; the portico was com- pleted in 1826, but the wings took almost forty years to finish. De- stroyed in 1885 to make way for West Philadelphia tenements, Powelton was Strickland's first important private commission and, as far as is known, the first private country house near Philadelphia to use a giant stone portico based on a Greek temple front. Powelton has not entirely escaped the notice of architectural his- torians, but comment has been brief.2 "Considering the architectural importance of this fine house," George B. TRINITY COLLEGE . A PETITION for the charter of Washington College was pre sented to the Legislature of Connecticut, May 13, 1823. The charter having been obtained, and the requisite funds for organizing the Institution having been procured, a site was purchased in the city of Hartford, and the buildings were begun in June, 1824. In September of that year the first students were gathered, and in August, 1827, the first class graduated. In 1845, upon a memorial from the Trustees, the Legislature changed the name of the College to that which it now bears. -

Memoir of Bishop White by James Taylor HE HISTORICAL SOCIETY OF PENNSYLVANIA was recently given a small leather-bound volume bearing the inscription T"To be given to Richard Thomas as verbally promised by me James Taylor." Examination of the book revealed it to be of more than usual interest, containing as it does "Notices & Anecdotes" re- specting a variety of subjects as recorded by an astute and curious observer who had had the advantage of personal acquaintance with most of the subjects of his notices. These include brief memoirs of both Scots and American personalities, many of whom were ecclesi- astics, but of a variety of denominations. Among members of the clergy mentioned are the Rev. Benjamin Allen, the Rev. Dr. Stephen B. Balch, the Rev. Dr. Hugh Blair, and the Rev. Colin Campbell. Anecdotes concerning secular persons relate to Samuel Chase, Benjamin Chew, Thomas McKean, and the redoubtable Dr. Samuel Johnson. While often of penetrating insight, frequently of a humor- ous turn, and occasionally mordant, it is obvious that not all the ob- servations could have been original with Taylor, and it is perhaps not impertinent to suppose that some of the notices were collected as sermon material, as well as for their overt entertainment value. From some abstracts at the First Unitarian Church, Philadelphia, made from a now unlocated autobiographical sketch by James Taylor, and from Dr. Elizabeth M. Geffen's Philadelphia Unitarian- ism (Philadelphia, 1961), the salient facts of Taylor's life may be obtained. Born in 1767 in Perth, Scotland, Taylor was put to learning the weaving trade in 1782. -

When Cady died in New York in 1919, he his impressive architecture library to Trinity. It is now housed at the Library. Using his library and scattered archives, it has been possible to the life of this eminent and prolific architect. The research conducted in of the seminar served as the foundation for this catalog. My thanks are to the students for their intense semester's work and involvement. Our was aided by the assistance of Tony P. You are joining a dedicated team of adults and young persons who take seriously their service to God and the Church. The American Church and the Formation of the Anglican Communion, 1823-1853 By the Reverend Robert Semple Bosher, Ph.D. Evanston, Illinois: Seabury-Western Theological Seminary, 1962 I In John Dryden’s poem The Hind and the Panther, there is a passage that ridicules the Church of England for her friendless isolation in Christendom: “Thus, like a creature of a double kind, In her own labyrinth she lives confined; To foreign lands no sound of her is come, Humbly content to be despised at home.” But a century and a half later, we find John Henry Newman quoting those same lines, and asserting: “That day of rebuke is passed. That which is fruitful lives; the English Church, the desolate one, has children . This is our own special rejoicing in our American relations; we see our own faces reflected back to us in them, and we know that we live. We have proof that the Church, of which we are, is not the mere creation of the State, but has an independent life, with a kind of her own, and fruit after her own kind. Men do not gather grapes of thorns or figs of thistles; the stream does not rise higher than the spring; if her daughter can be, though the State does not protect, the mother too could bear to be deserted by it ... The American Church is our pride as well as our consolation.”1 The special role of the American Church in the evolution of modern Anglicanism has not been fully recognized, largely because the history of the Anglican Communion has not yet been written.
