And in that world, anything is allowed to enter, as long as it's always treated with a spirit of "Pop!" Not in the spirit of "Now you understand the problems of society in 1947." No, I don't give a shit about that. I think that cinema should be like magic, a surprise, that's all. I have to consider myself an auteur. I have had some critics who have said that I have made some bad films, but my reply is that the person who writes the script, directs the film, edits and even sometimes composes the music for the film is an auteur.

Signature:……………………………………… 3 Summary Due to their characteristic themes (such as „perverse‟ desire and monstrosity) and form (incoherence and excess), exploitation films are often celebrated as inherently subversive or transgressive. I critically assess such claims through a close reading of the films of the Spanish „sex and horror‟ specialist Jess Franco. My textual and contextual analysis shows that Franco‟s films are shaped by inter-relationships between authorship, international genre codes and the economic and ideological conditions of exploitation cinema. Within these conditions, Franco‟s treatment of „aberrant‟ and gothic desiring subjectivities appears contradictory. Contestation and critique can, for example, be found in Franco‟s portrayal of emasculated male characters, and his female vampires may offer opportunities for resistant appropriation.

Page 27 JESS FRANCO, or THE MISFORTUNES OF VIRTUE John Exshaw El sueño de la razon produce monstruos (The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters) Francisco Goya y Lucientes, Los Caprichos, plate 43, (17971798) In his book, Jess Franco: El sexo del horror, the Spanish film historian Carlos Aguilar closes a chapter with the following remark: “It is really true that, in his own way, Jesus Franco represents a damn peculiar case . .” (1) That Jess Franco can produce such a perplexed (and exasperated) response in a compatriot who was, after all, engaged in writing a booklength biographical and critical overview goes some way to illustrate the difficulties encountered in trying to come to grips with Jesús Franco Manera, a director whose staggering output of something like 180 films in fortyfive years contrives to make words like ‘maverick’, ‘obsessive’, ‘enigma’, or even ‘deranged’, seem sadly inadequate. Some might question whether it is worth “coming to grips” with Franco at all. His detractors are legion, and, despite the publication of three serious studies (2) and a veritable host of admiring magazine articles, it is fair to say that Franco and his films still fly well below the radar of respectable critical attention; considered, when considered at all, to be beneath both notice and contempt. In part, of course, this attitude is simply a hangover from what might be termed ‘La Plus longue nuit des auteurs’, the Cahiers du Cinémainspired revolution which, having done sterling work in elevating the importance of the Seventh Art, then proceeded, like an earlier French Revolution, to overstay its welcome, descending into a kind of intellectual Terror in which certain directors of genre films were elevated to the Pantheon (particularly if they laboured in the more obscure depths of the Hollywood system) while others (mainly European) were simply ignored.

Review by Tom Conley, Harvard University. Published in the “French Film Guide” series under the editorship of Ginette Vincendeau, Alphaville is a terse and incisive treatment of Jean-Luc Godard’s feature of the same title. Godard’s film appeared in 1965 after a number of brilliant features, some having gained immediate acclaim (A bout de souffle [1960], Vivre sa vie [1962] Le Mépris [1963]) and others less so (Le Petit Soldat [1960], Une femme est une femme [1961], Les Carabiniers [1963], Une femme mariée [1963]). Alphaville was Godard’s sign of continuity and deviation: continuity, in the photography of Raoul Coutard who once again endowed every shot with a profondeur de surface--a tension of the image conceived as a plane on which characters and forms can be read and seen at once, and a depth of field in which illusion, vital for narrative, is manifest; and deviation, as a piece of science fiction built from a critical relation to Fritz Lang’s cinema of the Weimar Years and film noir of the 1940s. Chris Darke complicates our appreciation of Godard’s film through a carefully charted analytical itinerary. In the first chapter, after reviewing the biographies of Coutard and four players (Akim Tamiroff, Howard Vernon, Anna Karina, Eddie Constantine), he engages a spatial appreciation of the city that the camera causes to be equally familiar and strange.

Brechtian Cinemas: Montage and Theatricality in Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet, Peter Watkins and Lars von Trier by Nenad Jovanovic A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Centre for Study of Drama University of Toronto © Copyright by Nenad Jovanovic 2011 Abstract Brechtian Cinemas: Montage and Theatricality in Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet, Peter Watkins and Lars von Trier Nenad Jovanovic, Degree of Doctor of Philosophy (2011) Graduate Centre for Study of Drama, University of Toronto In this dissertation I investigate the stylistic shift in the cinema of selected filmmakers whose work is rooted in Bertolt Brecht’s dramatic theory: Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet, Peter Watkins, and Lars von Trier. Through the work of these filmmakers, I trace the ongoing change in the cinematic applications of the theory. By and large, the change consists of a lessening of the role of montage – a technique that occupies a paramount place in Brecht’s theatrical and filmic practice – in favour of the objects within the camera’s field of view and the sounds within the microphone’s range. Since the ultimate effect for which the Brechtian filmmaker aims is that of Verfremdung , theatrical stylisation – itself estranging within the context of cinema – appears as a natural corollary of the described shift in emphasis. I also suggest a causal connection between the aforementioned shift and the growing self-consciousness of the style employed by meainstream cinemas (of which Hollywood is the foremost representative), which often manifests itself in the use of unorthodox editing patterns.

MoMA PAYS TRIBUTE TO JEAN-MARIE STRAUB AND DANIÈLE HUILLET WITH FIRST COMPLETE NORTH AMERICAN RETROSPECTIVE Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet May 6–June 6, 2016 The Roy and Niuta Titus Theaters NEW YORK, April 6, 2016—The Museum of Modern Art presents the first complete North American retrospective of Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet, which will feature more than 45 films in the Roy and Niuta Titus theaters from May 6 to June 6, 2016. Straub-Huillet, who together formed one of the most intense, challenging, and controversial collaborations in the history of cinema, created highly personal film interpretations of profoundly ambitious art: stories by Böll, Kafka, Duras, and Pavese; poems by Dante, Mallarmé, and Hölderlin; a long-forgotten Corneille play, an essay by Montaigne, a film by D. W. Griffith, a painting by Cézanne, an unfinished opera by Schöenberg; and the biography of Johann Sebastian Bach as told through the fictionalized letters of his wife Anna Magdalena. Introductions by noted Straub-Huillet collaborators, including their longtime cinematographer Renato Berta, will take place during the retrospective’s opening weekend. The exhibition is organized by Joshua Siegel, Curator, Department of Film, MoMA. Straub (French, b. 1933) and Huillet (French, 1936–2006) were inseparable partners from 1954 until Huillet's death in 2006, working intimately on every aspect of film production from script writing to direction to editing. There are only a handful of similar moviemaking partnerships, notably Jean-Luc Godard and Anne-Marie Miéville, Angela Ricci Lucchi and Yervant Gianikian, and Gene Gauntier and Sidney Olcott. Straub-Huillet sought to make what Straub called “an abstract- pictorial dream,” while also remaining sensitive to the letter and spirit of the text and to the relationship between sound and image.
