KNOWIT. JAN - MAR 2006 3 EXHIBITION Australia on the Map Story Steve Howell

Australia on the Map: 400 years of the Dutch in Australia In November 1605, a small yacht, the (Little Dove), sailed from Bantam in the Dutch East Indies under the command of to explore . Early in 1606 he sighted and sailed along the western side of Cape York (mistakenly believing it to be New Guinea), this being the first documented European contact with Australia. Luiz Vaz de Torres sailed through the Strait, which was eventually to be named after him, between New Guinea and Australia a few months later.

umerous navigators from a range of nationalities, Nespecially the British and French, followed Janszoon and Torres to the Australian coasts. To honour the part these men played in the charting of the Australian continent, Australia on the Map: 1606-2006 (AOTM), was formed in 2002. AOTM is a national organisation dedicated to helping and encouraging the people of Australia plan events for 2006 to honour the 400th anniversary of this first European contact. Their focus is mainly on the many mariners who, whether by accident or design, charted our coasts and put ‘Australia on the Map’, thereby making it known to the world.

4 KNOWIT. JAN - MAR 2006 KNOWIT. JAN - MAR 2006 5 AOTM is a community based network with links across the nation. The National Steering Committee (NSC) is based in Canberra, with a Steering Committee in every State to interact with an increasing number of local committees and with event organisers and the NSC.

After discussions with Dr Nonja Peters, the Western Australian Chair of the State Steering Committee of AOTM, it was decided that the State Library of Western Australia would hold an exhibition based on the exploration of Western Australia. As space and time were limited and the inclusion of all the other mariners who came to the Western Australian coast was not practicable, the exhibition was to focus on the Dutch contribution. The exhibition would span the period from 1616, when in the Eendracht left a pewter plate on the island named after him, up to 1727 when the Zeewijk was wrecked on the Houtman’s Abrolhos.

The exhibition ran from February to May 2006 in the Centre for the Book and involved staff from the State Reference Library and the Battye Library who selected the material and wrote the text and captions; Preservation Services staff, who assessed the material for display, and provided scans of old maps and mounts for displayed material; and Public Programs staff, who designed and mounted the exhibition.

Of most interest were the many old maps from the Library’s collection that were displayed. However, as displaying the maps for such a long period of time may have been injurious to them due to extended exposure to high light levels, scanned facsimiles were produced which were so much like the originals as to be undetectable. Many books and other items from the collection were also featured.

The scanned facsimile maps are so beautiful that they are works of art in their own right. To continue with the celebratory year they have been loaned to the Australia on the Map Organising Committee (WA) for displays in May at Gosnells and in August at Albany.

6 KNOWIT. JAN - MAR 2006 Another key event in the 2006 Australia on the Map celebrations also has links to Western Australia. On 24 January 1999 a replica of the Duyfken was launched at Fremantle and in 2000 it re-enacted the original voyage from the Dutch East Indies to Cape York Peninsula. In 2006 it will complete the full re-enactment voyage from to Cape York to celebrate the 400th anniversary of its original visit. Duyfken’s voyage will link commemorative events in various coastal centres, involving Australians in their communities as well as showcasing national and international events.

The broad aims of AOTM are to: • focus on the period from 1606 onwards;

• give due recognition to all relevant navigators of all nationalities in the mapping of the Australian coast;

• ensure commemorations take place on a nation-wide basis and in all states and territories;

• have strong community involvement, engaging, as far as possible all Australians, regardless of age, creed, gender, socio-economic group or ethnicity;

• highlight the mariners’ contacts with the land and between them and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians, as well as the historical and cultural implications of those contacts;

• provide for local, state, national and international events;

• stimulate tourism in Australia. K

The release of the movie The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe provided the theme for the January school holiday program.
