My Sub-Dean wife and I spent several days in July visiting former Tom Gerke AGO Columbus Chapter member Mike Hardesty in [email protected] Norfolk, Virginia. Mike was a gracious host, showing us museums, historical sites, and, of course, several Secretary notable pipe organs around the city. Mark Stuart We toured the sanctuary of St. Paul’s Episcopal [email protected] Church in downtown Norfolk. Built in 1739, it Treasurer Mark Meuser endured British bombing, fire, occupation by Hessian troops, and extensive remodeling during the Victorian Albert Adcock era. The building survived all of that, [email protected] even though a cannon ball is still visible Chaplain in one of its walls. Happily, in 1913 St The Rev. Cynthia Adcock Paul’s was refurbished and restored to its original colonial design. The current [email protected] organ is in the rear balcony and was installed by Mander Organs of London, England, in 2006. It seemed more than a little ironic that they chose an organ Executive Committee builder from the same country that shot the cannon ball into the wall! Class of 2017 We also had the opportunity to visit Christ and St. Luke’s Jim Hildreth Episcopal Church in Norfolk. A huge stone edifice built in Nancy Renneckar 1909, Christ and St. Luke’s is a thriving congregation with Mary Ann Stephens a renowned music program. Kevin Kwan is the Organist and Music Director. Kevin previously served churches in Class of 2018 England and New York City and has concertized all over Brian Johnson the world. We were fortunate enough to meet him on our Janice Sprecher visit. He gave us an impromptu improvisation showcasing Christopher Warner the Casavant organ in the sanctuary. Installed in 1963, the Casavant was rebuilt and enlarged in 1996 by Orgues Class of 2019 Latourneau. Kathie Bracy Fortunately, you don’t have to drive to Virginia to visit Jason Keefer some really fine pipe organs. Many of you already know Ron Kenreich this because you took advantage of an opportunity to visit three of our local instruments on the AGO Organ Crawl on September 10. It was a great way to start off the year. I appreciated Mary Ann Stephens’ efforts in organizing that event. We will have two additional opportunities in October to hear two outstanding organists on two magnificent instruments. On October 1, Bradley Welch will present a workshop and concert at 1:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. respectively at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Upper Arlington. On October 22, Charles Callahan will present a workshop at 10:00 a.m. at Broad Street United Methodist Church. He will play a concert the following day at 4:00 pm. Both of these organists are nationally known and are sure to present stunning and informative programs. You won’t want to miss them. Warmly, Mark H.
